name that old video game!

My memories of this are pretty vague so I dunno if anyone can help me but I'm hopeful! I'm 90% sure it was an SNES game. I played it somewhere between 1997-1999, on vacation in France so it was definitely translated into French if not just a French game (edit: I don't think it was a solely French game because I remember it seeming pretty Japanese). I am pretty sure it was a female main character and that she had some sort of animal buddy, and it was a two player game. I believe gameplay was the characters running towards the top of the screen and fighting stuff, but I can't remember if it was forced scrolling or not. I don't think it was. If I remember anything else I'll come back and add it, thanks guys!

    That has to be Pocky and Rocky, right? Probably the original SNES one as seen on this page about the series.

    No problem! It's nice to put my unholy knowledge of SNES games, especially two-player ones, to good use for once (granted, Pocky and Rocky is relatively well-known as far as two-player goes though). =P People tend to ask about PC games a lot, and those aren't my forte.

    Yeah I played it years ago when I was a kid and every once in a while since then I have wondered about it but this time I realized I knew somewhere where someone might actually know. I never had an SNES and the fact that there was a language barrier did not help with my recollection at all.
