Does anybody here know how sticky/slow mouse wheel?

Hopefully this is in the right place.

I've had the same mouse for about a year and a half or so (specifically, a wired microsoft comfort optical mouse 4500) and for the past month or so I've been noticing that the mouse wheel gets stuck at times and needs a little more force to get it moving again. The rubber band on the wheel has shredded a bit so I'm guessing over time there's been a mix of rubber and other gunk that's increased friction at times. I'm tempted to take cut the rubber and take it off and see if that does anything but I'd prefer to be able to fix it another way. I hope there's a quick and easy way to sort it out because I don't want to have to buy a new mouse unless it's the only option (mainly because I'm a tightfisted starving student on a budget).

Open the mouse up and see if any of the rubber has wrapped itself around the axel for the mouse wheel, that would be my guess as to whats causing the jams.

    A NEW DILEMMA APPROACHES!

Turns out where most mice have a screw on the bottom that makes taking it apart much easier mine has just got a solid piece of plastic for a bottom, so this thing is going to be awkward as hell to open up.

did you check under any stickers/sliders that are on the bottom? most mice hide the screw holes behind things.

I finally managed to get the sliders off, they were slotted under the base so it took a little a bit of awkward tinkering to get them out. Looks like they didn't want anyone to be able to take this thing apart when they made it. I've cleaned out the gunk and it's scrolling fine now but I think I'm gonna have to replace the wheel once the band snaps. It shouldn't be too hard though, I think we've got an old mouse I can cannibalize (sod's law it's been thrown out by now). Thanks for the help.

glad you got it working. Most mice you have to open up at some point to clear out any junk in the wheel.
