So, I have a bona-fide, verified Google Apps for Education account, and a small problem involving scheduling of classes, and a bunch of resources (i.e classrooms). I did research before I started this little escapade, but I have to admit that I am thus far defeated. Does anyone have experience of using Google Calendar for their school class scheduling? I want to know if this application is suitable for what I have in mind... I
thought it would be, but the solution thus far eludes me...
I have 5 rooms, a regular class schedule, a private class schedule, and a bunch of teachers. What I wanted to do was use Google Calendar to set up a calendar for each classroom, and then assign the classes and teachers to each classroom calendar (so - basically treat each class as an event, add the classroom as a resource, and invite each teacher to the class via their email addresses) - the idea being that at the end of it, I have 5 'resource' calendars, populated with the classes that will happen there, and a bunch of teachers whose calendars show which classes they are teaching and when. The idea is then that I can use the Appointment Slots feature to automatically make slots available for booking, when teachers are NOT teaching regular classes.
Google's documentation makes this
seem as if it's in easy reach, but I can't seem to get it configured correctly to either (a) show automatically accepted events in teacher calendars, or (b) warn me about scheduling conflicts between rooms and conflicts between teachers (i.e. if I book the same teacher in adjacent rooms at the same time, I get no warning and Google Calendar allows it)
Anyone got any relevant experience here? Is what I want to do even feasible with this tool? It seems from my research that a lot of people use this calendar, so I thought it was worth a shot to ask in the forum...
PS - I might add that this is not for profit - it's not my work. I am just noodling around with the system in my spare time to see if I can help a friend with some terrible excel based scheduling nonsense that they have to deal with on a daily basis.
