I love the writing in this game. Especially the FC3 reference in the shotgun's description. You don't need to be a douchey twentysomething trying to save his groady friends to use a shotgun!

    Ugh

They used their previous poorly-written game to write self-deprecating "humor" in a poorly-written manner in their new game

    This is some Inception-type shit

Except all the dream layers are awful

    Naw. UV's alright.

    His opinions are... unique.

    Oh. Oooooohhhhh.

You thought we meant "miserable" as in "pathetic". No no no, we just meant that we need to cheer him up!

...we're gonna need an 80's style "Cheer Up Montage".

Want to like this game but it's laggy and slow on my PC. Steam forums are full of similar complaints but fewer solutions. Maybe I'll mess with it this weekend some, but fixing games into a playable state on my free time isn't something I usually do a lot of.

Honestly, Unbreakable, your posts for this game seem like they're little more than raw, seething pretentiousness. I mean, the fact that you didn't like the story from the first game is totally fine; I am in no way going to argue it was something greater than it was, and I could totally, totally understand people not liking it at all. Even hating it wouldn't be something I would consider remotely inconcievable.

But bitching about shitty writing in the first game, and then bitching about it in the DLC pack, which is clearly just a massive and frequently-satirical nostalgia romp, for taking pokes at the writing for FC3? There clearly is just no pleasing you at all, because you tear one project up because you don't like the writing, then you tear the next project up, which makes NO PRETENSES WHATSOEVER about being something less-than-serious in any of the promotional material for it, for making fun of that same writing.

It's pretty obvious you plain just want to hate the game. And hating it would be A-OK, except the hate you've got for it means you're taking this all just way, way too damn seriously for a $15 add-on. If you can't even relax enough to see why it's just a fun ride, I can't even consider that a shortcoming of the game. In FC3? Maybe. In Blood Dragon? Hell, even the name should've pretty obviously said what the entire attitude of the game is.

Plus, you should've been able to tell you would hate this thing within literally seconds of viewing the advertising material, so why did you even get it if it was so obvious it wouldn't hold up to your zany standards? It seems to me you bought nothing more than 15 dollars of grief, for no reason. Is there anything at all you like from these games beyond the third-rate crafting system from FC3? Because you're being one helluva Negative Nancy over all of this, way beyond a "it's not for me" manner.

From what UV is saying, and from what the trailers showed, it looked like it was going to be done like The FP or Hobo With A Shotgun - straight fucking forward, no winking, no looking back. Instead, it's in your face CONSTANTLY about how wink wink it is, look at this reference! I made a shitty tutorial and then made a JOKE about the shitty tutorial, NERD! Those things are different. I, for one, wanted unblinking earnestness which is, in itself, hilarious.

I watched the Giant Bomb quick look and decided that I didn't need super shitty self-referential MIXED with earnestness. I, and it seems UV as well, do not feel that those are two flavors that mix well. I believe the creators saw that as being able to do fun 80's shit (and don't get me wrong: the look, the sounds, the guns, the gameplay, all look great and I quite enjoyed playing FC3 as well) and then be able to nudge you in the ribs and say, "Yeah, but this shit is lame, right? I know, I like it ironically." Whether or not that was their intention, to me, that's what it feels like, and I don't find it funny.

If they had left out lame jokes like the mentioned ones and just gunned ahead and stood tall, it would've been amazing, I think. Hobo and The FP would crash utterly to the ground if they ever insinuated that they were in on the joke. They never do, and therefor, the movies work. Blood Dragon never ceases to let you know it knows what's happening is dumb and I see that as a failure.

And to be honest, that's totally fine. If you don't like the game and it's approach, that's A-OK. I disagree completely and find it a little sad that people can get so wound up about what they think a game should be instead of having a blast with what it is, but that's all opinion stuff. But you can't bitch about how stupid the story of Far Cry 3 because it was shitty for a serious story, then turn around and bitch at game that's never, ever portrayed itself as anything but a total joke shitstorm for making fun of Far Cry 3 as part of a completely non-serious story.

