So, I am looking for a new fun multiplayer FPS.
I have clocked hundreds of hours in TF2 and want something new.
I have never before played a CoD game, since the first one. And never in multiplayer
Is BlOps 2 good to get started? I read in some reviews that multiplayer is very harsh for new players, will the experience from TF2 count for something or are weapon mechanics and skills so varied that it takes long to get into?
Is this game fun and should I buy it?

If you're coming from TF2 and expect Call of Duty to be anything remotely close, you're in for a world of hurt.
There is no teamplay if you play by yourself. There's no strategy or planning. People run around like jackasses with their heads cut off and will intentionally lose the game for you 99% of the time if you try to help or teach them anything. The connections are terrible unless you're on PC, but then you're more likely to run into griefers with mods of all sorts.
The only real similarities and skills that will transfer from TF2 to Call of Duty are your basic twitch FPS skills. Otherwise, it's an entirely new skillset.
It's a horrifically frustrating series and unless you've got a group of friends to play with, I'd avoid it. There are far better options out there - unless your goal is to play with it folks that you know. It's also a good idea that those folks are folks that you have a good time complaining about things vehemently with.

Honest answer: Any amount of hours of any other FPS will not make you ready for this. Blops 2 is currently riddled with connection issues. Bullets disappear and sometimes curve around corners among other treats. You will learn a lot of new things about your mother playing this. I never knew she was that busy.
Underneath all the bullshit this game has right now, I'd say this is the best CoD to date. If you wanna risk it and buy it, hoping they will fix it, then go for it. It's fun when you're drunk and playing with friends.
Also, I wouldn't call the multiplayer harsh for new players. Just take the FAL and know what being God feels like.

Aye, Call of Duty is a game that is the polar opposite of harsh for new players. The learning curve is similar to the Bonneville salt flats. Pick up sniper. Abuse aim assist. Profit.

Well the campaign is supposed to be pretty good and I guess zombies could be fun, so maybe I will risk it.

The campaign is a clusterfuck. It's interactive Michael Bay with enough plot holes to rival a street in Detroit. Personally, I think it's the worst Call of Duty campaign yet.
its fun, people in this thread like to complain. a lot. if you have the option get it from a redbox and see for yourself. youre not going to have much crossover in skills between this and TF2, that much is true.

It's totally fun. I guess I forgot to mention that moderately important detail.
If you come in expecting something like TF2, you'll be bummed. But being fresh to the series means you aren't as jaded as a lot of the people (myself included) in this thread. But I feel that it's still a very fun game, and the best yet in the series.
Also many of the players here are good and are used to doing well. If you are an average FPS ability player (like me) all the issues will not be nearly as frustrating, as breaking even on average is my expectation. If I was used to rocking a 2+ K/ D ratio, the lag and connection issues would be more distracting.

Whoa, whoa. Maybe worse from a gameplay perspective, but I can't believe the argument that this is the worse story. Sure, all COD stories suck, but at least this one didn't have Russia invade America with an army of military wizards. Or America emp the Northwest with a magic nuke...

This is probably more true than we're ever likely to admit. Most of the people I know, who I would consider to be "average" or "casual" Call of Duty players, don't complain about Black Ops II at all; most of them think it's fantastic. I have a friend, who plays with us on occasion, who is probably the most objective-obsessed player I've ever met -so much so, in fact, that he's happy to go negative every game so long as it means we hold Bravo the entire fucking time- and he thinks Black Ops II is great. He averages about a ~1.0 K/D spread in this game, which is pretty much what he carries in every other game in the series. So it's no big thing to him.
But a lot of us in this thread hold ourselves up to pretty high standards. It bothers the absolute fuck out of me that I only carry a 1.34 K/D in BO2, for example, because I hold pretty steady at around 2.5-3.0 or so in previous games. I'm getting there, though. It's just a matter of time. But it can be really frustrating when you have all of these expectations for yourself, and they're all just out of reach.
So doing the daily clan challenge for Domination caps with my brother tonight. We are rocking Dom caps like a boss. 9-ish caps each a round. Feeling boss. Look at the score board and see at the end of both rounds 3 or more team mates having 1-2 caps...max. Da Fuq? Who goes into Domination and not play the objective? Its not like ground war where TDM and KC appear. People just legit walk past the flag and wander off into the sunset.
2 caps is enough to win the game.
9 caps is enough to piss off everyone on your team as you switch the enemy spawns to be behind them constantly.
Why would you have 9 caps in a game? Dick move, bro
Why would you have 9 caps in a game? Dick move, bro
How I get a bajillion caps with pubbies:
> Team takes A
> Team fucks off, fearsomepirate is taking B
> Announcer is all "We're losing A!"
> fearsomepirate runs back to A, kills the guy by himself, caps A.
> Announcer is all, "We're losing B!"
> fearsomepirate runs toward B, gets killed
> "We're losing A!"
> "We're being dominated, take those positions!"
> fearsomepirate spawns by C with three other guys.
> Three other guys fuck off, fearsomepirate takes C alone.
And I spend the rest of the match just trying to keep one flag green, which is usually lost immediately after taking it, which means I get to take it again. Or the enemy team flips the spawn, and I spawn near an unprotected red flag.
Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...nobody.

