I saw a couple people mention Annihilation, and having just read the first couple issues of Guardians of the Galaxy, I seem to recall them mentioning Annihilation....are the two related? And if so, should I read Annihilation (what is it?).
Basically Marvel's Cosmic stuff had been sitting around unused for a while and the Annihilation event reintroduced guys like Drax and Thanos and Gamora and Star-Lord to the Marvel Universe. It's epic superhero space opera, and it's awesome.
Annihlation is great, highly recommend it if you enjoyed Guardians. Conquest is pretty good too.
The Nova series is also a great read, and touches on both events and more. And has more Cosmo in it.

That all sounds pretty awesome. So what are the books that I should buy?

Annihilation is in 3 trades, the 3rd contains the main series, the first 2 are all the build-up side-stories. Drax and Nova in book 1, Silver Surfer, Ronan, and Super Skrull in book 2.
Most of that is available digitally though, if you're a Comixology user.
Confession time, I actually skipped book 2 of Annihilation. Also some of the other Conquest books (Wraith, Quasar). And pretty much all of War/Realm of Kings aside from any crossovers in GotG and Nova.
I have every intention of picking'em up on sale someday. But it wasn't hard at all to get by with the stuff I did have. For Annihilation, definitely get books 1 & 3.
Young Avengers was pretty dang rad but I didn't dig the ending all that much.
I was actually looking forward to Wiccan getting over his mopey bullshit and then OH HEY NOPE HE IS GONNA KEEP FUCKIN UP
+1

it's the start of the series he needs to start as a screwup to have room to improve! and the solicit totally said he was going to do something really dumb!
I am not saying GILLEN THIS IS TERRIBLE YOU MONSTER AAARGH
just that I was happy that one character was finally moving in a more positive direction and then had the rug pulled away at the end of the first issue
didn't ruin the issue but left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth

Kind of glad I'm waiting to read Young Avengers after this arc since it's That's So Wiccan.

I guess I just never got the impression he was moving in a positive direction
I read the part after Teddy yelled at him and thought "...shit. He took exactly the wrong thing away from that, he doesn't get it at all."
Modern Cosmic Marvel, as mentioned, was pretty much kicked off by Annihilation. (Though Annihilation builds off of some events of Thanos: Samaritan) If you're a completionist, the whole story is pretty much contained in the following trades (though you can defintely skip a few of 'em)
Annihilation Classic - Skippable
Thanos: Ephiphany - Skippable
Thanos: Samartian - Skippable, but I'd recommend it. Hard to find though
Annihilation Book 1 - Must Read
Annihilation Book 2 - Skippable, but I'd recommend it. Fun to watch Ronin and Super-Skrull be the protagonists
Annihilation Book 3 - Must Read
Nova Volume 1: Conquest - Skippable, as it's reproduced in Conquest Book 2, aside from a 3 issue stint on Earth
Annihilation: Conquest Book 1 - Must Read, as it has the event kick off and the formation of the team that would become the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Annihilation: Conquest Book 2 - Recommended, as it has the conclusion to the event.
Nova Volume 2: Knowhere - Must Read, not only sets up certain key events in Conquest, but also for Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1: Legacy - Must Read
Nova Volume 3: Secret Invasion - Recommended
Secret Invasion: Inhumans - Skippable, but sets up the Inhumans half of War of Kings
Nova Volume 4: Nova Corps - Must Read
Emperor Vulcan - Haven't read it, but I'd imagine it's skippable, but sets up the Shi'ar's half of the War of Kings
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2: War of Kings Book 1 - Must Read
Road to the War of Kings - Skippable, but recommended if you care about the event
War of Kings: Warriors - Skippable, but recommended if you care about the event
Nova Volume 5: War of Kings - Recommended
War of Kings - Recommended
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3: War of Kings Book 2 - Must Read
Realm of Kings - Skippable, especially the Son of Hulk story. (So bad)
Nova Volume 6: Realm of Kings - Recommended
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 4: Realm of Kings - Must Read
Thanos Imperative - Must Read
Annihilators - Skippable, but Recommended
Annihilators: Earthfall - Skippable
And then the first Avengers Assemble collection by Bendis; but that isn't out in trade format yet.
Also, Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter doesn't really tie into anything directly, but I recommend it on principle.
While it is indeed cool; I'm not sure it's cool enough to be worth tracking down an out of print trade that'll probably cost twice as much as it originally did, and which has 4 out of it's 7 issues printed in another book. Also, as cool as the Earth story is, it doesn't really play too heavily into greater events for the most part. Hence why it's skippable. Certainly, if you wind up wanting more Nova, I'd recommend tracking it down; but for the overall cosmic story, it's not necassary. You get what you need out of it in Conquest 2.
The little bit of Uncanny Avengers in the MOTW thread more or less sold me. I think I'll give it a shot. At least to see if they can turn Havok into a character I care about. Especially if it starts to seem like there could be some interesting confrontations with the brothers in the pipeline.

Know nothing about these characters I really dug the first issues. The only thing that bugged me was the pacing. I'm used to issues being somewhat self contained, this felt like it was definitely more serialised than what I usually read. I'm thinking I might have to wait and get a few issues at once.

Is that Iron Man or Spandex Man? It always bugged me seeing heroes drawn with their muscles bulging out. Especially those who should have said muscles covered up by a suit of iron
I think the older costumes actually had some gimmick, where the gold pieces were sort of a flimsy material, that became form-fitting and solid, when a current was run through them.

it's basically the beginning of that whole Marvel cosmic thing and is very good yes
you should read Annihilation

Annihilation book 1
Annihilation book 2
Annihilation book 3
Nova vol. 1
Annihilation: Conquest book 1

Unfortunately, some of those are out of print at the moment, though they can sometimes still be found cheaply.

Gillen can't just go "he's better now, happened off camera"
you start him off the way he was when readers last saw him, and then have the character grow from there
Which made me excited for him to not be one.
And then he goes and makes probably the dumbest decision he has yet to make.
I get where Gillen is going but Billy has been so dumb for so long I didn't need another YA FUCKED UP, KID.
A lifelong fuckup isn't going to suddenly improve on a dime, he'll fuck up an attempt or two to change as well
if he pulled a complete 180 in the first issue it would be way too easy and remove a chance for him to have an interesting character arc
also something something feels
just that I was happy that one character was finally moving in a more positive direction and then had the rug pulled away at the end of the first issue

It helps that Quentin is at heart a decent guy. He just sort of became a psychic god by accident and that can be confusing.

Havok is supposed to be the most important member of the cast so I expect great things.
Thank you very very much!