I'm super-glad they didn't even attempt real earnestness, because I'm fucking sick to death of over-dramatic, gritty stories, even ones with some joking thrown in. Blood Dragon is The Eighties: neon, bad fashion, synth music, macho man-heroes, and all of it thrown together with a cocaine-fueled attitude of "fuck reality, that shit is boring, so here, have a blast!", then feathered back for added style.

The one thing I think you're flat wrong on is that the trailers ever showed anything but a complete balls-to-the-wall self-referencing romp. Shit, the intro is an 80s-style animated sequence which has the line "the apocalypse has had an apocalypse". Blood Dragon is exactly what was shown on the box from the very start.

I think a lot of people had a really bad taste left in their mouth from Duke Nukem Forever and it's contaminating their perception of other games

Well, really, Duke Nukem took all the bad things about old games and movies and made them into a game.

While Blood Dragon takes the totally awesome stuff and dumps it into a good game.

DNF was also not that bad. I honestly dont know what people were expecting out of it...

At any rate, besides both games being FPS's, there's really no similarities.

Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
  • PaladinPaladin Registered User regular
DNF was pretty fourth wall, which I thought was kind of a plus or at least neutral, and otherwise was a game set 10 years in the past when game designers couldn't think of anything more exciting for you to do in an FPS than shoot people and drive cars with horrible controls. Therefore, pavlovian association occurs and laying it on a bit too thick is ruined for everyone.

Marty: The future, it's where you're going?

The 80's was the BEST decade. Say what you will about the excess, the "Me Generation" thinking, all that; things were a hell of a lot more simple back then because we were having so much fun. Come to think about it, the theme in most media during the time was either partying and enjoying yourself, or beating the crap out of bad guys who were threatening freedom. Ronald Reagan vs. the Berlin Wall. G.I. Joe vs. Cobra. Autobots vs. Decepticons. Patrick Swayze vs. Those Damn Commie Bastards in Red Dawn.

Now those were the days. Blood Dragon captures that kind of spirit perfectly.

Okay, rant over. Continue discussing the game.

  • Professor PhobosProfessor Phobos Registered User regular
The 80s was climactic showdowns and flashy heroes. The 90s was paranoia and "enemy within" stuff; heroes who had to go through revelations to progress. The 00s was hard decisions and sacrifice.

Generalizing, of course, but those were the zeitgeists. The truly good stuff from any era stands by itself and doesn't fit easily into categories. But there's a whole lot of 80s that isn't, strictly speaking, very good, but a hell of a lot of fun, and Blood Dragon hits that sweet spot pretty well.

I kind of wish they wouldn't wink and elbow me "Get the joke? Joke! I AM MAKING A JOKE NOW WE ARE IN ON THIS JOKE HAH HAH" so much, but it's a nitpick.

the duke nukem parts were fine, but the game part was pretty awful. whenever they got around to some shooty bits that was pretty alright even, but there was so fucking much total bullshit around it. driving levels, platforming levels, etc etc etc and on and on.

blood dragon did remind me of duke nukem though. the one liners and the overall tone i guess.

Still think the writing and voice acting's pretty bad, but what are you gonna do

Also the guns seem to lack any real impact

On the plus side, this runs better on consoles (360, anyways) than Far Cry 3 did

See, that's a good video because I was just coming here to post about how totally awesome the fire shotgun is. Fire + quad barrel + semi-auto + shotgun = everything burns and dies. Except blood dragons, which are attracted by fire.

Oh, and the shells explode, too, so it's like shooting a quad-barreled fire short-range grenade launcher. Sure, you set yourself on fire a lot, but some things are worth it.

Shotgun, sniper rifle, and bow all still pack a wallop at the start. Plus, the bow is cost-effective and silent.

Also, for anybody trying to kill 12 of 12 animals, you have to keep liberating garrisons until you get the one that gives you a mission to kill turtles. Turtles don't spawn in the wild, to my knowledge.

Open all the chest you find. Aside from that, lots of stabbing bad guy, assuming they're still around. By the end of the game, takedowns should automatically loot enemies, making takedowns much faster for getting money then killing and pilfering.
