Why is Nintendo undercutting potential Wii U sales with a classic Wii refresh. I don't get it.

Because the cheaper Nintendo can make the hardware the more profit they get from it.

There's still folks out there willing to buy the Wii, especially if it's dirt cheap.

It's like asking why Sony continued to make minor modifications to the PS2 Slim even after the PS3 was on the market.

It's just leaked internal concept art, it's not that big a deal.

If there's only 1 thing bothersome about that concept art, it's how stupid and out of place that "new" helmet they slapped on the existing space marine looks. Unless they were doing concepts for a variety of new and exciting different helmets.

I just saw via Twitter that even though Microsoft is reporting there's 80 million sales for Windows 8 (not money brought in, like copies sold), there's only actually 15 million activated / in use.

Huh. Not that I doubt you, but do you have a source on that?

I do! Our dear friends at Eurogamer Tweeted the article!
Microsoft has announced sales of 40 million Windows 8 licenses in the operating system's launch month.

This likely indicates a faster take-up rate than for previous launch Windows 7, Reuters reported (via NDTV).

But 40 million licenses sold does not mean there are now 40 million Windows 8 users. Countless numbers of licences are bought up by hardware manufacturers for future use in new machines.

Tech research firm StatCounter suggests that Windows 8 has actually only reached 15 million PC users - which equates to one per cent of the world's 1.5 billion personal computer userbase.

Microsoft is yet to mention sales numbers for its Windows 8-powered Surface tablet, launched last month as a rival for Apple's iPad. Company boss Steve Ballmer admitted that early Surface sales were "modest".

Xbox 360 sales are booming, however. The company shifted 750,000 consoles in the US during the country's annual Black Friday sales week - more than the Wii and Wii U combined.

It's like asking why Sony continued to make minor modifications to the PS2 Slim even after the PS3 was on the market.

And while you could argue that Sony did that to keep making money as the $599 PS3 was floundering, the company did the exact same thing with the PSOne while the PS2 was out. They made a slimmer and cheaper console and were able to keep selling it for, what, three more years?

I'm guessing the reasoning on no Internet for the mini-Wii is that most people who would wait this long for a Wii are probably the sort of people who aren't going to care about Internet.

Meanwhile the article as a whole is so biased as to hurt my brain, but there is this tidbit:
I wanted to get to the bottom of it, so I reached out to Sony to see if they’d comment. When I inquired about rumors of lagging sales for All-Stars, a representative told me that “Sales are right on target with expectations and we are happy with them.”

    http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/27/playstation-all-stars-sales-are-right-on-target

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they say the same thing about Vita until recently?

I don't really care if a company says their game or console or whatever is meeting their sales expectations unless they told us what those expectations were before it launched. Otherwise it's just PR speak.

I have to say I am honestly surprised the Xbox is still selling like it is this late into the game.

In the case of the comments on Dishonored today though, it doesn't read at all like PR-speak, rather someone who's really surprised and impressed: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-11-28-higher-than-expected-dishonored-sales-mean-bethesda-has-a-new-franchise

    http://www.gamespot.com/news/take-two-console-transition-will-leave-casualties-6400693
The upcoming console cycle will come at the cost of one or two third-party publishers, according to Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick. Speaking at the Credit Suisse 2012 Technology Conference, Zelnick said those not positioned effectively when the time comes will die out.

"If you're not capitalized for the transition, you can find out that you're not there for the transition," Zelnick said. "And historically, in every transition that's occurred in this business, one or two third-parties have gone out of business. Last time around it was Midway and a couple of others. Reasonable people can argue about which one it'll be this time. I have my own point of view, which I haven't exactly been quiet about. We make sure we're not on the list of casualties; to the contrary, we're on the list of winners."

Zelnick did not specifically name any publishers that he anticipates will not survive the transition. However, his comments alluded to his prediction in April that Saints Row and Darksiders publisher THQ would be dead in six months. Six months have passed and THQ is still in business, though the company's is not having an easy time managing.

A representative from Take-Two said Zelnick's remarks were not aimed at any one company and declined to add further details. A THQ representative had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment at press time.

