Welcome to the Nintendo 3DS thread!
MCJjd.jpg

This is the thread for general 3DS discussion. To keep the conversation from getting too busy, try to look for other threads before posting about something in here. For example, the eShop Thread is a good place to talk about Nintendo digital store. Big game releases like Mario Kart or Zelda also tend to have their own threads. There's no hard rule against discussing those games in here, but this is a nice place to talk about smaller titles that would be unable to sustain their own threads, and obviously those larger games can easily crowd everyone else out. Finally, don't be discouraged from making game-specific threads if you feel it warrants attention. This is sort of a catch-all thread.

Free games via Club Nintendo:

Nintendo is now allowing players to buy download games for their Wii, DSi, and 3DS via the Club Nintendo website. All first party games, and some third party titles, offer codes that you can enter on the official Nintendo website. Fill out a survey and earn coins (and an additional follow-up survey for extra coins). The coins can buy a variety of posters, cases, and various neat stuff. But the games are where it's at. Every month, Nintendo is offering up four games to download.

Featured Applications:

Nintendo Video: A free download app that randomly adds short 3D movies to watch. Blue Man Group, College Humor, and Dreamworks have all contributed.
SwapNote: A free download app that allows you to send notes, pics, and sound clips to friends via Street Pass or Spot Pass.
Netflix: Link your account to your 3DS to watch (2d) movies on the small screen.
Hulu Plus: Just like Netflix, link your account to watch TV shows on the go.
3D movie recording: Record up to 10 minutes of 3D footage and upload it to youtube.
Game demos: Download demos of upcoming 3DS releases.
System Transfer: Transfer information from an existing DS, DSi, or 3DS to a 3DS. Great for when the inevitable redesign hits the scene.
A full list of additional built-in software can be found on Nintendo's 3DS site.

Layton is... Layton. It's more of the same, so if you loved the previous games, you'll clearly love this one.

Though I wonder if people are getting bored of it, for no other reason than that nobody anywhere is talking about it. It was like this starting with the 3rd game. Just ignored mostly everywhere. Then again, they keep making more of them, so they're obviously selling.

I think the Vita situation is really sad because they've actually made a really nice piece of hardware this time around with some cool new ideas integrated into it. I think we might just have to wait a few years for it to come into its own.

The only thing that could save the Vita is if for some unfathomable reason COD declassified and Soul Sacrifice sell like gangbusters and get the Japanese and American markets clamoring for the system.

I'm not seeing either of those things happening.

How good the hardware is means practically nothing for portables.

It's all about software and Sony is not capable of sustaining a platform by itself.

NightSky is NintendoLife's second 10/10 eShop game. The other is Zelda DX, so it's the first new game with that rating.

I have the PC version and I played it all the way through and loved it, so I can totally see that. Barring technical issues it should be a 10/10 on 3DS. Tempted to pick it up again for 3D.

By the way, you link to NintendoLife's DSiware rankings in the OP, but not eShop. They are pretty dang spot on most of the time, I would put this up there and pull some of the top games as recommendations.

Notice I filtered it to eShop only, you can filter GBC games, GB games, whatever.

I'm always a game behind in Layton, I just finished Unwound Future and I still haven't 100% it or the previous one or done the download puzzles. I need a good few months before picking up another puzzle heavy game.

Been playing Yoshi's Island, White 2, and Kid Icarus so it will be a while before I get to the recent and upcoming 3DS releases.

I really hope Nintendo integrates the 3DS and Wii U often. I thought the GC>GBA linkup stuff was supercool and considering the popularity of the Wii, the popularity of the DS, and the fact that you don't need a dang cable, I was hoping they would do it a bunch this generation, but nothing really came of it.

We know they're interested, so here's hoping.

    http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/05/nintendo-interested-in-wii-u3ds-connectivity
In an interview with IGN, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto discussed Wii U and 3DS connectivity, saying that the company is thinking about ways to get the best out of both systems - but it doesn't look like it's exactly a top priority at the moment.

Nintendo has a long history of connecting its portable and home console systems, from the Game Boy Player to the N64's Transfer Pak to the myriad ways in which the Gamecube and Game Boy Advance that could be used together to enhance the experience of games like Zelda: Four Swords and Animal Crossing.

"Of course we are thinking of the possibility of connecting Wii U and Nintendo 3DS once again," Miyamoto said. "[But] we have challenged connectivity on many occasions, and one of the great lessons we have learned is the simple fact that those who own both are much fewer than those who don’t own both. So what we decided early on when considering the Wii U design was that we had to make it so that every single purchaser of the Wii U is going to have the same play conditions, the same equipment."

That doesn't mean that Nintendo is discounting the possibility of connecting the 3DS and Wii U in interesting ways, though. "Even between Wii and 3DS, there are some things that can be done by connecting with each other – Mii channel is interchangeable on both systems," Miyamoto reminds us. "There are things that can easily done by transferring data between Wii and DS or 3DS systems.

"If we are going to do that with Wii U and 3DS, there would be three screens to consider. The reason why we were not so eager to do a similar thing between Wii and DS if that it would have become very complicated using two screens on the DS and one screen on the Wii. But of course we are trying to think about a way to expand the experience of 3DS and Wii U when they are connected with each other, one way or the other."

Look out for our full interview with Miyamoto very soon indeed.

Really? I guess I haven't gotten that far through it yet. I've only done maybe a dozen dark notes so far.

A few dark notes have had new songs but a lot are repeats from the series and I just unlocked encore which I assume will get more songs as I get more points

To be fair most of the time I don't notice and I'm too busy having fun, but actually seeing the dlc shop makes me hope Nintendo cards get put on sale someday

The dark notes only use 20 songs total, so you're going to see a lot of repeats. It's by far the weakest part of the game, despite having the most potential.

The real chunk of the game is all in the series modes.

I was waiting until they made a Majora's Mask 3d, but I ended up buying a red XL because I didn't touch my other games (three of them) which I bought with my normal 3DS I traded in.

I don't think there will be a significant drop in cost for the 3DS XL before your game is released, so why not pick it up now?
