    let's talk about

    fishing spiders

    Dolomedes_fimbriatus.jpg

I bet you're wondering if they actually fish or if that's just some sort of colorful name

    don't doubt spiders

some of them are large enough to get small fish or other aquatic things

they don't use silk as a reel or anything fancy like that

in this case fishing means they run on top of the water and just grab at things

they can also completely submerge if they feel the need

they can get pretty big! I've seen one and it's impressive

especially since they live in places where you might not expect to see a large spider

deserts or rainforests? sure, tarantulas are all over the place

    but this summer?

it's not safe to go in the river

    oh wow

    those are some beautiful shots

looks like some kind of harvestman, but I'm not familiar enough with them to identify it any further

e:went to do some ID work

    maybe Phalangium opilio?

it's the most common species apparently, and it looks similar

    could be wrong though

Harvestman was the name I had in the back of my mind but couldn't remember it.

E: Also I have the bigger shots of those or any of my other bug pics if you want them.

I always appreciate bug shots, if you'd like to PM them

    speaking of bugs

finally got around to identifying a bug that I'd seen a few times but couldn't figure out

I thought it was a moth at first, but the wings were all folded in a way that made it look like a beetle

using my incredibly sophisticated search skills, I now know it's a webworm moth
said sophisticated search skills may or may not have involved googling "orange insect black white spots"

I always liked Nature of Nature's Art for having a comic about a Lycosa Gulosa kicking the shit out of other spiders with arachnid martial arts.

The Lycosa one is a lot... weirder. There's no text in it, the speech bubbles are filled with colors and patterns meant to represent spider language that you hover over with your mouse to have translated.

    Case in point.

still waiting on spider eggs to hatch

the brown widows should be out aaaaany day now

there are also some labyrinth orbweavers, but that web got damaged by rain and the spider lady herself reached the end of her lifethread not too much later, so I'm not sure how those eggs are doing

I really hope they make it

I'm quite fond of that species

The first one in this video is probably the coolest type of web I have ever seen.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQABY9H1h1Y
Taut vertical strings that crawling insects bumble into and it yanks them up into the air like a rope noose trap. How do you even evolve such a behavior?

I found three fruit flies that had somehow managed to get into my fridge

    two of them had died

one of them was THE STRONGEST FRUIT FLY and had been living in the cold for I don't know how long

unfortunately for him he was also THE SLOWEST FRUIT FLY because cold does things to insect metabolisms

now he's the just as dead as the other two flies fly

Its a myth that craneflies eat mosquitos too, right? I do know that their grubs can wreck havoc on lawns

where I grew up they were known simply as Mosquito Eaters, but it turns out that no, they don't eat mosquitos at all. They dont eat anything! They're good for clumsily flying around, bumping into things and losing limbs left and right.

Slightly less populous (and therefore less annoying) version of fishflies/mayflies

It actually varies by species. The adults of some species don't feed at all and are incapable of feeding, but in some species the adults do feed but on nectar and such.
