One of the biggest things I need to work on is not getting into head-ons and if someone is trying to get on my tail, to not kick in the elevators in a way that let's them fire right into my cockpit.
Avoiding head-ons can, coincidentally, be unavoidable in some cases. The most effect way of dodging someone with a height advantage is to turn towards them and stay level (don't point up at them). They may get a few shots off on a pass, but in most planes you'll be able to turn and come back (or escape) before they can turn around on you (because most people can't/don't dive vertically, so it's more difficult than just rolling).
My biggest problems are getting stuff on my tail with a pilot who has all of a plane's upgrades. An otsu should not be able to outclimb a Bf 109. But in some cases it can and it usually has a giant cannon to work with.
I am liking my Spitfires and Hurricanes more and more, though.
Still not liking most of the Japanese planes. I ended up doing surprisingly well with the Zero with the floaters (7-0), but everything either flies sort of sluggish or has no firepower in the 2-3 range..

The thing about pilot kills is that they are absolutely the most vulnerable part of your plane, and a properly lead burst on a deflection shot, or a well aimed head-on shot will kill you, high vitality or no.
Its part of why I really like flying the Hurricanes and MG-armed Spitfires against higher tier opponents.
@EvmaAlsar What nation are you trying to fly as? The two easiest ones to fly in terms of mouse aiming are the Japanese and the Brits since they're both really into turn fighting. Everyone else has ok to awful rudder making them harder to line shots up with.
Bombing is a pain because the tanks will move if they hear the bombs coming due to a high altitude drop and a lot of the bombs require a direct hit to take out a tank. Level bombing is a waste against vehicles unless you do it really close to the ground. Dive bombers are the anti vehicle kings since you can park the bombs right where you want them. Even then you need to release pretty close to the ground.
It's a mixture of mouse control seeming to be really unresponsive to me (it's not the mouse, it can be as sensitive as hell when I want it to be), and the HUD being unhelpful in the virtual cockpit (I can't see shit in the actual cockpit). It's got a circle that's there just for the sake of being there, which distracts me from the much smaller reticle that actually tells me where the nose of the plane is facing and my crosshairs. Shit's frustrating. Third person is a nightmare for the controls.
I'd use my controller but the damn game won't let planes fly level if I just leave the stick alone, it'll keep pitching up.
Well the circle is there to tell you where you're aiming to go, not where you're currently going. You can change your reticle/crosshairs in the options. Honestly, I find 3rd person mode to be the most comfortable, and this is coming from someone who always preferred playing first person for the sake of immersion.
Third person dramatically helps your awareness. Cockpit view isn't going to let you see anyone below more than half of your viewing area.
Also, what Damoon said. The circle is where you want to go, not where you're going (at least for your plane; when you're aiming at other planes the circle that appears is a basic firing solution). And if you're trying to use the keyboard to turn or do maneuvers you're going to be fighting mouselook and it's going to make your controls sluggish. Try a flight or game just using the mouse and then bring the keyboard back into it.
The way I've found to help speed up my maneuvers is to only use the keyboard for pitching over quickly to start a turn, or when I need to do a sudden climb. Being able to effectively slam the ailerons to their max position in an instant really helps get around behind an enemy I'm dogfighting with. Otherwise, all my flying is done with the mouse.

3rd person is what most everyone uses. Do remember that even in arcade the planes still operate within the realm of a basic flight model so they won't be Ace Combat easy. Turn rate, roll rate, etc. will still factor in to a degree.
The virtual cockpit functions like the HUD in a modern fighter where you have a set circle that shows where you're aiming the plane and a small icon that shows where you're actually going. It's pretty handy for doing involved maneuvers since you have the angle of attack indicator to show your rate of climb/dive and you see how far you're actually rolled. Generally though you'll want to use 3rd.
For actual controls I make it a point to manually operate the ailerons so that I can keep my plane operating within its preferred manner. This is less important for most turn fighters but is critical in the US planes and still fairly important for the Germans and Russians. You'll get better performance out of the UK/Japanese planes manually rolling the plane.

FYI, zee Germans are a lot more fun once I hit 4-5. The He 111 holds 32 goddamn 50kg bombs, which is a lot of fun on the maps with columns of tanks. It's actually kind of difficult to use them all in one go; I spammed them to hell and got 9 tanks in a row on one pass, but still had like 18 bombs.

Problem is, 50lb bombs just tickle tanks. Only really useful vs soft targets in my experience.

Once you unlock 8x250lbs, that game changes!
I like the Ju88 better. You can't ever get rid of the 50s, but you can strap on 250s on the wings. It flys way better, has dive brakes, better turrets, and generally looks cooler IMHO.

But the best looking bomber in the whole game is the Mitchell, I think we can all agree.

It takes a direct hit, but the 50kg bombs can destroy any land vehicle out there. They do have less splash damage, though, so high-altitude bombing can be annoying on moving targets.
They can't get pillboxes, though, so the 250kg are a good upgrade for sure.

@togsolid you want me to work on getting you some first wins?
Nah, thanks though. Unless I can get my internet situation resolved (in progress right now) then I'm gonna be massively behind everyone anyway.
Well yeah that's why I offered, ya silly billy!
Which nation you focusing on?
Russia/UK/US and only because I don't dig on the Japanese and the German planes are made from poop in the lower tiers. I don't want to grind crappy planes to get to the good stuff in the mid-tier German line.
The He-51 isn't terrible, the MC. 202 is fairly decent (according to people), and the He-112 with the cannon works well enough if you use it as a poor man's Bf 109 (always climb, only BnZ with minimal turning at the bottom of a dive). Plus: Stukas. You get Stukas at 3 and Stukas are like the best thing ever.
Not the best in terms of damage. Or speed. Or turn time. Or defensive armament. Or design choices. But still the best.
(also, I need to steal my SH3 from my other computer or get my list of mods and figure out if it works properly in uber widescreen on my new computer
Of course, if Gaijin comes out with ships and submarines first, that may be a definite end to the LP.)

I maintain that the 109 E-3 is really good but most of my experience playing that plane was from before they implemented the current upgrade system. So what I used was way closer to how it performs maxed out.
Might've even been before they added ammo belts, even, and the MG-FFs feel really clunky compared to what you get later.
The E-1 is apparently this zippy as hell turnfighter, but kinda suffers for being armed with 4 7.92mm guns.
The Dorniers are basically lesser Beaufighters, by which I mean really good if you know how to use them. Again, I played these back when you had two upgrade options.
I just discovered this game...apparently landing while smashing your nose into the ground is considered a success in the tutorial...hooray for me!
Hey, I did the same thing! Only mine was on the carrier. Seemed to work out okay, not really.
So, for my first day of playing this ever, I don't feel too bad coming in around second to seventh on my team each round. Pretty fun game.
I can't quite wrap my head around the mouse controls for an airplane...I'm reading it's the best way, but I may have to buy a stick for this game. My old man brain is failing in this concept.
Think of it as holding a piece of string a few meters ahead of the aircraft, your hand at one end, and the plane's nose on the other. You pull left, right, up, and down, and the string draws the plane that way via all the plane's control surfaces.
@Cabezone it's important to remap the elevator controls. If you just use the misuse trying to do a loop if tight turn is a sad, janky affair, but using the elevator controls allow for smooth movement.

Sent in my application. Pilot name is Bolthorn_kvlt there because someone beat me to Bolthorn. Still have so many things I need to figure out about this game. I do prefer mouse flight. Is that truly the best way?
