Fernando and his science team gets to work. We queue up Survival Methods, Military Training and Medicine at the research lab. Jackie gets to work in the workshop - I queue up five Scientific Lasers and 10 battery packs for them. Time to review the combat squad.
Ute Heinemann: A veteran from the mutant wars. Don't let her granny looks fool you, she has a FN2000 assault rifle and is by far the colonist with the most combat experience.
I yoink Benat from the technical bay - he has some military experience, and we will need a technician on missions.

Fernando Ramirez, research director: Our archaeologists have been attacked by some mechanical drones on the excavation site at Cydonia. Seems like the ancient Martians have not left their dwellings unprotected.
Willhelm Schrooten, Commander-in-Chief: We will have to learn how to use weapons and a few of us will have to become soldiers, so that we can accompany the scientists. Fortunately, the Reticulans gave us their laser weapons. Unfortunately, the batteries for them are scarce as hell. Can we produce some more?
Jacqueline Wells, production manager: I am afraid we are not familiar with this technology.
Fernando: In that case, we can postpone our research of Mars terraformation and concentrate on laser technologies. On the other hand, it might be easier to browse the database brought from Earth and start production of projectile firearms.
Willhelm: Some of the oldest settlers still keep their guns from the mutant wars on Earth. They will surely lend them to our scientists for study.
Jackie: As soon as we get the blueprints, we'll create a production line and start weapons production.

Technical bay: these guys will spend a lot of time driving around Mars, so I let Edgar start training Minor driving to get the team to the destination faster. The remaining three people will do fine for now.
Scientific bay: these guys also drive around, but noone on that team has any interesting training available right now.
Workshop: these guys will stay home most of the time and build stuff. Benat will be here when he's not out shooting stuff. Mary gets Minor civil engineering training, which will take a day and a half.
First order of the day: acquire resources. Aram to the southeast of Home Base has a fuel mine, so I send the science team there to build a geological probe. After that I queue up probes in Crisis (metal mine) and Fountain of Youth (chemical mine), Timeland (fuel mine) and Ortygia (chemical mine). When the probes are built the technical team will drive out to build the actual mines.
Baltus to the north has a fuel mine, but the area is held by hostiles. We send the squad out on their first mission!
Fernandez' team gets done with their research on Survival Methods. This will open new venues of research on space suits and related technologies.
We receive the following items from the Reticulans:
1 Reticulan Rocket Launcher
5 Reticulan rockets
1 Reticulan laser rifle
10 Reticulan batteries
I send Jackie off for Minor civil engineering training as well. It will improve building speed for base structures.
The geosonde at Aram discovers new territory: Pyrrhas Plain. The geosonde in Crisis is done; I queue up a metal mine there.
We now have enough fuel to send the UFO on a mission! I choose the mission in Baltus, north of Home Base. 'Ere we go!
Terrain: Open, low cover

Objectives: Search and destroy
We disembark from the UFO and scout the immediate area. A canyon with an overhang, but not much to hide behind. We head for the overhang to have a look at more of the area and possibly get the advantage of height.
Turns out the enemy had the same idea! On the overhang we encounter a couple of crawling insect-like drones with four legs and a weapon on their back. Firefight ensues. They go down pretty easily -- and then we use our elevated position to our advantage to snipe more drones below us.
After mopping up a few more of the drones we head back, and Military Training is done at the science lab. The pencilnecks move on to Medicine, and I queue up Combat Detection Devices, Automatic Defense System and Combat Explosives.
Thanks to earlier research I can now build Mars Simulation at the base -- this will allow us to further experiment with environments to improve space suits.
We build a probe in Fountain of Youth and conquer the territory. I add a chemical mine there to the build queue. Mary Osakwe finishes Minor civil engineering training and puts it to use at once by helping to build the Mars Simulation. Benat gets sent to train Minor suit handling, enabling him to repair them in the field.

As soon as we have some more raw materials we can build the Communication satellite and Tactical training areas at Home Base. I rearrange the orders for the science and tech teams so we can aquire the needed resources ASAP.
Two Reticulans join our cause! They're named Tabatch'kvlam and Oghla'k'nkmant. We call them Tabbie and Oghie. Tabbie is a level 2 soldier, Oghie is a level 1/1 soldier/scientist.
