Help my baby stay alive! (I need Recipes for nauseous dehydrated pregnant fiance)!
So, my pregnant fiance has been feeling awful lately. She's been feeling rather nauseous, and hasn't been eating well at all. I've been pushing her to drink, but most things liquid don't sit well at all.
Today we had our first OBGYN visit, and as it turns out she is dangerously dehydrated. The OBGYN had us go to and get some IV fluids in her until her output came back good, but what we've been doing is obviously not working. So I'm asking for any tips or tricks to help with this. Mainly the hydration. We've tried ice chips, juice, water, water heavy fruits and veggies. Nothing so far has worked. It doesn't help that more than likely a good deal of her nausea lately had been from the dehydration, but we need to get a good handle on this. If not, there's a pretty good chance she might lose the baby.
So I'm asking for anything. Recipes, personal stories that deal with this. We just need help.
Oh, and the baby is healthy right now, 8 weeks 5 days. Has little feet. It's humbling.
ginger and mint things tend to help with regular nausea, so perhaps a tea with those would help. Smoothies might be a good option - still watery, but not like, super liquid and sloshy in the stomach.

Did you not read the post? We have talked to the doctor. Pregnancy is a messy thing, and a lot of medical options just aren't available to pregnant women. What we need is good advice on tons of hydrating foods/drinks to try and find what will work for her.
I'll put it this way, we know what the problem is (dehydration and nausea caused by dehydration). We also know what the solution is (hydrating foods). What I'm asking for is hydrating recipes and any other things that people who have dealt with this might have. Things we can try over the course of the pregnancy.
Our OBGYNs advice is chicken soup. Tomorrow I will make chicken soup. But she can't eat/drink only chicken soup for 9 months. She'd go insane.
Make sure the chicken soup is either homemade or some version of low sodium. The majority of canned chicken soups have absolutely horrendous amounts of salt and could make her even more dehydrated. (Or, they could also make her more thirsty so it may help? I dunno.)
The reason ice chips are recommended is its a small but steady amount of liquid, its not overloading the stomach or making nausea worse (usually). Whatever you try, go with small sips, spoonfuls, and waiting a minute or so in between each. Slurping stuff can aggravate nausea.
Seconding mint or ginger tea and smoothies.
Best of luck and hope this phase passes soon!

I have been going through this myself, actually. Fortunately for all the trouble eating I've been having, I have a little extra weight on me to pick up the slack.
I will tell you EXACTLY what I was told, and it's basically saved me... Gatorade.
Yes, Gatorade. Gatorade, Gatorade, Gatorade. I go through at least 32oz a day, and nothing else I can drink sits as well, not even water. It's like this miracle fluid that you can barely feel in your tummy, it's so easy... you drink it and it goes away and then you almost instantly stop feeling like shit because there's liquid in you. It doesn't taste awesome, but there are some decent flavors out there these days. I think my favorite is "Rain Berry." We clean stores out of it when we see it.
I started having this trouble around 8 weeks myself, actually, and I'm about 13 now, except at this point most of my nausea has gone and I'm just dealing with a severe lack of appetite. Back when I was nauseous, crystallized ginger is what really helped take my mind off it.
Good luck, man. I'm there with you.. just.. from her side. >>

I'm going to get a low sodium chicken stock, then add veggies and chicken. After it's good and cooked, I'm going to blend the chicken and veggies to make sure the broth is mostly brothy (she doesn't like the texture of chicken), add noodles to half, and keep half as just broth. See which she likes better, and there we have that.
No I don't.

By the way, I can't stand the substitutes. Generics.. Powerade.. all terrible. It pretty much has to be Gatorade. I'm also crazy fussy though.

Chicken soup sounds really good right about now, make me some.
Seriously though, try Gatorade if you haven't. I think I am going to love Gatorade forever now. None of the funny stuff they've got out these days, just the regular stuff. Don't worry about the sugar, it's not like she's getting too many calories right now.
And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn
Be careful which flavors you buy, and don't just rely on the color of it to make sure you have the right flavors. I got stuck with two bottles of Cucumber-Lime that I thought were Lemon-Lime.
Cucumber-Lime Gatorade is one of the foulest things I have ever tasted, but that's just my opinion. Get a few flavors at a time, and find a selection of flavors that she likes. There's something to be said for variety.
I have chrons and in the past have had several episodes where I was extremely dehydrated and nauseous and ceres is right Gatorade is excellent for that situation. There are also powders made for people with sever diarrhea that do a similar thing although I have not personally tried them. Is she tolerating solid foods? If not a meal replacement like ensure might be useful for her.