Zelnick believes Take-Two will not only survive the console transition, but also prosper during this time. To succeed in the market, Zelnick said publishers must have four "key elements." These, he said, are owned intellectual property, power, technology, and a "very strong" financial footing. The executive claimed Take-Two is either "competitive" or has the "best in the business" for each category.
 Some will live and some will fall

Nintendo is giving 3DS XL owners a free game for registering their system. Good games too like Super Mario 3D Land & Professor Layton. Unfortunately, the promotion is only in Europe - is the 3DS selling poorly in that region? Just wondering because a free $40 game is a pretty big incentive.

I'm really curious what will happen to the WWE license.

Wrestling is nowhere where it used to be when I imagine those deals were made. Wonder if anyone is interested in it..maybe EA?

That said I do wonder what the next "big thing" will be next gen.

You know the thing that one developer comes out and does well and we love it. Then everyone else copies it and runs it into the ground and we hate it.

It probably is a safe bet, but I keep feeling like they're going to pull through. I don't know how they will though... I just hope they release South Park and Saint's Row 4 before they tank.

Is that just the SKU name or is it actually called "Subtitled Edition?" Edit: Oh right, subtitles and dubbed.

It's not that unusual actually. It is in line with the certain bump that Blops seems to generate.

Actually it's that the Wii had the weakest Black Friday since it was launched.

Not surprsing since it's been out 6 years and the Wii U just launched.

I think the point is that between 2010 and 2011 sales total halved, while black friday sales lost about 1/6th. In other words, the Wii doesn't sell nearly as well anymore, and Nintendo wants to wring any more possible sales from the public as possible.

    No I don't.

My guess for "why Wii Mini" would be that it is cheaper to make, and they already have enough non-gimped Wiis already produced, so they might as well do something with all those extra bits of Wii guts that they've manufactured.

Kind of a silly thing to point out. "Console manufacturer releases hot new product for Black Friday; previous product flounders in sales?!"

Not that silly. I mean, why should we stop tracking a console's sales even though it's clear which direction it's going? Hell, you could make the case that this shows the Wii sold surprisingly well considering the Wii U came out -- this Black Friday was just 50K behind its second-worst.

Not silly to track overall, silly to point out. It's just extremely obvious that that's what would happen.

But I love graphs and charts so you'll never get complaints from me :P

Yeah, tracking is fine. Making it a point is the thing I'm worried about. Remember, people look at the dumbest things to say, "NINTENDO IS DOOMED!" And then the same things happen to other companies but it doesn't mean anything.

Well the interesting thing is that traditionally the dominant console has indeed sold into the next generation while others have not. This was especially true of the PS2.

This time it seems like the Wii is limping in to the finish line so there is a bit of a different dynamic. Also Nintendo decided to launch first which is a bit different.

I don't think that any of the console makers can take anything for granted going into next gen. I'm very, very interested to see how much MS and Sony think they can get away with price wise.

Well. I mean the thing about PS2 was that it was still getting support well into its final year. Hell, people were still make games for it a year after the PS3 came out(though these were mostly smaller companies).

I think most companies(Nintendo included) dropped most of their support for the Wii once the WiiU was announced except for a title here and there.

Yeah I feel like if either system is higher than $399 (possibly even $299) then it's practically all but over for that contender.

Honestly at this point I'm more interested in what Valve has to show us than any of the big three.

Right, the N64 and Cube pretty much pooped out entirely shortly after their successors came out. The Wii will probably last longer.

Let's place bets on when 3DS catches up to PS3 LTD.

I guessed about 5 weeks. Looks like we're pretty close to that. 3DS has sustained sales better than I thought it might.

It's been two weeks and Media Create has them at 8.42 and 8.65 million. If they continue with today's numbers, 3DS will be at 8.74 and PS3 will be at 8.72 in another two weeks. That's cutting it kind of close, though.

PS3 has a bump due to a new model, I believe, and some good games in the top 10. Not sure if that will be sustained for a few more weeks or if they'll drop back down to sub 20s like last week.
