For me the Item World was always the mountain that I had to climb to enjoy the game. The idea that I go into an item and kill stuff to make the item better and repeatedly do that to make it stronger was so daunting that I put the game down (last one I played was D3). But D5 kinda eases you into the idea of improving your weapons.
You missed out on Valvatorez, the only Disgaea protagonist to not be a giant obnoxious dickwad and actually be the pillar of the team in more than just lipservice.
Disgaea 4 was massive though, especially with all the DLC added modes and whatnot, which are part and parcel of the Vita version. Although some of it, especially the Artina chapter, is cancerously awful.
Every time I think about Disgaea 5's plot, the part I hate the most eats more of the other memory. I would say that about 65 % of the plot is one scene.

I try not looking at it that way. I use item world when I'm stuck in an episode and all other grinding would be a lot harder to do. I can gain levels, raise HL, and strengthen my items. If you're just going in there to level up items though, I can see where it would feel tedious as hell.
I wanted to like the story. But about half way through I skipped everything even remotely related to the story. I'd talk to the people in the base and skip those vignettes just to get their stupid icons off my screen.

this thread has me itching to play disgaea, but my ps3 is packed up since I'm moving in 2 weeks, and original disgaea/phantom brave i don't think will scratch the right itch :bigfrown:

Oh I know. I ended up really liking it. But when I popped in Disgaea 3 for the first time and they started talking about the item world my eyes grew big and I had to set it down.
soul nomad fyi is like ogre battle, you have 'rooms' which let you put so many characters in them and give them a buff. Super fun, I finally beat that one about a year ago.
I can't figure out interrogation or why I care about prisoners at all, really. It seems really inefficient with limited benefits.
There's two main benefits.
First, prisoners can be spent to power up your squads. There's some real nice benefits in the squads list, like double-strength innocents.
Second, extracting a prisoner's power gives you a permanent stat boost to whoever you give it to, based on a percentage of the prisoner's stats. This will be essential later on to let you break the natural stat cap.
The actual interrogation mechanic is pretty dumb, so there's no point learning all the nuances. Put a strong character in the interrogation squad, level it up to get the 'interrogate all at once' ability, and then just spam the Special option at the bottom of the list until they're all done. You always want to interrogate prisoners before spending them, because they're worth three times as much like that.
So as someone completely new to Disgaea are there any pointers or things I should be aware of when giving this a go for the first time this weekend?
Don't worry about stuff like item world and the hardcore grinding aspects unless you want to do the postgame content and only then don't bother until the story is over.
People often make the mistake of thinking thats the whole Disgaea experience and its required when you can pretty much play the main story like a straightforward SRPG and then call it a day after the ending.

Disagree about the dubious worth part. Including multipliers the stat cap for naked characters is 20 million, whereas a fully extracted-up character would be at 40 million. And with extracts you can boost five different characters at once by using a maid, so it's way more efficient than trying to get 5 different 20 million stat pieces from the Item World.

So tip! Eventually you can customize where all the units in your base are, so you can put them all by the portal and save yourself running around.

In my experience the important quests are the ones that let you recruit new units- Those i never had to work at just playing the game they would complete.

Make sure the game is fully up to date, the day one update fixed some known crashes. Also go into settings and turn on autosave, it saves every time you finish a mission in a special autosave slot.

Two or three people can be good to have, especially on large maps, but one superman can handle most situations. There's roadie-work for weak people, too, so they don't have to feel abandoned.
I finally had a good chunk of time to play, and ended up getting to the third chapter. It already seems like some units have fallen behind in levels to the point where they aren't doing any damage, so catching them up is going to be difficult. I ended up buying them expensive weapons because I don't want to abandon them. I am not optimistic about my orc's chances of keeping up, but maybe he can prove me wrong (is that a general thing with monster classes? that the earlier ones get outclassed by the later ones?).
Anyways this game is fun and there is no chance that i am taking advantage of all the systems that are available to me.
