not that the guys in the old days made tons of money either, but back then the companies had pretty strict art mentoring systems so every illustrator was at least up to a certain minimum standard. since switching to freelancers, that has gone completely bye-bye and there are successful comic artists who literally just trace pornography now. more skilled guys tend to either only do prestige projects that interest them, or they gradually move into advertising and commercial illustration.