I did, and you never mentioned anything about doctor recommendations. Did he mention anything besides chicken soup? Maybe you should find yourself a nutritionist who specializes in pregnancies?
As Ceres said, pregnant women are picky and what works for one isn't going to work for another. The fact that she can't even keep down water is a little extreme and makes me think that she needs to go back to the doctor. Try Gatorade and then maybe Pedialyte if the Gatorade isn't taking.

I also failed to keep down water. I was still told Gatorade, because you are more likely to keep that than anything else, and if you don't keep all of it what you do keep will help replace things you've lost to puking.
He is communicating with a doctor and this is something you have no experience with, so you might possibly be better off not continuing along this line.

Southwestern Michigan. And yes, it IS the worst thing. Think of super-strong cucumber water, with a small zing of sourness at just the wrong time. I managed to drink half a bottle before I just poured it down the sink to get rid of it.
I found them at the local Wal-Mart, so it might just be a bulk thing.
And yes, Rain Berry is awesome. I have five bottles in my apartment fridge right now, as a matter of fact.
I can has cheezburger, yes?

I will also tell you what I've been told numerous times from numerous sources and was very comforting to me:
Don't fret *too* much about the solid foods right now. The important thing is to stay hydrated. It's pretty common for pregnant women to be horrendously ill their first trimester and actually lose a bunch of weight. DO take any vitamins you've been prescribed (well not YOU, obviously), and drink as much liquid as is humanly possible because blood volume is increasing right now and what isn't blood volume is amniotic fluid, but for the next couple weeks she can get away with a good bit less food and still have a perfectly healthy baby. I mean, she should do her best, but it's not the end of the world if it's not as much as she would normally keep down.
And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

With Gatorade I can see it being fowl because it would be artificially flavored, but cucumber and lime actually go well together. Death, blending homemade chicken soup sounds like a great idea. Hope it works for her!
Especially if you get some soft veggies in the chicken soup, too- carrots and celery all get soft when you cook them, and they'll add more good stuff to the broth that her body could use, blended together or not.

Don't be offended if she smells it and you end up having to freeze it all, or if you put something in you think she'll like and she ends up picking it all out. It won't pay to be too sensitive about that stuff right now.. even things I normally love make me want to hurl sometimes.
And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn
Also, something that's pretty easy to make and that she may find easy to get down for liquids is miso soup. But that all depends on what flavors she's sensitive to/nauseated by right now. She may find it way too salty, but worth considering.

Maybe ramen noodles, as well? If you let them steep in the microwave, they get really, really soft after a while. The seasoning packet has a lot of salt in it, so it has that going for it as well.
Sour candies will help a ton with nausea, they specifically make a candy call Preggy Pops or something like that for morning sickness. Your body cannot process nausea and sour at the same time and sour wins. Also, Gatorade and the BRAT diet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRAT_diet) until she can stomach more.

Ramen has definitely become a "sometimes I want it and sometimes if I smell it I'll puke" food... but that's only with the noodles. The ramen broth on its own is pretty excellent, but no professional is going to recommend that to you anyway because it is so very, very salty, and for some people blood pressure is a thing. So she does have to watch how much of that she consumes even though it's like drinking ambrosia sometimes I swear.
I can definitely get behind preggie pops though. I actually had the most trouble with getting carsick for a while, and those really helped.
I had heard the sour thing so I started with lemons, but the thing about them is that you can't use them all the time because they'll wreck your teeth.
And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn
Going to try some different types of Gatorade tomorrow. If she can't stand them, I can always use some more hydrating liquids. Lots of good things to try now. Thank all of you so much!
Maybe if you diluted the ramen broth with some extra water to help reduce the amount of salt you take in, then?
I was also going to suggest something like the V-Fusion drinks that have lots of fruit and vegetable juices in them, but taste only like the fruit. That might be something to see if she can keep down- any additional nutrition can only help at this point.
EDIT: You might already know this, but it might be a good idea to keep her away from caffiene. A pregnant woman's blood pressure is already up there, and there's no real sense tempting fate for a Mountain Dew or a Monster.
I also remember that they put my sister on a blood-sugar reader- apparently they were concerned with prenatal diabetes and fat babies, but everything worked out well for her in the end. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they put Death of Rats's wife or Ceres on watch for that eventually, too. She had to test her sugar a few times a day, so there might be something to finding things that you can keep down that try not to spike your sugar.
Ok, I have never been pregnant and never want to be pregnant but when I'm sick to my stomach I drink coconut water and it calms me right down. It's high in potassium as well, that's good for pregnant ladies right? I like the O.N.E. brand just make sure you get the regular stuff, not the ones with fruit juice.

