The Urge to Buy Old Crap

Brian KrakowBrian Krakow Registered User regular
So, recently I inherited a Konica Auto S2, which the internet tells me is a pretty decent camera.

1010672278_2e2ba51bda.jpg

Unfortunately, the light meter in mine seems to be broken, so I bought this fine specimen of Soviet engineering/knock off of more expensive western light meters, the exceptionally pretty (well, for a light meter) Leningrad 2:

leningrad2_2.JPG

Anyways, to make a long story short now I'm sorely tempted to buy a Soviet camera before I've even gotten my first roll of film from the Konica back. Soon enough I'll surely be drowning in Soviet optics.

So, SE++, what old junk do you waste your money on (or inherit, or hell, even bought when it was new)? Antique furniture? Betamax players? The Monkees merchandise? Doesn't matter what it is as long as it's old. In addition to my soon-to-be extensive Soviet photography collection I also own a couple of Super 8 movie cameras and a typewriter. Yes, I do wear a keffiyeh, skinny jeans, and horned rim glasses, why do you ask?

Tl;dr: tell me about your old crap.

Do you actually DO anything with the crap you collect? Cause that's far more interesting than collecting. (Unless it's photography and writing, the most accessible and thusly worst forms of popular art)

I have a pentax K1000 from like the early 70s, it's got a dirty prism so focus is kinda hard to do on it sometimes but I totally shoot with it way more than my DSLR. I've got 2 rolls that need to be developed right now and I'm almost done with a roll of 3200 ISO, think I've got like 5 or 6 exposures left on it. Can't wait to see how that turns out aside from "beautifully grainy."

I'm using the photography stuff and occasionally the typewriter comes in handy (my handwriting is atrocious); I don't know what I'd do with them that don't relate to photography or writing, though. I also tried to fix/update a different old light meter to run on a calculator solar panel but failed miserably, so there's that.

I'm always on the lookout for vintage clothing.

My collection isn't huge but I've got some cool stuff, like a '30s bowler and a couple '20s black bowties. I also have a tailcoat I don't know the dating on (and haven't worn yet - still need to put together the rest of the outfit).

I guess I also have some older records, I got them all from relatives though. The only ones in my collection that I paid for are from the last decade.

Well, I've always been pretty interested in photography but never enough to actually go out and pursue it seriously as a hobby. Inheriting the Konica set the ball rolling in that regard. I love the look of vintage cameras, and after doing some investigation there's also a lot of really good cameras you can get for relatively cheaply, and the Soviet models (as they are basically mass produced copies of professional German cameras) are right up there.

And what Hullis said, of course.

I go to old bookstores sometimes

I always walk out with over a hundred dollars worth of purchases

The oldest one I have is a little something from the 19th century about ancient Roman heroes

But my pride and joy is a pair of first editions of old Ian Fleming books and a Raymond Chandler novel from the fifties

    (I like old books)

Old books are something I'd love to collect if I had a lot more income to live comfortably, but can't really justify budgeting for as it is.

    They're so cool though.

I think my bike is like 30 years old, I got it from an older relative (hell yeah free shit) and it still works like a champ, I'd have to check the actual age though. I don't own many Old Things, I fear clutter.

I have a love affair with vinyl, and just as important, the equipment with which to make it sound boss.

I'm currently using a Technics SL-1700 MK II direct-drive turntable from the mid-80s or thereabouts. It was my mother's, but she had left it neglected in the garage for a decade or two. When I got it, it was a mess, so I had to gut it and replace/repair the turntable mechanism myself. Luckily, the arm and counterweight were still intact, so I was lucky in that respect. Now it's a heavy-duty, stainless steel behemoth, and it sounds freshhhhhh. I've got it running into a Sony DA3ES receiver (rated for 600W), two Klipsch Synergy Series KSF-8.5s, and a KSW-10 subwoofer.

my turntable is a new sherwood (with a cartridge off an old plynth turntable that sounds better), but i have a technics amp from the early eighties that i found at an op-shop for $30. i had to replace my old one because it had picked up a hum at certain volumes, and figured even if the thing was busted it would be fun to play around with for a day

turns out i got quite the bargain

Now that is the business. How much power is it rated for?

  • bsjezzbsjezz Registered User regular
    edited November 2012
    hundred per channel i believe

more than enough in a one bedroom apartment

edit: one of the reasons it's so cool is it's tiny. power amp, reciever, graphic equalizer, tuner and a (broke-ass) tape deck that would probably fit in a shoebox. if you left the lid off.

edit: since we're on stereo gear, these are the speakers i've had for many years - a hand-me-down from my muso family. they sound awesome. mine have cloth covering and the wood veneer is all-class

I have an almost complete collection of first edition Moomin books. My grandfather gave me some money when I graduated high school and that's what I bought! (They weren't very expensive actually).

And I just bought an antique French farmhouse table off eBay. God I'm excited for that to arrive.

But yeah old cameras are awesome. There's no way I'd have time for proper photography and development nowadays but I love seeing what other people do with older tech. Film has so much more soul than digital.

I don't collect old books, but I've got a bookshelf with a few old books on it. There's dozens of books on acting and drama from the 40s and 50s, purchases made by my grandmother for my father when he was in acting school. The oldest books I see at a cursory glance:

A 1917 edition of The Works of Guy de Maupaussant
A 1932 edition of The Flying Carpet
A 1934 edition of The Poems and Plays of Robert Browning
A 1938 collection of Edgar Allen Poe (which no longer has a spine :'( )

It's cool that I have these, and I try to take good care of them, but I'm mostly here for the smell. Old book smell is so good.

Over Thanksgiving my dad and I went through the old family bible, which is from around 1830, as near as we can tell. It has all kinds of neat things tucked in the pages - old pressed flowers, locks of hair, newspaper clippings used as bookmarks.
