i went and bought the 4X... maybe should have picked some other model. ballistics are baaaaaad.... and it doesnt help i suck with arm weapons. ive spent way too much time in the catapult.
that standard 170 engine i bought for my hunch barely moves this guy. 39kph! hahahaha. ill end up breaking down for an XL245 probably for this guy. ive got other builds i can use that in too.
Having used a centurion for so long it's really hard for me to remember that not every other mech can brawl with 2-3 other mechs and still expect to come out on top.
man... 48kph feels like a thousand miles an hour compared to 39kph. On the plus side, i need to grind up 2 million more cbills to bring back my UAC CAT with either an XL245 or XL255 which i can also use in the 4X if need be. Sooooo... i guess ill keep him for now. And selling him only gets me 2.7 mil back and ive dropped 7.5 mil on him already screwing around.
So is the netcode so awful that it's not even worth logging in or is it at least vaguely tolerable?
You'll probably be fine, but if you already had lag (say, by playing from australia, a third-world internet country) you'll probably not have much fun.

@Tox you are awesome. I grabbed Dual Heat Sinks, then rejigged to get Endosteel. And taking out a few DHS I upgraded to a Standard 250 while still having full armor, 4 Medium Lasers, 1 Small Laser, and 2 SRM6s. I gained 17 kph from the engine and am now a Speed Gonzales of Death.
I bought the Cat 4x and armed it with two Gauss (yes I am that evil). I find the 4x chassis with the default engine to be a great stand off and shoot mech but really poor at brawling. Its atlas slow and seems to turn about as poorly as well. It also seems to die rather easy.
Hrm, vaguely tolerable netcode vs finally getting to play in my first Hawken Beta since I last played in Alpha.
Does Hawken have a mech lab kind thing?
Not to the extent that Mechwarrior does. Your weapon selection is very limited but you can purchase all sorts of toys to upgrade certain aspects of your mech to make yourself faster, boost longer, have faster heat dissipation, etc. There's also a decent amount of pure visual customization.

Welp, that's that for me. A hat trick of matches getting pasted due to netcode making ballistic weapons shit and streaks being massively OP. Unless that big patch coming up actually improves the game instead of breaking the shit out of even more stuff, I'm more or less done with MWO. I've given PGI plenty of patience with their whole "fixes are coming soon!" bullshit and so far, I've yet to see any real, actual fixes.
A damn shame PGI is just doing it's level best to piss all this potential away but at this point, if they manage to make the game fail then it was entirely up to PGI's complete inability to understand what balance and bugfixes actually mean.
And I highly recommend jumping on that. Hawken is super god damn fun. It's VERY fast though so it'll be a bit of a shock to the system if you're only used to MWO paced mech games.

It'll be a shock to the system to play something that might actually work.

I prefer MWO. That said, Hawken is not bad at all. Some people call Hawken Call of Duty with mechs but it's not even close to being that twitchy. It's still quick, but it's not a spamfest.
I'm certainly keeping an eye on it in the event MWO keeps on keeping on like it does.

Tbh, Hawken's Alphas were in better shape that MWO's current beta.
At no point did that sentence drift into exaggeration either.

It's not really surprising I mean I think most devs would focus on making the game work at a fundamental level before adding new content and trying to balance things.
Sorry for the tangent, but its still shooty mech related:
With the Hawken Beta from RPS.
-go to the hawken webpage. (directed there via the RPS beta key page that @Taranis and @TOGSolid linked)
-Make an account.
-in the top right of the screen it is *very* tiny but there is the redeem button.
-click it and put in RPS's super code.
-If there is still a key, you'll get a notification that you are good to go and that you can continue with this instruction.
-On the main page again, look in the top left of the screen. Bigger button this time, but you still gotta be aware it's there.
-Click "Join Beta"
and that's where the damn client download is. It's autopilot from there on out.

What the hell.

2 AC10's, LLas, SRM 4, with the standard 210.
I call him "Creeping Death".
just deleted my cache folder, lets see if this helps any. Forest colony was neigh unplayable
elaborate... cant see how i can get this to work.
edit: nevermind, suddenly i have 6 free tons i didnt notice
edit edit: wtf... didnt put the LL in, so that leaves 1 ton for ammo, though i do have an ams
That build is for a 4x. ES, DHS.
It is a dead ringer for this old Honda riding mower my dad has...
Its at tolerable, its not so bad you can't shoot anything ever, but for the most part its really about the same.

ah... just ran it with 2 AC10 and 2 ML. worked pretty well. those AC10s give it oomph. 1 kill 4 assists.
vaguely tollerable
The lag isn't just bad, it's incomprehensibly bad for 8 vs 8.
Which isn't to say that it's intolerable, it's just really bad compared to other multiplayer games.

Yeah, I think I know what I'll be doing tonight.
The netcode doesn't matter much against anything going at a normal speed, but lights? Forget it, hitting them is worse than ever.
I actually like the new medium laser sound better. The old one sounded like it was ripped straight out of a sound library with no work done to it.
I'd still prefer lasers to make a buzzing noise when firing, but I'll take what I can get.

No, unfortunately there are 3 arm actuators. If it only had 2 this wouldn't be a problem
