"It's fine without a story, so do we really need one?"
    - Kensuke Tanabe, software planning and development department for Paper Mario: Sticker Star on the Nintendo 3DS, recalls how veteran Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto asked for story elements to be left out of the game.

In a new Iwata Asks interview on the Nintendo website, president Satoru Iwata discussed the development of the latest in the Paper Mario series with the team behind it, who in turn revealed why the game was so light on story compared to previous installments.

As it turns out, Miyamoto -- who had a hand in the game's design -- instructed the team to lay off the story elements, as he believed that the gameplay elements were what players really wanted.

"With regard to the story, we did a survey over the Super Paper Mario game in Club Nintendo, and not even 1 percent said the story was interesting," noted Tanabe. "A lot of people said that the 'Flip' move for switching between the 3D and 2D dimensions was fun."

Taro Kudo, the co-director of scenario design on the game, added, "I originally saw it in a way that's similar to Miyamoto-san. Personally I think all we need is to have an objective to win the boss battle at the end of the game."

He continued, "I didn't think we necessarily needed a lengthy story like in an RPG. Instead, we looked at the characteristics of a portable game that can be played little by little in small pieces and packed in lots of little episodes and ideas. I always did like putting in little ideas, so I actually enjoyed it."

Miyamoto, dude, the hilarious dialogue and funnidiculous stories are the reason people come to the Mario RPGs! Bowser's Inside Story wasn't great because it was groundbreaking gameplay-wise - it was great because it was hilarious and awesome at the same time!

Anyway, I actually had come here to ask - Christmas is coming, and with it christmas gift lists. I've been kind of out of the loop about game releases, though. What good stuff has come out in 3DS for us Europeasants in the last couple months?

    Steam ID: Right here.

So I tried. I left early to stop at Best Buy before work today to pick up the 3DS XL bundle with the $20 gift card. Get to Best Buy ready to spend the money. Store has been open for over an hour. Empty space where it should be but there is a tag. I ask a guy, he says they are probably in the back but they can't unbox them until their manager comes in. The website said they were available.

Maybe this is why Best Buy is going under. I want to give you money for the thing, go get the thing or make your website not say you have it!

That's odd, the cage in gaming was full of the Blue XL bundles on Friday, though I'm sure if you tried to buy one it would have rejected the sale. (Unless it wasn't a hard release date.)

I am very depressed now as I was looking forward to picking it up today plus the waste in gas. I'm planning to go to the other store tomorrow.

I assumed that a store wouldn't scan inventory until they were removed from the shipping boxes and ready to be put out on the shelves.

No the reason why best buy is going under is almost entirely on being undercut by the internet. They are huge stores with massive overhead and can't afford to be only making sales on loss leaders while acting primarily as a showroom for Amazon. You'll hear tales of people spending an hour with a TV salesman only to thank them, whip out a smartphone and place an order for the tv they want right in the middle of the store and guess what, they are true.

BB actually saw this coming and tried a bunch of things over the past few years to slow it down but if anything the stagnant economy has forced more fiscal discipline on people who still need the latest and greatest.

    So that Animal Crossing shortage.

    I was reading this:

    http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32665

and wondering. How does this work for the downloadable version of the game? Obviously you can't download a NAND chip. Does the downloadable version somehow emulate the physical version?

Very good point... this concerns me a great deal now. There's no way to emulate something like this unless the write speed of the 3DS game carts is REALLY slow. The digital download version would be writing to SD memory which is generally slow (I think the stock SD cards shipped with the 3DS were class 2). Maybe they will ship with a warning that you need a class 6+ to play the digital version?

Scribblenauts Unlimited is amazing but a little different from past games. There is a story, and an overworld map to navigate. Amazingly fun still though and much improved controls.

I have Scribblenauts on the Wii U and it's my first Scribblenauts. I'm having a hard time getting into it, but I haven't given up yet.

The fun is to be as absurd as possible for the sake of being absurd. For example, I learned that raptors will not eat god. They will eat babies though. Trapping a vampire in amber works well for cloning dinosaurs as well. I have been working on a shark with legs, but no luck yet.

I just realized I need to decide on the game to buy with the 3DS tomorrow. Is it okay to play the Layton games out of order?

I've been playing Scribblenauts with some friends, and there are always people who suggest the most normal and obvious solutions possible. Others like to be ridiculous just to see if it will work. When we try something crazy and the game accepts our answer, it's much more fun.

Probably not for the overarching story. If you're going to start with a Layton game but don't want to play them all I'd start with the last one, The Last Specter (or The Spectre's Call in EU).

After being unable to find the Adventure Time in stores I ordered it from Amazon, like I should've done in the first place.

Except, it ended up coming from a third party store. I still ordered the Enchiridion version for the 3DS.

What came in the mail was the regular DS version.

I decided I'd keep it instead of spending extra money for a scalped version somewhere and it didn't even have a Club Nintendo PIN.

Miyamoto doesn't seem to get why people enjoy games as much any more-- he misunderstands, misreads, or just misses it somehow, it seems. And given he watches people as they play... I don't know.

I mean, he's asking why people would want another F-Zero, as he doesn't think there's anything new to be done with it. Never mind HD, online play, and other possibilities...

I thought he was supposed to be semi-retiring to work on his own smaller projects, anyway.

Now that the XL is out (and there's more games) I'm finally ready to get a 3DS. But I want a special edition one since I already waited so long. The Pikachu edition is out in the UK soon, but I think I'd rather import a US 3DS cause the exchange rate will make it and all it's games cheaper. And it will probably be ages before there's another special edition released in NA.

Maybe they're using the system memory somehow as a temporary write location while it waits for the SD card to finish writing?

The game carts are probably really slow to write to, as usually you only save to it rarely compared to how much you read from it. So they probably have really good read speeds, but poor write speeds.

I'd guess not, but I'll bet that she can send the Wii stuff (and/or maybe the DS stuff) to the 3DS (unless someone has verified otherwise).

If you earn 300 coins in the Club year (July 1 - June 30) you earn a gold prize for free. If you earn 600 coins in that time period, you earn a platinum prize for free. Additionally, you can spend the coins you earn (does not reduce the coins earned towards gold/platinum) on prizes of your choice, for the cost listed in the Club store. Shipping is even free! You can keep coins for up to 2 Club years after the year you earned them. So if you earned the coins December 2012, they would not expire until June 30, 2015.

They will offer pre-purchase interest in a game occasionally which allows you to fill out a survey and when you buy and register the game you will get 10 additional coins. They also offer 10 additional coins if you buy the game within 4 weeks of release.

Yes, every SDHC card is supported, and given you format the card for FAT32, you could theoretically use some of the more spacious SDXC cards as well - 128 GB isn't outside your reach, but we don't really know yet how well the really big cards fare. As in, formatting them for FAT32 and plugging them in is something of a case of round peg, square hole. It fits and can be used, but the machine was in all likeliness not designed at all with this eventuality in mind.
