fzsT8.pngMost Frequently Asked QuestionstErbf.png

1. Steam's search tool is cumbersome and not very informative. Is there a website, other than Steam's, I can go to find out what's on sale?
Steam Sales is great for current sales and for the history of each game (when it has been on sale before, etc).
SteamGameSales.com is good for what's on sale now.

2. Can I register this copy of (Insert Game Here) on Steam?
Here's a list of games you can register on Steam. You can always add a non-Steam game to your Steam games list, so that people can see you playing it. You can also use this to add your own shortcuts with fake names to your Steam games list to make it look like you're playing Episode 3. Hilarious, right?

3. If I buy a game pack that already includes a game I own, can I gift that game?
Not usually. You're welcome to ask in this thread, although if you Google it it'll probably be answered even faster. Valve games are typically the only packs that let you do this, and even then it sometimes doesn't work.

4. Why isn't {Insert Game Here} available in my horrible little corner of the earth?
Many Steam games might be unavailable in your country if you have the temerity to live outside of the United States. This is not Steam's fault. Regional game availability is determined solely by the publisher, who should be the source of your ire. Gifting works regardless of region so you might find some helpful person in North America who can gift you the game. This very thread is a great place to ask!

5. How do I get an invite to the Penny Arcade Steam group?
The most convenient way is to just post a link to your Steam profile page (getting one of the swank signatures described below makes it easy) and ask for an invite. Just as a word of advice, we tend to prefer that you be a regular contributor to get an invite to the group. The rule of thumb is 6 months of activity on the forums. We are well known for our generosity, and like to make sure any new additions are here for the good of the community, and not to leech during sales. That said, we're a friendly group, so make yourself at home and start posting and you'll be there in no time!

6. As a Classy Person I am giving away a game on SteamGifts. How do I get the pretty picture to post in the thread?
wCby7.png?1

7. My Steam Chat Font is Too Small!

fzsT8.pngSome Words on GiftingtErbf.png

If you receive a game or pack via a gift or a contest, remember to thank that person either through a PM or by announcing it in the thread. This is not optional. We are classy gentlemen and will act as such.

Steam's new gifting features allow you to store up games in your gift bank when you purchase them, instead of having to email yourself the gift link. It'll be an option during checkout.

A few things to remember as a giftee:
1. Make it possible to track you from PA Forums to Steam. A link directly to your steam ID is usually the most convenient. Remember, your Steam ID is different than your steam name. If you just include text to your steam name, we have to search and scroll through 5 pages to find you (and we may not find you if you're not using the same name/avatar combo!).

2. Make it possible to track you from Steam to PA Forums. Best bet is using similar avatar/name. Understandably, some people don't want to do that. In that case, you should have "I'm ______ on Penny Arcade Forums!" in your profile blurb.

Generally speaking, if you're selected for a gift from a stranger on here it will be, usually, one of two ways:

You will either post in the thread (so they will go to your profile to friend you and then to the store to send a gift.
—or—
Someone will want to gift a certain game and go to the store page where you can see everyone who has it on their wishlist.

Also, remember that a gifter can see when you added a game to your wishlist. If you add it on the day of the sale, you might have a smaller chance of being gifted it than someone who has been interested in it since release. Gifters should also make sure they are identifiable from Steam to PA Forums. Some people are shy and are too nervous to message a gifter and say "hey thanks, I have no idea who you are on forums!"

fzsT8.pngAn Important Word on ConteststErbf.png

If you decide to run or participate in a giveaway contest for gift copies of games, please remember that all entry submissions must now be made via PM. The forum mods have stated that pages of the thread being filled with pictures, videos, etc. submitted as contest entries will lead to such contests being banned. So please, for the sake of the thread – take it to PMs.

Steam Mover
Does your Steam library have 800 games? Do you wish you could move some of those games to different hard drives instead of deleting them entirely and then downloading them again when you want to play them? Steam Mover is here for you.

Steam Price Guide
Do you have the misfortune to live somewhere other than America? Steam hates you! Luckily, this cool website with prices for Steam games all around the world is here to help, so you can know if you want to ask an American friend to buy the game for you or not. Hint: you probably do.

Aussies
You need this program.

It reconfigures your Windows IPSEC settings (run it as an admin) to block out all but the servers which don't count towards your download quota on Steam. Now supports a bunch of ISPs through a graphical interface.

Basically guarantees you won't add to your download quota with Steam.

Also: Download TCPview: TCPView

Then, use TCPview to close all Steam TCP servers (this is important, NOT the UDP ones, just the TCP ones). Steam will then reconnect to a different server, which will hopefully get you a better speed. If you don't go faster in a couple of seconds, retry until you get a speed you like.

