So I booted this up again. Is it me, or does the game not care about CSR at all? It feels like I am playing the same folks I was playing back when I left, who now have the ability to destroy me since I havent played in forever. I look at waypoint after, and they all have like 10-15 CSR.
Then I go to Big Team Battle (where I never play) and everyone is terrible and i go like 30-4.
Correct me if I am wrong, but it feels like its still using my Tru Skill score, and finding folks with similar CSR AND similar Tru Skill. Which would be terrible, because then youd have a bunch of solid players all stuck at a low CSR because their Tru Skill is too high.
I also only played a few games, so it may just be a bad sample size.
I did a few games post CSR and found it to be the same. Frustratingly so since I was also trying to do achievements. :P
It'd be nice if the game actually allowed your trueskill to decay though or if it does decay it's at a higher rate. getting stomped when you drop by to visit, while being reasonably expected thing, does kinda make you reluctant to get back on the horse.
“I used to draw, hard to admit that I used to draw...”
Well, id be ok with being stomped, thats expected. My issue is being stomped by dudes with such low CSR. The problem is if it uses both trueskill and csr for matchmaking since csr lagged behind so bad. It would mean youd get pockets of trueskill 40 folks all playing eachother at CSR 15 and not moving much because they are all evenly matched.
Now, there is a chance im really just terrible and my CSR is accurate. But considering I was always 47+ in the old 1-50 ranks, and the folks in big team battle seem like actual 1-20 CSR players I kind of doubt that. Im half thinking of trying a free month of gold on a new gamertag to experiment and see if its way easier at low CSR and low trueskill. Based on BTB it seems so.
I know I shouldnt care...I have a beautiful wife and a beautiful daughter and I shouldnt need a videogame e-peen, but by gawd, I do! Im insecure and I do!!!
Wow. I just read they made sweeping changes to the multiplayer. I might have to try this game again, though I have a feeling it may be too late for me. I like the changes I'm reading but I'm curious what prompted them. Anyone know?
Spoons get the hell out of here. You cant come back to Halo the same day Im coming back to Halo. We already had the exact same opinions on everything, people will begin to assume we are the same person.
Also, I guess they reset trueskill, so the folks who kicked my butt were low CSR but good...so I must be bad now.

lol. Well, if it helps, I haven't really come back. My nephew still has my copy of the game. I'm just wondering what prompted them to make such a huge change to the gameplay.
Booo all I own is android...I wonder if it will work on windows 7....
I seem to recall that back when W8 was coming out, I said that if Microsoft released another Halo game PC-side they'd do the exact same thing as last time and make it exclusive to the new OS purely for the sake of it. And some people said to me: "No way, MS wouldn't be stupid enough to do that again!"
Freaking. Called. It. :P
Although it seems that they're so uninvested in the PC games market today that they couldn't even bother porting one of the core games. Something tells me I should feel vaguely annoyed by that, but eh.
lol... after I read your previous post and typed mine I was kinda revved to get back to playing Halo 4 tonight thinking about the beating I took, skewing gameplay for achievements didn't help either. I don't think that CSR has stabilized yet, and I'm also not sure how it applies between playlists.
I looked at my losses on the Castle DLC list and the players are running the range of CSR 1 - 20 as you observed as well. I know it took a little bit of time to get in matches, so it could just be that skill range for the games is larger on some too.
I guess we all need to hang in there a little longer?
As for the new halo game: can you even get to the app marketplace on Windows 7?
“I used to draw, hard to admit that I used to draw...”
Halo: Spartan Assault is a top-down twin-stick shooter for Windows 8 devices inspired by classic arcade shooters Robotron and Total Carnage.
The spin-off is a co-production between 343 Industries and Gatling Gears developer Vanguard Games, and is due out in July 2013 for $6.99 (the UK price is yet to be announced).
Spartan Assault will run on any device that runs Windows 8, including the Surface tablet, Windows 8 phones and Windows 8 PCs. Your progress is saved across multiple platforms, so you can start on Surface, for example, then continue on a Windows 8 Phone.
While the game has been optimised for touch devices you can use a mouse and keyboard if your device supports it. Xbox 360 controller support for the PC version will be added a couple of weeks after launch, 343 executive producer Dan Ayoub told Eurogamer at a recent briefing in London.
Spartan Assault uses virtual thumb sticks on either side of a touch device. The left controls movement of your Spartan, the right controls the direction of fire (there's a subtle lock-on assist to help you out). You can throw grenades, switch weapons, melee and jack ground vehicles using taps of the screen - but you can't jump, and there are no flying vehicles. The adaptive virtual thumb sticks move with you as your thumbs slide about the touch device.
The story is set between the events of Halo 3 and Halo 4 and revolves around Commander Sarah Palmer's rise from ODST to Spartan. The 25 missions are UNSC Infinity simulations of past battles against the Covenant, and Ayoub reckons it should take "upwards of two hours" to work through the entire campaign. There are multiple mission types, including protection, escort, survival and seek and destroy.
As in Halo 4, in Spartan Assault you can customise your loadout, choosing your primary and secondary weapons, and toggle skulls and boosters. In-game you earn experience points and Achievements, and you'll unlock new abilities and weapons, including some entirely new to the sci-fi series. You can also unlock exclusive emblems for Halo 4. "Looking forward you're going to be able to unlock some other things as well," Ayoub teased.
There's no multiplayer at launch - 343 will consider adding it after the game goes live - but there are leaderboards and weekly challenges designed to keep you coming back for more.
And, predictably, there are in-app purchases. You can grind to earn upgrades, or you can speed up your training, as Microsoft puts it, by buying credits for boosts, unique weapons and armour abilities with real-world money.
Ayoub said 343 created Spartan Assault because it wanted to give players a new way to engage in the Halo franchise.
"Traditionally players have always enjoyed that first-person shooter experience, but you've more or less been tethered to your living room television set. We wanted to make Halo literally mobile. How do you take this experience with you wherever you go?
"The second goal was to create the right game for the platform we're talking about," Ayoub continued. "We looked at a lot of other franchises that have just copy and pasted their play experience onto a mobile platform. That's not what we wanted to do.
"The final goal we had for this was to represent and show off the platform. Halo has always been a vanguard for the platform. It's always set the standard for what's possible on Microsoft platforms, and we wanted this to be no exception. We wanted people to look at this game and say, 'Oh my god, how did you guys do that? That looks amazing.'"
Ayoub was evasive when we asked whether Spartan Assault will eventually launch on non-Windows 8 devices, such as the iPad. "The goal with the game has been to push Microsoft platforms," he reiterated. "So at this point all of our development efforts have been focused on Windows 8 platforms to highlight those devices."
And what about Xbox Live Arcade? "We wanted to start on touch devices because the goal was to take it out of the living room and make it mobile," Ayoud replied. "Who knows what we're going to do down the line? This is our focus
343's publishing team, which is around 10 people, has been working with the Amsterdam-based Vanguard Games on Spartan Assault. Vanguard was set up in 2010 by Martin de Ronde and Michiel Mol, co-founders of Killzone developer Guerrilla Games. "We in the publishing team have been interested in touch-based devices for some time," Ayoub said. "We've been looking at different ways to play Halo, but we wanted to take our time with it."
Meanwhile, Microsoft announced a three-part comic book series called Halo: Initiation from Dark Horse, which goes into more detail on Sarah Palmer's rise from ODST to Spartan and ties in with Spartan Assault.