Yeah apparently every time I go in she's going to test my glucose level. It took me too long to figure out why. She says it's something she does every time.
Good luck keeping her away from anything, though, and heaven help you if you try. Chances are she'll do enough reading to know that caffeine can be bad, or salt, or whatever. You still have to let her make the decisions about what she ingests because unless you're doing something very illegal, she's still an adult.

Try Gatorade and then maybe Pedialyte if the Gatorade isn't taking.
Give Pedialyte a try. Make sure you look at the label, though - it's really unclear as to what flavor they are. Look for the plain one - has the word 'unflavored' in blue against a blue/white background.
Why is she getting dehydrated? Can she not keep anything down? Extended fever? Won't drink anything?
If it's nausea she needs an anti-emetic. We used Emetrol when wife was pregnant, but you may want to call your doc/nurse and talk about it.
Once ske keeps the anti-emetic down she should keep a bottle of liquid (gatorade, water, cucumber water, whatever she will drink) with her at all times, and she should be taking little sips constantly throughout the day, no chugging (as she might not keep that down). Once she's used to not puking you can add stuff like broth or jello.
Don't know if this will help but my wife had nausea and someone told her ginger would help. She got a case of ginger altoids and some ginger candy a friend gave her and it seemed to ease her symptoms.
Hear my warnings, unbelievers. We have raised altars in this land so that we may sacrifice you to our gods. There is no hope in opposing the inevitable. Put down your arms, unbelievers, and bow before the forces of Chaos!
Ceres' suggestion is great, and I know even for myself when I've had stomach viruses the Rain Berry flavor in particular was great. The Rain flavors of Gatorade are a bit less syrupy than the normal ones, so they don't feel as heavy on the stomach (to me at least). I'd also water them down with a bunch of ice cubes, and it was a huge help.
A few things I forgot to mention last night that may make it clearer why going back to the doctor right now doesn't make much sense.
1. We were there yesterday.
2. The doctor knows what's going on, had suggestions as far as what sort of diet would help.
3. Made sure she has a prescription for anti nausea medication.
4. Has a standing order for us to be able to go get more iv fluids if she gets dehydrated again.
The main issue is a lot of liquids just aren't sitting well. And the doctor put the fear of god into her about making sure to stay away from sugar (her dad is a type 1 diabetic). But man, some of these suggestions are great and will really help.
I'm under the impression that dye-free carbonated beverages can help settle one's stomach (at least, that was a staple of how mom always handled nausea during my childhood). Since sugar is a no-no, that writes off ginger ale and sprite, but you might cruise the soda aisle for plain or lightly flavored sparkling water (like LaCroix).
if going with gatorade, i would probably cut it in half with water. it will be more tolerable taste wise
ginger sometimes works, but not for everyone. my wife ate ton of saltines

I second (third?) the recommendation of pedialyte. Make sure to get the unflavored one (as mentioned above). It's primary use is keeping babies with diarrhea hydrated so it should fit the bill nicely.
A small update. The soup worked pretty good. With oyster crackers she was able to eat two bowls, and with pureeing the vast majority of the vegetables/meats, she'll be getting good stuff in every bite.
Also, went and bought about 10 different types of Gatorade/Sobe Lifewater/Poweraide. Had her try all of them, and the Rain Berry was an excellent call. Found that, and the orange flavor Gatorade that she likes. Guess I'll have a large amount of sports drinks to drink for the next couple of days. For now it looks like we have this under control, but I'll update this if anything happens.