I've also been told you Aussies might want to try Angus Wolfcastle's SteamManager. Setting it up is easy is you follow the instructions here. If you find you're still being charged for your steam downloads, try changing the setting like in this link here.

fzsT8.pngCool Community Add-OnstErbf.png

Steam Signatures
With such a cool service, someone must have done some extra things to build on it. The forums have one such man, who made some super cool Steam signatures. Suds is his name and killing is his game. Except for the killing. The signatures automatically use backgrounds for the games and the correct icon. Pretty neat, and they're 100% free!

Sample signature:
steam_sig.png

Steam Cleaner
Steam Cleaner is a handy little tool to remove all those .NET installers and DirectX installers and so on that every Steam game downloads because it's apparently 1927 in computer years and nobody has figured out how to let you install a Steam game without going through a 12 step process to reinstall a bunch of stuff you installed yesterday when you played another Steam game.

Steam Calculator
You can also use a script on his Steam Calculator page to see how much your Steam account would be worth if you had taken advantage of some obscure, arcane combination of special deals that nobody could ever have taken advantage of. Or something sort of like that.

Steam Roulette
Having trouble picking a game out of your burgeoning [strike]backlog[/strike] gamebank to play? Let VicWhiten's Steam Roulette decide! Just type in your Steam community ID (easier if you set up a custom URL on your Steam profile page), and Steam Roulette will read your library and randomly pick one game every time you hit "Spin the Wheel!" It even connects to Steam to allow you to install or start the game with a single click.

So now that it's a new thread, everyone should buy Natural Selection 2 so that it doesn't drop from the #1 bestseller slot on Steam (here's the Penny Arcade thread). And here is my buying guide for the Halloween sale:

Games You Ought to Maybe Buy:

Limbo - A stupendously atmospheric puzzle platformer about loneliness and dying a lot but not in the VVVVVV/Super Meat Boy sense of dying in a platformer.
    $2.49 | PA Thread

Atom Zombie Smasher - A fast paced action strategy game where you must evacuate civilians from different parts of Nuevo Aires before they are eaten by zombies. Sometimes you need to kill a few civilians to save the rest, like when you need to literally destroy half the city to stop the zombies. The game has a wonderful sense of humor and style that only Blendo Games games have, and it has a lot of replayability thanks to an in-game mod install menu that lets you tweak your game with community contributions.
    $2.49 | PA Thread

Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition - Easily one of the best RPGs ever made. The world is fleshed out in incredible detail, with believable and interesting locations that are populated by exactly the kinds of people who would live in the world. Where does the food come from? Where do the soldiers stay? Where are the trading routes? This is all fully realized. The story is amazing, the DLC is hilarious, the quests are interesting and have multiple solutions, there are lots of speech checks, the announcer on Radio New Vegas is Wayne Newton, there's a robot called FISTO... this is miles ahead of Fallout 3 and, I think, better than Fallout 2.
$14.99 | PA Thread for the franchise

BioShock 2 - In my opinion, a worthy followup to the original. The story isn't bad and it doesn't rely on a twist, but where it really improves is the gameplay. You can now wield a plasmid and a weapon together at all times, and because you play as a Big Daddy, you get some really interesting weapons, including that fucking drill. You can really go to town on people. The DLC, Minerva's Den, is an amazing short story that surpasses most of what BioShock and BioShock 2 have to offer.
$4.99 | PA Thread for the franchise

Space Pirates and Zombies - A fairly fun game where you fly your mothership around to various parts of space and then send out your fleet to accomplish missions. You can customize all the ships in your fleet to match your playstyle and it's a lot of fun to unlock new ships and weapons and slowly grow more powerful. The game plays like Star Control's space combat.
$2.49 | PA Thread which appears to be broken?

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines - Another one of the greatest RPGs made, this motherfucker NEVER goes on sale so buy it right now if you like Deus Ex or games like that.
$4.99 | PA Thread even though it looks like a Redemption thread (it isn't)

Home - Haven't played it but people seem to like it.
    $1.49 | No PA Thread :(

Rock of Ages - What do you get when you cross Monty Python, Marble Madness, and an art history class? The funniest tower defense/boulder rolling game ever to come out of a Chilean developer. Recently patched to have even better multiplayer and for Halloween, it has a ghost boulder.
    $2.49 | PA Thread

Nancy Drew®: Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake - Fucking GHOST DOGS am I right
$1.74 | For some reason we have no thread for this game

Someday I'm gonna get here fast enough to make the "new thread smell" post. Someday.
The NS2 community is not going to dry up. It has a dedicated fanbase, something War of the Roses and Guns of Icarus didn't. It has a competitive community, something those two games didn't have. It has been played for more than a year now in large numbers, something those two games can't claim. The original mod still has players. And there's literally dozens if not hundreds of hours of NS2 footage on YouTube if you want to check it out.

This is excellent news, then - means I can wait to pick it up 'til the Christmas sale or later, and still have people to play it with.
I wasn't trying to imply WotR or GoIO were better games at all... just that I already bought 'em, which leaves no time for NS2. For now.

    NEXT GIVEAWAY!

