I wanted to bump this since we're getting close to PAX. I would be completely down for an informal solo attendees get-together sometime between Wednesday and Friday. And I hope to see some of you at the Pokécrawl!

I'm heading up alone by plane (from Pittsburgh) on Thursday and will be heading to one of the board-game nights that day. Are any other solo peeps heading to one of them as well? I'm totally down for meeting up at one of them and playing a few games. :P

I'm going solo, and will be at the Forumer's dinner followed by Game Night at the Marriot.
I'm going solo for the first time (was with a friend the last two times I went). I'm actually looking forward to it. The freedom to do whatever I want, without having to coordinate with someone else.
I will likely be doing the Thursday night gaming. I will have free time on Sunday post-con while I await my Monday morning flight.

Yeah. I know the feeling! My roommates and I have a lot in common and usually head to stuff like this together. I feel kind of bad leaving them behind, but the off-on-your-own thing is always exciting and I'm really looking forward to it! xD

I'm heavily agoraphobic, and aside from work I haven't left my house in about 3 years. Going to pax by myself! Something about having an intense passion for something that can bring so many different people together makes you forget about your problems and gives you the drive to see something like gaming succeed and progress further.

I'll be solo on the Pokecrawl on your team, I'll be wearing a "The Rock" jersey. It'll be nice to do a round with another solo attendee.

Fantastic. I'll find you.
I won't be at the forumer's dinner unless a spot opens up somehow (would have loved to go). I probably won't be at the game nights because of the Pokécrawl, but I'm going to try to make my way over to one of them if I'm reasonably coherent afterwards.
I'm also thinking about making an appearance at JJ Foley's for the Tuesday game night - I'm leaning towards going to this. Wednesday is still good ( @Nickzilla ) if anyone will be around then, or meeting up during PAX itself if anyone needs people to wander around the expo hall and the corridors with!

So far it seems like the Game Night at the Mariott it the unofficial meetup xP.
Sounds perfect. I like that so many solo paxers will be at the Marriot as it will mean more groups of players that don't already all know each other (nothing wrong with that, just a different vibe).
Guess I probably should've posted earlier, but I'm flying in solo from Ohio Thursday afternoon, so I'm gonna try to hit Made In MA and maybe other stuff Thursday night if I'm not jetlagged. If any other soloers wanna hang during the weekend, I'd be up for it.
I'm flying in Thursday afternoon from NC (landing around 3:15pm) and I'm definitely looking for something to do that night so I'm not just stuck in hotel room.

Come to one of the pre-pax game nights! There are two this year, one at the Westin and one at the the Marriott Long Wharf. There is forum thread for each, so you can see what games will be at each. From this thread, it looks like there will be more solo paxers at the Marriott, but either one will be a blast.

