Legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck passed today at 91. He and sax player Paul Desmond nerded out on odd time signatures and turned them into surprisingly accessible jams. Piano is one of my least favorite instruments in jazz, often taking up too much metaphorical space, but in the right hands it can pull off both complexity and understatement. That shit can get urgent in the right context.
