They're definitely better in HB, no doubt. Fun times on Guardian Angel yesterday! But HB is still kind of a pain unless you have a good Event in rotation.
AB is also flooded with Russian nonsense planes at 8-9, which makes the P-47 feel even worse. I would kill for the HB flight models with AB respawns.
In the next three weeks we will be issueing challenges to identify our most determined and loyal fighters.
Receive and complete these new combat missions to earn your access to the Closed Beta test and get a chance to win other valuable gifts like War Thunder special t-shirts and watches. The more you complete the higher your chances are.
The testing itself is currently scheduled to start before December 4th.
So brace yourselves and be ready for the first mission that we are issuing today, on November 13th!
From 13:00 GMT November 13th to 11:00 GMT November 14th (6:00 PST November 13th to 4:00 PST November 14th):
destroy 60 ground units in Arcade battles or
30 ground units in History battles or
30 ground units in Full Real battles.
You can check progress in Profile- achievements -> achievements -> SPECIAL
There are three tiers for the "kill 60 ground targets" achievement, FYI. I don't know if getting 1-3 is required to make it in the "drawing" for beta access, or just improves your chances. Matches are a helluva lot faster with everyone going for ground targets, but are still generally pretty close. Had some great games with @Farangu and @Woggle tonight.

Huh, I don't think I've ever seen a company offer a chance at beta access as an achievement reward before.
It's a pretty great idea. Though I guess it's not too common for a full close beta to be so directly tied to another game from the same dev. Usually that would be kind of cannibalistic if the two are competitors in the same genre, or just weird if they're completely unrelated.
The best thing ever would be to see access to the next COD beta hinge on your ability to make two dudes fall in love in The Sims 3 or something. If I had a billion dollars...

War Thunder Ground Units — Task #3: Task for November 15th 2013
From 11:00 GMT November 15th to 11:00 GMT November 16th (3:00 PST November 15th to 3:00 PST November 16th)
Destroy the following number of enemy fighters:
Arcade — 30 fighters
History — 10 fighters
Full Real - 5 fighters
You can track your progress on the 'Profile — Achievements — Special' tab in the menu.
Completing the daily missions gives you a chance to earn access in the upcoming Ground Forces closed beta test. The more tasks you complete, the higher is your chance of being invited.
I just started playing this game. I am having so much fun. I just hit rank 4 on USA. I think I'm rank 3 Russian and German, Rank 2 Japan and Rank 1 Britian.
I've only played Arcade mode, but I'm really enjoying it.
OK guys: 9pm eastern tonight we get in bombers and try to take out the enemy base as quickly as possible for the win. H6Ks, Wellingtons, Mitchells, He111s, whatever you have with upgraded bomb racks

Today's beta-task might the first I don't finish. In arcade they are clay pigeons, in HB I have to wait 2 minutes to even get a chance to fly, and when I do, instead of getting a 4x for each kill, I got 2x.
Space Engine videos with appropriate music. Enjoy.
Low tiers German planes are almost universally frosted shit. They don't get any good until you start getting BF109s.

Man this daily task was a PITA. Had to go through a lot of planes until I finally found the ones that actually gave me progress. Stukas don't, Beaufighters don't, Pe-3s for some reason didn't, what finally gave me progress were the Japanaese Ki heavy fighters.
That's 6 days in the bag. Hope they don't do this much longer, their ideas are getting more and more far fetched.

I decided that I wasn't THAT interested in the Closed beta, and am perfectly content to wait for the Open Beta. Meanwhile, I'm pulling my B-25 out of the hangar!
I've found my Me-410/U4's 50 mm cannon works very much as intended. Taking down bombers from nearly 1 km away. Suddenly H6K4, B-25s and Heinkels are juicy, juicy prey instead of nuisances that need 1000s of rounds. Sometimes I feel bad that they spent all that time flying over to my base just to get blown apart in one shot.
People say the IL-2 is a flying tank. Well, the U4 is literally firing the gun from a tank.
Let's count the number of times I got shot down today by teammates who join in on a dogfight, follow my own flight path precisely, and proceed to fire through me to get at the plane I've been pursuing.
Oh, wait! I'm not sure human numbers go that high!

...or you're hammering away on a target when some idiot zips in and levels out directly in your firing angle. I know I've been guilty of passing through friendly lines of fire, but I always hop out of the way when I realize.
It's a side effect of follow-the-dot dogfighting paired with the homogenized flight models in AB. It never happens to me in HB since two planes can rarely stay in perfect turning sync for more than a few seconds and maneuvering is less smoothed out.
Not that I'm a snob or anything; I mostly play AB.
It's also incredibly hard to shake people in AB. Basically the only thing you have going for you is turning radius and (maybe slightly) climb speed. It really gives a huge advantage to the British planes and the (eventual) zeroes and hayabusas (...and basically all of the biplanes).
If there was actual HB with respawns I would play that all the time, but I too usually play AB.

HB with respawns would fix 90% of the problems I have with the game. I'm sad it isn't a thing.

The methods I've found for shaking people is either getting them to lawn dart themselves via some really ballsy terrain level flying, and (not even joking) doing barrel rolls. Other then that your best defense is just avoiding the tail in the first place. Abuse BnZ as best you can and keep your speed up. Also, don't wander too far from even one or two friendlies unless the area you're hitting is really damn quiet.

Hugging the terrain works really well, as long as there's at least some variation in it. Gullies are fantastic. Actual cliffs don't seem to work as well (probably because vertical movement makes you expose too much).
The BnZ is one of the problems with the AB flight model. It's hard to apply your advantages when they're minimalized (like the Bf 109s not really climbing much faster than a spitfire). Sticking by people is the best option. It'd be nice if they didn't always try to go for the same person though. So many midair collisions with people not looking where they're going when 4 planes are tailing one enemy.
One of the most satisfying "shake the tail" maneuvers I've done is forcing an overshoot by killing speed in a climb. A lot of AB players jam on two buttons - SHOOTGUNS!! and WEP!! - without much concern for throttle, since it doesn't matter in like 95% of dogfights there. Go into a steep dive, then slam the elevators to climb and drop the throttle to zero; you both black out from high Gs and he doesn't see you slow down until it's too late.
Usually you'll get torn to shreds as they pass, so it's a last-ditch move. But occasionally they'll just sail by, helplessly wobbling back and forth in a stall as you nose over and bring home the dakka dakka. Their moment of "ruh roh!" realization is exquisite.

No, the tiers are cumulative

Into The White is on net flux also, and I really enjoyed it. They change the British names, but not the German names
Hi5 I watched that one next too.

Shooting down enemy planes in a German plane was painful.
On the upside, I am now level 4 with everyone except Japan who is level 3.
