Been working on my slow turns for BnZ. At really high speeds you can barely turn without the G warning coming up, gonna take some getting used to! Might have to somehow setup my desk so I can easily access both my joystick and mouse.
I'm still terrible at diving attacks, especially in HB. I'll line up on some poor mook, but have a bad angle by the time I reach him, and the controls lock up so I can't correct enough. Correcting to keep the proper angle as I dive in is where it tends to go to shit, and I should probably cut back my airspeed a bit, too.
Those RamJB videos have been helpful, especially seeing him actually perform energy fighter attacks in-game.

I find I'm coming out too far ahead of the pilot I'm after, so I end up cutting in at way too steep an angle to get any good shots off. Just gonna take practice I think!

Phew, this daily task was a clincher. Had to do about 7 missions to get it. Either I was on top and we lost, or we won but a few guys were ahead of me (mostly because I spent too much time chasing down bombers that were going after our ground stuff). Earlier tasks were all dependent on the player, this one has a luck factor (getting a competent enough team to win, but not good enough to be better than you :P ).
Glad to say, so far I'm 9 out of 9.

It's also incredibly hard to shake people in AB. Basically the only thing you have going for you is turning radius and (maybe slightly) climb speed. It really gives a huge advantage to the British planes and the (eventual) zeroes and hayabusas (...and basically all of the biplanes).
If there was actual HB with respawns I would play that all the time, but I too usually play AB.
The methods I've found for shaking people is either getting them to lawn dart themselves via some really ballsy terrain level flying, and (not even joking) doing barrel rolls. Other then that your best defense is just avoiding the tail in the first place. Abuse BnZ as best you can and keep your speed up. Also, don't wander too far from even one or two friendlies unless the area you're hitting is really damn quiet.
Hugging the terrain works really well, as long as there's at least some variation in it. Gullies are fantastic. Actual cliffs don't seem to work as well (probably because vertical movement makes you expose too much).
The BnZ is one of the problems with the AB flight model. It's hard to apply your advantages when they're minimalized (like the Bf 109s not really climbing much faster than a spitfire). Sticking by people is the best option. It'd be nice if they didn't always try to go for the same person though. So many midair collisions with people not looking where they're going when 4 planes are tailing one enemy.
Yeah, BnZ really isn't what it should be in arcade but it's still pretty effective in terms of just keeping your speed up. Most pilots won't try and chase someone who's hauling ass out of an engagement zone with a good amount of speed. Once you start hitting midtier and more planes are carrying big bore cannons staying at high speeds is even more important so BnZ is still worth learning to do.
Even though I still struggle with his accent, Ramjb's videos really helped improve my BnZ game. Seeing just how steep he made his zoom climbs until near stall speed surprised me.
+1

Ok, first daily challenge that is just plain impossible for me. No way I'd grind this amount of levels just to get to heavy bombers (closest is the ruskies from lvl7 to lvl11). And sure as hell I won't drop GEs on converting freeXP to get there.
Pretty sure they'll do a jet-only event before this series is over. I guess that's one way to sort out the most dedicated of the lot.

There are some screenshots floating around that indicate that this might be getting Star Conflict'd.
This does not sound like a good thing. Explain...?
Looks like they're changing the advancement system. The new tiering look interesting, but it looks like you need to unlock a certain amount of upgrades to advance to the next plane, and then unlock a certain amount of planes to advance to the next tier.
Not surprising seeing how fast you can burn through the tiers and damn near skip entire planes. This will serve to make sure that players get some more time in before they advance though will also serve to milk the impatient guys for money but whatever. This will fucking suck for new Germany players though.
The last thing the game needs is more grind. If people want to try different lines of planes from a nation, progression mechanics shouldn't force the issue.
That doesn't look like it would change the tiering at all really.
I don't really care, seeing as my stukas are ridiculously low tier. But it still seems like a dumb decision. Even World of Tanks is basically "One tank per class per tier with some cross-type unlocks". And they basically already have it set up that way (since you need to buy the preceeding plane model.
And it doesn't make much sense to play one tier 7 and 3 tier 2 planes usually unless you really want to be shot down (I mean, there are exceptions; I still use my tier 3 hurricane in tier 5 British stuff). But that layout seems to be pretty obviously just an inconvenience for people that do want fancier, higher-tier planes. Like, if my favorite plane were the Focke Wulf 190 I'd already be disappointed.

