Rather than continue on with a new main character and a higher number, the newly announced Disgaea D2 will be a direct sequel to the original Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. Laharl, Etna, and Flonne will make their return as the main characters for the new game, and it will tell the story of what happens with them after the first game.
Disgaea D2 will be released exclusively for the PS3 on March 20, 2013 in Japan.

I'm stoked about this, seriously. That's not something I've felt with Disgaea in a long time, and it all has to do with the return of Laharl and friends.
In all honesty, I haven't enjoyed any of the protagonists introduced after the first Disgaea as much as I have with the original group. Laharl, Etna, and Flonne perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the series from the very beginning, and nearly every attempt NIS made afterward to change up the roster either resulted in lackluster replacements (Adel) or not-quite-there knockoffs (Mao).
I'm very happy to see the original trio back in action, and also like Laharl's swank new pants. Etna's smaller shorts...eh, I'll get used to it.
Also if you didn't notice, looks like the end of the trailer is hinting at
the return of Vulcanus
Yes to all of this. All hail the one true Overlord.

Now if only they'd get back Amanda Winn-Lee for Etna.
All of her other replacements paled by comparison.

... Well actually don't get me wrong, the sequels hit it on the gameplay too and they were entertaining. But I like sequels that are, y'know, sequels and not spinoffs.
I want this.
Yeah, you say that now, and then in a few months you'll see a clip of Laharl stating his fear of big-chested women, Etna will will be mocking him, and Flonne will be giggling in her naive way. You'll be right back on board.
I'm not proud of that.
i know soooo many people who loved loved LOVED the first game.

Disgaea 2 was my favorite though. Such a good game.

Still this is the first D game I've been interested in for some time. D1 is the only game in that series I like.
that is just a kind of large belt you are not fooling anyone

Happy happy, joy joy!
Atlus did localize the only good Disgaea game though.
This is the one thing I'm wary of is the original Disgaea was already pretty grindy and obtuse, and the later games just piled on more and more and more and more.
I'll suffer through some degree of it in the name of Laharl/Etna/Flonne though.

I dunno. You're totally right the later games did up the grind factor. But I also found they were a lot more easier to break. 2 let you cheese your way to a lv9999 using level doubling geo panels. 3 let you flat out duplicate items, which besides the obvious uses also let you build up specialists at an exponential rate. And 4 was even easier in terms of specialist leveling, and also had item cloning too (including a 100% easy way to do it, but was technically a bug which I believe was patched out a while ago).
To put it another way, the original Disgaea is the one I find to be the hardest to crack into the postgame bits. Every game since then has made it easier to do so.
Disgaea 1 might have been the hardest postgame to get into, but it was also over pretty quickly. Do the bonus maps, get Priere and Marjoly, capture some Surts, kill Baal/UPB, beat Item God 2. Simpler times :P
My arm is currently throbbing in pain from trying to finish Prinny: Can I Really be the Hero as I type this. Seconding the want for a Vita release (for this and 4).

You have to finish the original game. The ending is tremendous.
One takes forty hours. The other forty DAYS.
An army of Majins + the main characters + 1 angel at level 9999.... yup. DAYS.

I can't tell if you are agreeing or disagreeing with me but it took me and a friend about all of our remaining summer to beat the final final boss, and we played the shit out of the game.
I'm sure these days people know all the tricks on how to do it faster but man we had a lot of work building up our duders to the point where we could survive.
Wait, let me rephrase that.
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?
