Let's talk about how we talk

Burning OrganBurning Organ Registered User regular
Languages!

Let's talk about them for a second. According to Wikipedia there are an estimated 6000 to 7000 languages, which is a crazy number. Currently I'm trying to learn more languages, but I don't think I will ever be able to speak even .1% of the worlds languages.
So there are a lot of languages and most of them are pretty damn different (although there are exceptions to this, for example Swedish, Danish and Norwegian) so learning a different language can be pretty hard, depending on how close that language is to any other language you currently know.

I myself know English, Swedish, Finnish and I can understand some German and am currently studying Mandarin Chinese which is a pretty damn interesting language. All of these are very different, although German and Swedish share quite a few words, as do they with English, which really helps when trying to learn German. Chinese is almost easy, except for the different tones used to change the meanings of words and the characters being very foreign to me. There are quite a few of the characters as well, but some of them are just combinations of two or more characters, for example home, 家 is a combination of roof 宀 and a pig under the roof 豕

So what languages do you know se++? Do you want to learn more languages? Maybe someone on se++ can help you with that!

Being half-Portuguese and half-Mexican wasn't enough for my folks to ever teach me how to speak Portuguese or Spanish. In middle school, 8th grade, we had elective class choices and not enough people signed up for them. So the three most popular choices were combined into a single course - Spanish, French, and Japanese. And in highschool I took a couple years of German. Which I promptly forgot.

I hate getting grilled by Mexican immigrants for not being able to speak Spanish and it saddens me that it happens a lot.

I can only speak english though I'm gonna go back to trying to use duolingo since they added French and Portuguese and those seem like good enough languages to learn.

Also, I'm taking German right now, but apparently this is a very rules-oriented langauge, so it's not going very well.

Plus, my stupid English tongue can't make the proper sounds.
