Where I'm blurring things is that we don't have personal days versus vacation days. A few people over 10 years ago abused the crap out of that, so now it all gets lumped together as PTO. Because of that, it's simplifying the situation we're discussing, which means that you're making a lot more sense when it's not dealing with my place of employment.
While I agree that being insensitive is an issue, so is being oversensitive.
This is fantastic. I was looking up details on an error message and got directed to a thread on Spiceworks. One of the responses was "It's on a system I don't like so I'm just going to ignore it." Problem solved
I just had a bout of food poisoning last about 4 hours last sunday. Only reason I brought it up. I'd have called out sick, then at noon I'd probably have been ok to BBQ. In fact I did. Some BBQ babyback ribs.
I'd totally have invited people over if I could have.
not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me
So let's say I had the shits, and then went to a BBQ party after it cleared up at 3:00pm?
To be honest, I don't give a shit about it unless I must come to work / work late because of someone who called sick and then see him having fun at a BBQ.
Realizing that it's not smoke that's coming out of the back of your server, but dust.
We had a lightning strike really close by that caused the power to flicker. Batteries and surge protection seems to have done it's job, but for a split second the fans on the server sped up to %100, which blew a huge cloud of grey-ish dust out of the back of the server.
This PowerShell, so handy. Went to do a repair install on a PC that was having driver issues, didn't have the right iso with SP1 included so I came back to my desk to download it, couldn't remember if I logged off the computer or not. Start up PS, do a few man commands and see Restart-Computer and examples how to grab Admin credentials, next thing you know I'm restarting the computer on the other side of the building from my desk.
Because if you're going to attempt to squeeze that big black monster into your slot you will need to be able to take at least 12 inches or else you're going to have a bad time...

Serious panic moment there for a second.
Jesus, clean the filters on your server room aircon!

I've just been using the shutdown -f -r -t 01 -m \\machine-name command from the command prompt to force reboots.

Have you guys every toyed around with those so-called "Matchbox PCs"? We've considered tinkering with a few to see what their functionality might provide us. One of the ideas has been to setup one in each conference room and remote into a virtual desktop for presentations.

A few of us were discussing how exactly to make a résumé stand out, and I came up with the idea of etching my résumé into a stone slab. Now that's how you stand out. Fucking thing would need a wheelbarrow, but damn would they remember me!

They're handy, but way too slow to do anything remotely business like. RDP works okay on them.

PowerShell-ing scripts for remotely uninstalling all the crappy software that people install by not deselecting "Are you sure you don't want this Toolbar that totally won't slow down your computer and make IE a bigger piece of shit"
Because if you're going to attempt to squeeze that big black monster into your slot you will need to be able to take at least 12 inches or else you're going to have a bad time...

That makes sense about; I don't expect them to replace desktops. I just think it'd be much more convenient than setting up a laptop every time someone wants to do a presentation, not to mention no longer needing to juggle around laptops for internal meetings.
What about using something like GoToMyPC where the majority is host-side?
While I agree that being insensitive is an issue, so is being oversensitive.
I think it's the nature of the architecture. VNC is more of a screen scrape with gzip tacked on for performance, whereas RDP is more of a client/server video card type architecture.

I once made a PS script that cleared out a bunch of downtime print queues of jobs older than 1 day every night.
The server guys never implemented it because the servers turned out to not have a high enough version of .NET and PS on them...
But I thought it was neat anyway.

I wrote an application that would, if you had the right screen open, transfer patient data by "typing" it for you.

New thread title? [System Admins and IT Monkeys] Powershell for every meal.
life's a game that you're bound to lose / like using a hammer to pound in screws
fuck up once and you break your thumb / if you're happy at all then you're god damn dumb
that's right we're on a fucked up cruise / God is dead but at least we have booze
bad things happen, no one knows why / the sun burns out and everyone dies
EDIT: No, seriously. Just... fixing what ain't broke, that's UEFI.
Aioua on

At my last job I had this real cluster of a project that involved taking all these product manuals that only existed in paper form, scanning them in and turning them into PDFs. Thing is, they wanted them in a version appropriate for reading on a computer and one for easy printing out and stapling into booklets.
So after I wrote the Python script that took the giant 11x17 tifs and split them into 8.5x11 pages and ordered them correctly for reading (god what a nightmare) I wrote a AutoIt script that automated opening each file, cleaning up the scan, deskewing and doing OCR on it.
Automating Adobe Acrobat is a pain in the fucking ass, cause apparently they don't expose their menus in the normal way.
Finally taking a deep look into Powershell... shit's fucking awesome
Looks like I inspired someone to learn Powershell !
On the Powershell topic, I created a simple script yesterday to create an Active Directory user account and generate a random password (following the security guidelines of course) then output the results in a txt file.
It's a great time saver for those simple accounts I have to create everyday.
If I wanted to use Powershell to edit Exchange mailboxes, do I need a specific add-in or something? I'm trying to use the set-mailbox cmdlet and it's not being recognized.
While I agree that being insensitive is an issue, so is being oversensitive.
I haven't done any Exchange script but if I recall correctly, you must run those scripts in the "Exchange Management Shell", which is basically a Powershell windows for Exchange.
These two machines will probably be done PXE booting by the time I come back on Monday.
They're like 10% done and I only started them this morning when I got in...

A bit off-topic, but what are you guys listening to while working (if you listen to anything during the day)? Looking for something new to listen to while working.

Oh wait... no anime threads allowed... never mind
Also, I recommend reading some of these (especially the gotcha book) to get the newcomers started: http://powershell.org/wp/newsletter/
