It speaks volumes about the Dota-style games when you need a team 30 to make your playerbase stop being assholes. It says even more about human nature when being trapped in a virtual room with 9 other assholes is one of the most popular genres in the industry.
I like watching the Dota 2 tourneys, but have no interest in playing the game. It's just like watching a sporting event with two pro teams going at it and I love the coordination of the attacks. Pub games are just like going to a local gym and getting into a pickup game, always some ball hog asshole who thinks he's better than everyone else and lots of finger pointing when you lose.

Sure it does, just like with any pro sports team, but what I'm getting at is a team of players who regularly play together is what I would rather watch then experience it first-hand with the randomness of pub games.
Halo 4 at #2 is still pretty good for a single console game.
CoD being #3 on WiiU but having so few concurrent multiplayers is weird, and perhaps a bit ominous.
Historically, how many sales equals how many concurrent users in the first week or two? For example, does the game sell 1,000,000 on a platform and you see 100,000 concurrent? What's typical?
The #1 Wii U game was 243k, CoD could be half that or even less. It's still a very small userbase overall, and also quite a few copies might be saved for Christmas presents.

Thus sayeth the Pachter:
Wii U software sales "[were] abysmal, only Super Mario sold any meaningful units."
There really was no reason to buy the stand-alone Vita version when you could get the PS3 one and a free copy of the Vita version at the same time. Still, it should've sold better. It's a damn fun game.
Yeah, unless you need the physical card it would be way better to just buy the PS3 version, get the Vita version, and then offload the PS3 version used on Craigslist and make a few bucks.

It's a Nintendo launch. And a 2:1 attach rate on a system that has about 500k units sold. I.. think that's pretty good, right?
It's ok! Cross-buy! Everyone of those PS3 sales can also count as a Vita sale.
Doom averted!
The doom about Playstation All-Stars isn't how badly the Vita version did (since the PS3 version was a much better deal), it's that the PS3 version did so poorly. Sony was arguably counting on it to be their big blockbuster game of the season and it didn't even sell 100k.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (Xbox 360 & PS3 Only) - 7.4 Million - (On the same platforms MW3 was 8.8M, BLOPS1 was 8.0M, and MW2 was 6.1M. It had one less tracking week than either of those.)

Kinda shocking how far their finger seemed to be off the pulse. There didn't seem to be all that much excitement about the game really ever.
I didn't think it would be a smashing success, but I was thinking that 100k+ would be a low-end estimate.
That they're giving away the Vita version with the PS3 purchase is really, really damaging actual sales of the Vita version. I'm all for Sony giving away portable copies of their console games, I'm not one to complain about getting two games for the price of one... But I have to wonder if this isn't just another data point for third parties to look at when considering whether to develop Vita projects.

Last I checked, Nintendo has been going 3rd party for the last 3 generations.
Question is, have pc gaming been dead longer than Nintendo was going third party?
MMmmmm....that's a good question. In fact, I think Nintendo should just go third party on PC's only. Get into an Apple mode where they release a new console every year, each marginally more powerful than the next.

They have made a habit of introducing minimized as well as maximized designs for the handhelds lately, so I'm just kind of waiting for the moment they decide it's time to fill the "Small" hole in their design lineup.

Gamers will not be able to take to the skies of Columbia as early as they may have hoped. BioShock Infinite has been delayed for a second time, with Irrational Games' new action-shooter now due March 26, 2013. The game was previously planned to ship February 26.
The decision to delay BioShock Infinite again came after former Epic Games producer Rod Fergusson joined the developer in August. He suggested to staff that the game could benefit from 3-4 additional weeks of polish. In the long run, the delay would benefit the game, he said.
BioShock Infinite was announced in August 2010 with a 2012 release window attached. In March 2012, an October 16, 2012 release date for the game was chosen. However, the game would later be delayed to February 26, 2013 and was not on display at the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo in June.
When BioShock Infinite does ship, it will do so with great sales expectations. One analyst has suggested the game would be a significant financial boon for publisher Take- Two, saying it could ship 4.9 million copies.

I get the joke but this is rather disingenuous. As soon as you split things up by hardware generation (and thus format of cartridge) it gets less crazy.

In a surprising move, EA / Bioware is relaxing some of their dumb shit with TOR.
When Game Update 1.5 hit Public Test Server (PTS), we listened to your concerns and we increased Quickbars from one to two for Free-to-Play Players, increased Warzones from three to five per week, and reduced the temporary bind on Cartel Market items.
We want you to know that this is an ongoing dialogue. Recently, we’ve seen your feedback on some of the other aspects of our Free-to-Play option and once again, we are working to improve the experience for all of our players.
Starting today, Preferred Status Players will see an increase to their default Quickbars from two (2) to four (4). If you’ve already purchased additional Quickbars, don’t worry: we will be refunding your Cartel Coins for any Quickbar-related purchase.
Additionally, in an upcoming patch (no exact date yet, but players won’t have to wait long), Preferred Status Players will be given four (4) additional character slots, which means that they will have a total of six character slots. As always, Free-to-Play Players can reach Preferred Status simply by purchasing anything from our online store or purchasing a physical copy of the game.
Last but not least, I wanted to share the news that the 50 character limit on Global Active Characters for Subscribers will be removed and increased substantially in the same, aforementioned patch. If you wanted to, you can truly create your own army of Troopers or a legion of Sith Warriors.
Reaching "preferred" status is as easy as buying the cheapest thing. The bars still being limited to 2 on free accounts is dubious as shit, but now it's something handed out on any purchase.
Still waiting for them to bow to the helmet display thing.
"If other developers get this treatment, that store is going to look mighty bleak for a long time to come"
Paul Johnson, of UK developer Rubicon, has slammed the Windows RT marketplace after a port of his well received game Great Big War Game made just £52 from the platform in its first week on sale.
Johnson estimates the port to have cost the company somewhere in the region of £10,000.
Writing in a blog post on the developer's site, Johnson expressed extreme frustration at the lack of support he felt he received from Microsoft, making it clear that not only does he recommend other devs steer clear of RT, but that Rubicon will never be producing a game for a Microsoft platform again.
"A week after release we have made the princely sum of £52 in sales," he writes. "That's not a typo. And despite this, and the fact that GBWG is one of only several halfway decent launch titles, Microsoft have confirmed they will not give us any promotional features or help us with visibility in any way.
"If you're familiar with their new store, this means our app is forever consigned to the garbage bin, presumably earning us less than £52 a week in future. Even if that rate is sustained, it will take just under two years before we recoup the salary paid to the guy who did the port."
Microsoft, feels Johnson, are putting out titles on the tablet OS to die, failing to offer any merchandising support and leaving developers feeling massively under appreciated.
"Apple regularly promote our apps," he continues. "Android regularly promote our apps. Even RIM (Blackberry) regularly promote our apps. We enjoy working with those companies and it's nice to see them acknowledge that we bring them some small amount of additional value to their setup. Firms our size need a bit of a leg up, and we go out of our way to show our gratitude to the above for helping us out in this way from time to time.
"Microsoft on the other hand clearly do not value us at all. Even whilst there's almost nothing to promote, they will not feature our title for bizarre admin reasons. And this is whilst their store is empty and they need developers like us to fill their store far more than developers like us need them to pay us £50 a week."
