    Yeah, deciding if a 16 year old is old enough to consent to sex doesn't really apply since it is against the law regardless. Should it be against the law? I'm not qualified to comment on that.

    Age of consent laws are more to remind the adults well beyond their teenage years that perhaps they should think twice, thrice, or keep thinking until it becomes a bad idea to have sex with underage people due to the differing levels of maturity and expectations of life after they put their ding-dong in the squish mitten.

    It doesn't really work if the end result is teenagers still have sex with older adults and the public goes ape shit every time someone on the cusp of consent has sex with an older adult. It needlessly titillates the public too. Look at that headline. Underage boy?

    There's a lot that two years of being a teenager can do to better prepare someone to avoid an exploitative relationship, though. Just being a legal adult cuts the vast majority of leverage someone can hold over your head to make you keep fucking them.

    No one is arguing that the age set in consent laws seems arbitrary, but again those laws are more to stop people far beyond those ages from plowing young strange who may or may not be mature enough to handle all of the other, more complex adult emotions and situations that come about after swapping DNA. So if the law in Arkansas says 15 is the age of consent and the law in California says 17, it really doesn't matter because it's more aimed at the 45 year old music teacher as a warning that he should think twice before having some Junior blow on his trumpet.

    Although I must add that the laws in Europe seem to be a bit more flexible than those in the US. In Austria, for example, the age of consent is set at 14, but sexual relations may be punished up to age 16 if a court decides that the younger party wasn't yet mature enough to "realize the significance of the act" and the older party exploited their "age-related superiority".