Well, that would screw over beginners, that's for sure. Good luck grinding out the reserve planes with everyone flying I-15s. It was hard enough to get past them in the current system, fighting hard for every kill against easy-mode ruskies.

I dunno how much that's really gonna change things, besides forcing you to fly shitty planes before you can bypass them - Ki-45 Tei, I'm looking at you - though that's definitely more grindy. Although I agree with Hmuda's point that it puts you into an extended period of getting beat up by better planes as you grind out the bottom half of a tier to get to the upper half.
That sucks a lot in American tier 6, from my experience, and British tier 8-11.
Will we have to unlock all of the sub-types for a given "cluster" of planes - like the P-39 - before moving down the list? Germans and Russians get like 5-6 of the same goddamn bomber in some cases.

I would assume that they're grouped like that for a reason, and they'd just count towards unlocking the next era. Which might be a bit generous.
Speaking of, I guess I might as well stop putting off buying those B-17s so I can just get those unlock credits.
Interesting, and I think those changes are for the best, overall. The biggest Chang I see is how they've collapsed the tier "pairs" into "ranks" and will match pilots within the rank instead of tiering you up or down. That should bring the "variance" of planes in a given match more into line with fairness, since it more tightly controls which planes could match up against each other. At least, I hope that's what happens.

Will read through the diary tomorrow, but the fact that they don't requre 100% research to unlock new planes is a good step. Also this 5-tiering idea might help matchmaking.

After that dev diary and some translated Q&A I'm a lot less ambivalent about the changes.
Plane and nation XP are gone as they are now, and from what I gather you spend research points as you get them.
Likewise as for the matchmaking, there's still some hidden tiering going on behind the eras, but they're also using it to let them balance things between the different modes. The example being the Airacobras, which dominate in AB but are pretty lacklustre in the other modes, and will be balanced accordingly.

Well, they said that if we concentrate on one branch, we'll get to the end much faster that we could in the current system. I guess they were sad to see jets being unused because of their insane grind requirement.
So far it's wait-and-see, sounds workable on paper but it's too much of a leap to judge right now.

That may be worth it just for the fact I'll be able to sit in my Stukas and eventually unlock Me-262s (presumably).
Not necessarily a fan of the forced research of parts the way it seems presented. If they're interchangeable between planes that'd help (not sure if they are), sort of like World of Tanks where different tier tanks may use the same engine or gun or suspension. Cause I'm pretty sure the bomb racks on my He-111 H1 fit on my He-111 H6. It'd be nice if they had a bit more variety in the actual upgrades and their historical analogue components instead of generic 'covers' and 'fuselage repair'.
You have to unlock three planes per rank/tier to reach the next one, and to get a new plane you have to have unlocked the one prior. From the looks of that tree, as long as you focus on two "lines," you can reach jets pretty quickly. You'd have to grind at the lower levels to get the research points for upgrades, but it's possible.
Kinda unrelated, but I saw an advert for WOWP on a terrestrial tv channel last night. The gf was weirded out by the slack jawed face I was modelling. Not because it's an amazing game (far from it by all accounts), but just the fact that a freemium game was being advertised on the tele.

That's craaazy. I always saw these F2P game companies like that dev team that (re)released Hellgate London; sort of scrappy, sort of shady, with no actual resources besides what they could squeeze out of premium content. TV commercials seem too...legit for that vision to be valid. Next you'll be telling me the companies aren't just buying drugs and prostitutes with the Golden Eagles proceeds. Madness!
If I see a League of Legends advert on the TV, my head will explode. Which probably isn't a long way off, considering how ridiculously successful and accessible that game is.

edit: oh, the dev diary is up
looks like premium planes count towards era unlocks, too.
edit: I think its implying that you don't need to actually fly a plane to unlock components for it, so there's that, at least.