COD is fun. If you like the way classes work in a synergistic way to get objectives, you will be sorely disappointed, because pubbies are idiots and playing with a team of people who make a minimal effort to win means you just absolutely stomp the pubbies. If what you want is something where your class matters and winning is a thing that takes effort, play Battlefield. It's not too hard to find a group to play with in that game.
Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...nobody.

So my GF can't play combat training without an internet connection in BlOps 1. Is this true for BlOps 2 also? I'd like to let her play a little fake multi player, but I dont feel like digging up my 100' Ethernet cable.
fearsomepirateI ate a pickle once.Registered Userregular
In BlOps1, you can play against bots locally if you can get to an Internet connection and download the patch. But BlOps2 bots can play all the modes except SnD. BlOps2 bots.
Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...nobody.

Yeah, I CAN get internet to it. I'm just lazy. Also, tripping hazard. Better she play 2 anyway, since she likes to play a match or two when I'm playing with the bros. She especially likes party games with you guys. Gun game and the like.
I remember why I don't play Sticks and Stones except with you guys. When the whole team isn't talking it fucking sucks when you are winning and get tomahawked with fifteen seconds to go. Also the asshole who ended up winning was just running around and knifing.

I assume you meant to say "2 caps per round is enough to win the game."
Well, that is only true if you hold on to both those points once they are captured.
I've found that it's not uncommon to lose one (or more) points more than once during a game.
At least when grouped with ppl who view Dom as "TDM with distracting objectives".

I thought I'd try this game postpatch since I havent booted it up in a while, yeah in the 4 matches I've played so far there was severe rubberbanding, 1 shot kills (latency), curving bullets and literally a full magazine dumped centermass on a guy who didnt die.
The patch made it even worse for me? Thats pretty impressive, the only thing thats even more impressive is that this Vonderhaar tool is still saying there isnt any issues.
I played a game of Nuketown after changing my kill streaks to low stuff, HKD/Hellstorm/Lightning strike because I wasn't getting my streaks, and then of course I have a life where I run through everything three times. I could have had my VTOL! Granted if I had that on I wouldn't have done well, and those streaks killed the shit out of the bad guys, but still. Also the game doesn't seem to have recorded my playing of that game correctly as well. Of course not, I did really well.
Anyone else digging the MTAR? I couldn't wait to stop using it when I first started, but I went back and tried it recently.
The iron sight are the closest thing to a built-in reflex you can get, so that frees up an attachment slot. I've been dominating with this class:
MTAR w/ Supressor and Quick Draw
SMAW
Flak Jacket
Scavenger
Tactical Mask OR Engineer
2 Frag Grenades w/Danger Close
The MTAR seems to win a lot of gunfights. Nice ROF, good accuracy. I run around tossing frag grenades and shooting SMAWs into sniper nests, replenishing my scav packs with sneaky MTAR work around the edged of the map. Pretty sick build. Went 24-4 the first game with it, 21-0 the second.
Frags are so good this time around. MW3 you could have one shoved up your ass and take 15 damage. This time they wreck your shit. I get like 4-5 kills from them a match when used liberally w/Scav.
This. I think I was host a number of times when I was running the party last night, and it was a completely different game. Even when I wasn't host, the connections I was playing on were so much better than what I usually get with you guys.
Joking aside, it is pretty jarring going from a smaller TV to a much larger TV.
Yeah, I've played on my monitor since the waning months of MW2, and I can't go back now. Part of the problem is not instinctively knowing the exact center of the screen, part of it is being so far away and feeling slightly disconnected, and part of it, I think, is a tiny bit of input lag on my TV. 720p 60hz, so what can you do? Thing was a steal though. Thanks Black Friday!
Had some pretty rough games this afternoon. Sort of running with a hodge-podge of different groups. I mean, they're all good players, but none of the groups sort of know how to communicate with any of the others, so it was a little messy. Still, I had a lot of fun. I played with one of @0Replace4Displace's friends, named LazyEye, I think? He seemed like a really cool guy. Does he read these forums? I'd like to play again with him when we've got our regular crew; dude seems like he'd be awesome to play more with.
Nuketown is either awesome or the worst. When I fucking worked the enemy team with my Saiga it was on Nuketown and it was good, but other times they get in your spawn and there's nowhere for it to flip to and some guy is just hanging out on the deck killing everybody as they show up.
I got booted from Hardcore today when I got a collateral with my saiga on the good guys. I panicked when I saw everybody who wasn't me on our team running at me, couldn't process the presence of names fast enough. Balances out the game I played where I was killed by everybody on my team.