It's the same time zone, so jet lag shouldn't be an issue...just the tiredness from dealing with airports and what comes with them. Hopefully you're not dealing with a flight where you could have driven there faster...
So my situation is kinda weird, I loved games all my life, but perhaps not the MOST geeky ones, like D&D or WOW. I'm not a "I only play Madden" anatomy-of-a-homeboy-meme type either. Basically, while I've played a ton of different games in my time, heh, they're not the kind that draw their players into joining forums or socializing with others that are addicted to 'em.
-- So, while I wouldn't be afraid to strike up a conversation standing around or at a cafeteria table, what I fear is approaching or bothering the types of dudes trench deep into a game of Carcassone or something, while I may be offered to join in, and some nice chap will inevitably try to teach the rules to me, I'd just be in way over my head, you know?
-- My situation is weird because I don't read PA every day, only when someone in the games biz tweets a solid "oh those Penny Arcade guys hit the nail on the head today" type deals whenever there's controversy in the industry (Twice a week?!) I never came to a PAX before cause I assumed it'd be SXSW expensive (nearly 1,000 bucks). Then I found about rock band night, a karaoke show the Harmonix team puts on tonight. I scored tickets to it but not PAX itself (I live only 100 miles away, so an easy drive, still worth it even just to attend this one pre-event event) and my jaw dropped when I realized its only $70. Crap, I'll be sure to buy Seattle tickets when they come up a month or two from now.
-- Long story short, I'm in town today by myself, and want to know if there's anybody meeting up or doing any daytime events today. And if you're going to Rock Band Night, hey we can hang out and chat before the show. I have my SUV with me of course, so if you want to avoid taxis and buses, I'd be happy to drive (and accept a dollar or two if your generous for gas). I'll be one of the numerous people from giantbomb.com wearing casually racist CHINA DON'T CARE pepto colored tshirts.
I'm also effectively soloing though I have some friends who are coming separately. I'll be at the Westin gaming tonight with a huge pile of games -- feel free to say hi!
I'll be getting to PAX around 2:30 this afternoon - wanted to be there first thing this morning, but was recovering from the Pokecrawl and I wanted to watch the Duke game...probably missed tourney signups, ugh. Anyway, I'll be wandering around in my Team Yellow shirt from last night (with many buttons), so I should be pretty easy to spot. Say hello!

anyone interested in doing some console freeplay? we could play smash bros or ultimate marvel vs capcom or anything really.
Good luck, console freeplay got way lamer this year. Last year they had twice as many SNES and NES consoles. Every time I've tried going this weekend, I get to the front of the line and get told they have a PS1, a Gamecube, or an Atari 2600 available, but anything else is a half hour wait or more....

well i also have a new table top game i just bought that i wanted to try out. if we can get at least 3 people in to play it could be a fun thing to do.
From my experience, PAX folks are good about chatting with strangers, as others have said. However, I've never made a friend at PAX and I've been going since 2006. An event like this cannot help you if you are already the kind of person in which the rest of the world takes no interest.
In previous years, I went to PAX alone, but this year, I managed to see a lot of people that I already knew. I would say that PAX helps strengthen your existing bonds with people that you already know, but as for making new friends - it's just not happening. I know that many people have rejected my overtures for sharing phone numbers - even people who live in my neck of the woods.
Last night, I went drinking after PAX with a few buddies. We tried to gatecrash the Curse party but failed, but it was one of the best bonding experiences of my life - me and a bunch of drunk guys trying to gatecrash a rave.

well gee, thanks for the depressing reality check.

Sorry, sir. I was feeling pretty down when I wrote that... Attending PAX alone can be a lot of fun. It can also be really lonely and depressing. It depends on what you're hoping to get out of it, and from my experience, if you're hoping to make new friends then you should probably find a way to do that before PAX. As XX55XX said, attending PAX with friends is amazing, and can strengthen your relationships with those people.
This year, I'm starting a Meetup group in my town for folks who attend PAX every year. It remains to be seen whether or not that's a good idea for other folks who would otherwise attend PAX solo, but I'm hopeful.
I was solo for a few hours at PAX. Then my friend finally arrived. I'm way to shy to strike up a conversation with a stranger; it was getting a little dull for me waiting in lines and talking to nobody. I have to fix that somehow...
I mean, I personally went out of my way to see my acquaintances and friends during PAX this year. I finally got a smartphone, I started learning how to text efficiently, and I got really good at navigating the building with the help of landmarks to reach people. I was mostly alone throughout PAX because all of my buddies wanted to do their own thing, but when we did get together, it was so awesome.
I personally prefer to navigate the convention by myself anyways. I was with two college buddies for about an hour on Friday and we eventually split up because they wanted to do a certain panel that I wasn't particularly interested in. Plus, I felt like I was dragging them down by dictating which booths we looked at on the show floor, so it was probably for the best.
Just wanted to pop in and apologize to the one or two folks in here I wasn't able to catch up with. I got a cold on Sunday and it was a struggle to get through PAX just alone that day.
