I'm a huge lover of 4x space games (and non-space games, I suppose). My all-time favorite is Stars!, but I've spent lots of time with the Space Empires series as well (2 through 5), Master of Orion (even the third one, which I thought had some good elements), and I've dabbled here and there with others. (I respect GalCiv2, but haven't put a ton of time into it yet.)
A few months ago I grabbed Endless Space as a Beta off Steam, and immediately paid for the full version.
The game isn't perfect - but it seems to be very, very good. The interface alone is pretty much fun to play. The creative planet / system based builds allow for very clear strategic decisions. The races have really interesting strengths/ weaknesses and are quite orthogonal.
The combat is clear & beautiful. It might be a bit skewed in what-beats-what, but I don't think that's a death sentence.
The tech tree is reasonable - if not exactly inspiring. And it's absolutely beautiful in its layout.
The one "huh?" element of the game is moving ships to contested systems / blockading / changing control. That part is a bit messy.
Still, my experience overall has been pretty wildly positive. And the reviews I've read seemed to be in sync. But yet... the game seems to be gone from everyone's radar. Did someone find a fatal flaw? Are we waiting on a patch? Are 4x space games just super niche and I never noticed?