Now there's a comic and a game about a character nobody likes. Awesome.
I like twinstick shooters. Looks like a pretty fun distraction. I figure I can't go too wrong for $8.
Yeah, it's a twinstick shooter with possible RPG elements... hard to go wrong with that. It's the exact kind of game I've been looking for to play on my Surface without hopping onto another ecosystem.
“I used to draw, hard to admit that I used to draw...”
Popped Halo 4 back into the tray for the first time in forever. Not a huge population, but it is morning. Anyone still group up on a regular basis for this, or am I going to have to pub it up?

I play fairly regularly, typically solo. I'd be down to group up. Don't usually have my mic on though since I mostly play when my wife is sleeping. Anyway, my tag is mosssnack12 if you wanna add me. I'm also in the metatag.
for me it was hilarious because I had joked to my friend at the start of the trailer that it was halo 5 because the idea of that big old helmet under the cloak was funny
and then I saw master chief's arm and hahaaha it actually was
Finally got around to trying out the MP post update. IDK if it's the change, the playlist, trying to get achievements, me being rusty.. or all of those... but I'm getting beat up pretty badly, lol.

Halsey used to be awesome. Now her intentions have been manipulated into Forerunner motives and her character has become a guilt ridden punching bag, at least in the novels.
Nylund and Staten's Halsey was awesome. My bitterness knows no bounds.

Oh jesus, fuck the Knights. I can't make sense of how headshots work with them, and that GODDAMN TELEPORTING...... you can't tell where they go and it recharges their shields..... I just find fights against them frustrating.

I just find fights against them frustrating. At least the Lancers have the decency to throw themselves upon your shotgun before they completely heal themselves.
In my experience, headshotting the Knights was a waste of time. Clear out Watchers then Crawlers, grab and automatic, dump a clip in then punch them in their fake boney faces.

Knight headshots are only when shields are down + you can see the skull. Personally, I usually went for the "carry a shotgun" method of dealing with them.
I personally felt that Knights helped bring close and mid range combat back into the single player. A lot of Legendary in previous games for me was stand off and pot shot Elites tod eath.
I don't think that teleportation is necesarry for CQC in campaign. CQC in my experience is actually viable against most enemies in 4, as they've got lower health. They also could just have more agressive AI, as opposed to the usual hang back and be shot.

I actually want to see more, but why is a weather resistant set of armor underneath a cloak? Sand, dirt, etc. has never affected MJOLNIR before.
and it lets them pretend its not halo for 30 seconds of the trailer

Then they'd probably just bring back the Flood again though.
I'm guessing he's talking about the writers bringing back the flood rather than the actual forerunners doing it
but at the moment I might enjoy that more than another game fighting prometheans
