Recovering dead PS3 data

Recently I decided to take advantage of the $199 250GB PS3 deal for Black Friday since I've had my "fatty" PS3 for about 5 years now. Well I get the new system, plug an ethernet cable from one system to the other, and tell both of them to send/receive data. I change the input on the TV and watch some shows while waiting. I switch over to the PS3s at commercial to check the progress, and both systems say that there is no ethernet cable connected. I turn both of them off, then back on. Upon turning on "fatty-worthless", it beeps, gives me the yellow light of death, and shuts off. How perfect is this? The DAY that I decide to transfer all of my info over, my original PS3 DIES. Is there any way for me to recover my savegames/data from the now dead PS3?

tl;dr Tried transferring data from old PS3 to the new slim. Old PS3 dies. How do I get the data now?

    Though luck.

I can think of three ways that might work but I have not actually tested them so I suggest talking to Playstation support before actually doing anything. Also all three methods are depending on the drive in the dead PS3 being okay.

    A. Take the drive from you old PS3 and put it in the new one. I expect you can then run the new machine with the old drive and then you'll need a USB drive or a USB stick to backup the data on after which you can then put in the original new drive in the new PS3 and load the old data from the USB drive.

    B. Borrow or buy an old PS3. Put your drive in it and then do the transfer all over (I recommend doing a backup to an USB drive first).

    C. Repair the old PS3 either DIY style or take the drive out and take the machine to the shop.

PS. Your bad luck reminded me it's high time I do a backup of my consoles.

    Bones heal, glory is forever.

DO NOT DO OPTIONS A or B.

The data on the hard drive is tied to the device itself. Even if you pull the HD out and put it into another of the same model, the first thing that happens is the playstation asks to format the drive. The HD is tied to that EXACT Playstation.

Your only real option is to repair it. Just going through this with mine, here are your options.

    1) you can pay someone local to fix it (invalidates your warranty so I think this is a last resort). But you can keep your HD and probably get it saved.
    2) Pay to have it shipped to Sony. They will try to fix it if they can, if they can't, they'll ship you back a "similar" type model. Probably another refurb. NOTE: Even if they fix it, there is no guarantee your data will be saved. Around $70-80 I think
    3) Because you are an existing user (assuming US) they'll sell you a slim 160GB for about $130 I think. I was mad because this is only available to the US only.
