Is there not a little pin hole you stick a paper clip into to manually eject discs? You guys keep talking about how you can't get a disc out when you send them in, and I've never heard of a drive on any device without something like that. Seems like a weird thing to not include.

I really hope they bring it over, but Dragon Quest sales have always seemed a bit more marginal outside of Japan in comparison to titles like Final Fantasy, and the localization and server costs for an MMO from a series that has never been the biggest hit outside of Japan might be leaving Squeenix a bit iffy, especially after the disastrous launch of FFXIV. I really really hope we get it, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if we didn't.

They've been good at bringing all the other DQ games so far, though we still need the Dragon Quest Monster remake on 3DS first.

True, but again, the others haven't been MMOs. There are a lot more costs associated with those, both for the company and players, that might cause a roadblock that hasn't been there with past games.

Speaking of Dragon Quest...I might be convinced to do unspeakable things for a DQ8 re-release on WiiWare. Doesn't even have to be an HD remake, just a simple upscale with some anti-aliasing would do it for me.

Yep there's not one. Eject function only.
I've never heard of one of those holes on a slot-feeder. There's no mechanical tray to eject, so you'd need some kind of arm that pushes the disk out. And considering that it likely locks the disk in place when it's fully inserted, that would be especially hard.
You can move game save data to an SD card, right? It may be wise to just quit relying on the internal memory in the event of a bricking.

I didn't think the Wii U side read the SD card. However, saves are tied to the Mii / NNID, and at the moment I don't think there is a mechanism to move Miis. It's one of the bigger complaints about the proto-OS we have at the moment.
Well apparently my Wii U is semi-useless since every time I try to download a game update or something from the eShop it throws up an error that Nintendo couldn't tell me anything about when I called them. They promised to call me back when they knew more.
I started the update an hour or so ago, and a little way in there was a server hiccup. So I quit out, played games for a while. I didn't realise that the download would continue in the background! Installing now, hope nothing goes wrong....
This is why all the griping is silly. All the updates can be run in the background ...including the initial one. You can play games the entire time.
My bricked WiiU disagrees!
And this WiiU Panorama thing... I uh.. does anyone here think it could be worth spending money on? I mean I have zero interest in it, but is there someone here who thinks to themselves "That looks cool I would buy that?"
I know. You seem to be the exception to the rule.
I'm sorry. Those issues you are having suck hardcore.
Hmm according to the internet the issue I have is happening to everyone who was shipped a new console by Nintendo. At least, everyone who's reported it has one.
Oi I'm at the end of my rope. I could forgive a simple hardware defect before but this is too much...
Edit: Also an unpatched AC3 hardlocked the console right after the "intro".
I feel like I need more local multiplayer games. I heard Sonic Racing isn't actually a good party game because it's more of a "serious" racer? And I dunno if my friends would really adjust to Blops 2 on the Wiimote, plus it has the disadvantage of being a physical disk.
Already have Trine 2 (too hard for some friends), Mario, Nintendoland, and ZombiU.
I suspect the console is never really turned "Off" per se, it's just in standby mode, like most consumer electronics devices these days.
Does it work even when your console is literally not plugged in?
I really loathe that. We're supposed to start being energy conscious, but everyone removes the 'off' button from all new devices instead.
It also annoys me that when the Wii U freezes, holding the power button won't actually turn it off because there is no 'off' mode, so you need to pull the plug.

The TV remote is all gamepad side. The only thing it needs from the console are the IR codes, and it only needs those once. Then it literally is just a universal remote with a touch screen instead of regular buttons. Blinks a little IR light at the top of the gamepad per the code for your TV/cable-box.
Ah, I see, I suppose TV remote functionality is of such a base and simple nature that it doesn't really require much guidance from the sophisticated silicon that's in the box.

I remember WiiConnect24 from way back in the day. Since I lived in the sticks I never had a wireless signal for it to snap up I and thus never had any problems with it, but my friend who moved into an apartment complex with surprisingly decent Wi-Fi got the jitters from his Wii blinking yellow at night and growing alarmingly hot. He didn't understand what it was at all, but since I knew how WiiConnect24 worked and remembered well the stories I'd read of people managing to brick their console (by overheating when it was turned off) disabled it for him. He was pretty grateful for that, but up to that point he'd just unplugged everything when he stopped playing.
A habit I've taken up since, because I can't keep my Wii plugged in when I want to read in my bed, the extension cord can't reach both the Wii and the lamp by my bed. Planet loves me for it I'm sure.
I think it'd be kinda neat if you could get a killswitch on electronics devices these days, for whenever you really don't want to put something in the industry standard "Low Level Standby Mode".
Alright and in this next scene all the animals have AIDS.
I got a little excited when I saw your ship.

Just an aside, but holding down the power button on the Wii would turn off the WiiConnect 24 functionality. The red light meant it was truly off.
The Wii U doesn't have a yellow light, and doesn't seem to have any sign of WiiConnect 24 like functionality as far as I've seen.
I hope Wii U doesn't have any kind of stand-by, low power mode. I still blame WiiConnect 24 for all the problems I had with Wii. I had to send my system back seven damn times. Seven! You'd think it was an Xbox 360.
my whole entertainment center goes into one power strip that I turn off when not in use. Yes I make sure all consoles are off before flipping that switch.
I'm an asshole to the environment and leave my computer running 24/7. All of my entertainment center is plugged in all the time, and sometimes, if I'm not near a convenient checkpoint, I'll just pause and leave it running, and come back to it the next day.
[edit]
I also leave lights on in rooms I am not currently in, or when I leave the house.

Eh. Sleep modes on computers and (most) game consoles are so good that I could leave all the computers/consoles in my house on in sleep mode and they'd collectively use less power than a small reading lamp. Doesn't really concern me.

Well, I guess if my Wii U internet stability isn't fixed by the spring I'll pick up a Wired Adapter and bridge the Wi-Fi from my iMac.
Cheaper than a new router anyway. I'd prefer the new router though, actually, considering the age of mine, but there's no guarantee that would fix my problem.

So I finally popped in and played Sonic Racing. I was pretty blown away by how fun it is.
I am a bit bummed that a racing themed game that cross promotes Wreck It Ralph didn't have Vanellope Von Schweet or King Candy playable and only Ralph.

Not true. Wii U's Mii Maker uses the SD card.
To be honest, I copied my Mii from my 3DS so I haven't even touched the Wii U Mii Maker. I ment in regards to things like saves and game data.

Actually, if the Mii Maker lets you move favored Miis to your SD card.. this may be the beginnings of a save transfer system..
I believe so, but you can't transfer it from machine to machine, which is why the Giant Bomb peeps pretty much turned against Nintendo on day 2.
Guess I'm buying a new router just because one fucking piece of equipment in the entire house is being a bitch.
