I am getting real skeptical that Danny played this game all that much as a child. Now, I played it as a kid too, but it was always rentals so my time was limited. I still remember incredibly basic stuff in the beginning though.
I feel the same considering how much Danny claims Secret of Mana was "huge" in his house, but then they miss little things like what they should've done in Pandora since it's such an important thing
to recruit the Girl in your party.
Or even basic stuff like equipping gear, or switching weapons and charging up.
I knew the sprite was supposed to come last. At first I thought I was just crazy.
to be fair the game tells you to get the sprite first technically, the in game dialog they saw gave them no clue they could/should do anything in pandora and get the girl before gaia's navel
and there's nothing in game that tells you about charge attacks either, afaik
so i haven't played the doctor who game, and it may very well be terrible; but good lord they're fucking inept. Games with even the mildest puzzle elements totally confound them.

Probably because they might involve reading. Arin doesn't do any of that. Danny/Ross did okay in Space Quest, if memory serves.

It's not even the parts that require reading. I think it's clear that Arin (and probably Ross) are just completely unable to actually learn anything new. They can play something they already know (like, say, Mario), but throw anything that is even the slightest bit out of their comfort zone and they just become bumbling idiots. That puzzle Arin got stuck on was unbelievably simple (as in, it took me maybe five seconds to understand what the rules and goal were, which Arin literally could not figure out in six minutes and with a tutorial), and Ross was stuck trying to do something the game clearly wasn't allowing but thinking "oh maybe it just requires some half-second bullshit to accomplish!" At least he figured out there was a ladder to climb after however long it took him... until he fucking went back.
I suppose there's irony in a guy that is literally unable to learn anything new making a video about how video games teach mechanics? That's pretty funny. Regardless, they really need to stick to games that they already know.
For a second, I had forgotten when the Sprite and Girl learn magic, but then I remembered. I also forgot when they get the Whip, but that's all coming back now.
They're seriously bad at this. The Girl won't survive the fighting. They haven't bought her ANY gear.
they also mentioned the played until 4 am at that point, I can't blame them entirely for forgetting characters need gear
Yeah, there is that. I'm just concerned they're not going to figure out the action grid and the girl will always be entirely useless. but they do tend to figure a few things out between sessions, so maybe (hopefully) when the record the next set they'll have read a few things about the systems.

Also re: they bleed pixels, the tutorials were a bit much, but I'm not sure how much right they have to really bitch about it the day after posting the Dr Who vid where neither of them could figure a fucking thing out with repeated prompts and tutorials.

To be fair to the Doctor Who thing, they were using controllers and the tutorials and prompts didn't change to reflect that. However, they were still monumentally stubborn and stupid about the game, and seemed to actively ignore onscreen hints and text for no reason and get upset at the game for not anticipating that they wouldn't actually read anything or, you know, TRY.
I really don't want to come off as a fanboy, but man. Like, it'd be one thing, if neither of them have EVER played it before. Or known that the game was this big epic thing that there's a reason it's considered a classic and sometimes can be found in Used Game shops priced at $100 with box and instruction manual.
But this is a game which has been around for more than 20 years, and they've both played it before. They got the whip, which playes "Really Important Item" music and couldn't figure out where to go with it. They took the long way out of the Forest. Then they miss the Cannon Travel at the end and are going to take the long way around. It makes me weep on the inside knowing what they're missing.
I know that half of the fun behind LPs is watching what the player(s) will do next. I wouldn't give them half as much flak if it was an obscure title and they'd never heard of a game before, let alone played it once a long, long time ago.
Yeah he says the dumbest shit. He cites World replacing the leaf with the feather as a good example of changing things up, despite the tanooki suit and cape giving you basically the same abilities. But then ignores stuff like the spring, bee, cloud, ice, glide, Mega mushroom, boomerang, cat, various box heads etc.
I do think he has a point about the rarity of power ups though, these days they do tend to designate a level as using a power and just keep giving it to you.

Arin acts like there were no new powerups in any of the recent Mario titles.
I'm pretty sure there was at least one new powerup in each of the NSMB titles, if not two or more in some cases.
Not only have they had new ones, I don't think he's right on the "this is the <powerup> level" thing. I mean, sure, each level tends to have things be the common powerup, but in most of the NSMB games lots of levels have secrets that you can only get if you figure out how to do things with other powerups. Like one level might hand you the fire flower, but if you have the mini mushroom there'll be stuff you otherwise couldn't get.

Yeah, remember when Jon would have differing opinions and would make the show more interesting by arguing them with Arin? I think he even called Arin out once on hating modern games because they're modern.
This is what I was worried about with Danny from the get-go. Not that he's not funny, but he's too passive around Arin.
I don't think Jon called Arin out enough either. Infact I recall Danny did it once early on, and a few of us lovelies were hopeful this was an indication of the future.
Fortunately, Danny is fantastic in every other conceivable way. Double so for hair.

Which is pretty ironic, considering Arin's spiel about the charge beam in MMX.

He didn't go for the Flute.
He didn't go for the Flute!
You have no idea how much this upsets me.
I got a little excited when I saw your ship.
Weird, I am watching them play but I am not getting frustrated.

I don't want them to be tempted to world skip.
I want them to go through every world and experience all of the pure rage that some of those middle worlds bring.

Mainly because the game deserves to be played well :P
They're so bad.
Also re: latest SoM vid; I think they would have found a neko if they had just kept going a bit. It's been awhile though.

No, not that flute, the other flute!
I'm not upset that they didn't use it, I'm upset that they didn't get it!
I got a little excited when I saw your ship.
His reasoning for getting the first one according to what he said is that everyone knows that one exists anyway so he may as well.
I'm betting he's going to skip the third one as well.
What are they going to play for the Fred Savage Guest Grumps?

Arins opinions on Mario games are fucking terrible. The fire flower didn't work in Galaxy? Galaxy was stale?