    1679.jpg

The Last Remnant is an awesome RPG with a truly bizarre encounter and combat and battle and leveling and character and team and army management system.

So, if you want to enter to win you need to PM me with what you would do if you found yourself in command of a vast army. Would you invade Poland? Would you round up and eliminate Hippies? Would you suddenly become bogged down in the logistics of how in the hell someone put you in charge and descend into an ever-maddening downward spiral of depression and angst as you tried to manage payroll, keep your army fed, and find housing for 100,000 (or however the hell many) troops under your auspicious charge? I'm just curious what your first thought and/or action would be.

Alternately, you could just PM me the reason you want the game.

Either way, I'll PM you back the url for the Steamgifts giveaway.

This one is odd because I'm going to cap the number of entries. I'm not going to tell you the number at which I'll cap it, but I will. I totally will. Probably. So act fast.

    Ends Saturday at Midnight.

They Bleed Pixels is fucking excellent.

It's hard as nails but super compelling. Get it if you like precision platformers with fast action combo oriented combat. The checkpoint system is truly neat. You can make your own by earning eldritch power through high combo kills and gem (actually globules of blood) pickups. Once you charge up the meter you stand still in a safe spot for a few moments and voila, you have a new checkpoint and refilled health. The controls are tight, the gameplay is fluid and fast and the presentation is fantastic. It's a wonderful, cartoony gothic horror mashup with awesome music.

Well folks, I wasn't able to drum up enough interest for a shared 4-pack of Guns of Icarus Online. So obviously I had to just buy the 4 pack myself, and so...

As a fictional setting, I find Steampunk as likeable as the next guy - something about the mixture of historical nostalgia, specifically the Victorian zeitgeist, mixed with the sense of wonder from science fiction, creates incredibly compelling worlds. Or maybe I just like airships.

Anyway, since The Difference Engine, I fondly watched as Steampunk developed its own literary niche.
I was pleased by its momentum as the first self-consciously Steampunk authors started producing novels and games set in such rich worlds.
I was then wary as Steampunk kept gaining popularity and ubiquity, soon shedding the confined interest of the Cyberpunk and Historical Fiction movements that birthed it.
And later I was horrified as this otherwise-wonderful setting and style melted into the goth fashion movement, only to splash over into mainstream pop culture in vast gouts of cloying, obnoxious trendiness.
Steampunk is everywhere these days, bandied about like any other cheap infantile buzzword. We have Steampunk children's shows, and shitty Steampunk props being sold at dollar stores. Ridiculous "Steampunk" versions of any/all other works of fiction or costume ideas crop up like weeds in a garden ("OMG Steampunk Batman! Steampunk Star Wars, you guys! Steampunk Barbie!"). And any jackass with some aviator goggles and gears glued to his tailcoat claims to be "a Steampunk".

It has, in short, gone from a favourite to a fuck-no.

And yet, I find myself still drawn to the settings, still compelled by the worlds, still wanting to fly an airship, and blow the shit out of other airships... hence Guns of Icarus Online.

    The Contest:

To win your very own copy of GoIO (pronounced goy-oh), PM me the silliest, funniest, most mockable or pathetic Steampunk costume or gadget you can find. Full points for schadenfreude.
Winning entries will be posted in the thread.

This contest is open to all active members of the Penny Arcade forums. As always, honorary entries are welcome - just mention that somewhere in your PM.
I'll pick the winners sometime on Wednesday.
    Good luck!

Your gift post is better than mine, that makes me sad.

    It's not a contest!
I mean, they both are but...

I wanted to point out a game that isn't on the main page of the sale, but should be taken into consideration for your spooky holiday dollars: Scratches: Directors Cut.

Not your traditional halloween story, but a fantastic point & click adventure all the same. Scratches does what many games don't bother to do: make you feel at ease and yet unease'd at the same time. You play as a writer whose friend has hooked him up with an old mansion out in the woods for inspiration. He's got writer's block and needs to finish his latest work. Things seem cozy at first, yet further inspection yeilds the place's strange past and the even stranger things its owner got into before it was abandoned. Things really begin to take a turn as he hears strange scratching noises coming from somewhere in the house at night.

It's about 6-8 hours long unless some of the puzzles throw you for a loop (and they will) but the game seeps atmosphere out of every pore and deserves your attention. Especially at $2.50. One of the most underrated games of the sale easily.

Listen to Cheesecake. I played this game yeeeeeeeeeeeears ago (along with The 7th Guest and The 11th Hour, oh man) and loved it back then. It may not hold up perfectly, but it really does ooze atmosphere the way few modern games do.

Everyone needs to buy the LucasArts Adventure Pack on Steam right now, because with Disney buying LA you never know what will happen with its availability in the future.

And then play The Dig, because The Dig is neat.

Loved The Dig, especially when Boston has his little rant in the power room. I always thought it was missing a line, though:
Boston: "Brink, you've been acting funny ever since you came back from the dead. ... I can't believe I just said that."
