are you supposed to be able to talk to the people at the ruins? They just attack me on sight.
Nah, they're assholes.
Everyone in this game seems to be a big asshole lol. That's what I mean by my tone comment earlier, it's not just the companions. The tone of the game seems very salty, where as I remember BG1 and BG2 being more hopeful and joyful even though, you know, Lord of Murder.
At any rate, it's early access, I'm not going to kvetch over it too much. We'll see how it all shakes out in the end.

I'm hoping that between there being way more in this EA than the DOS2 EA at start and the speed at which they are updating means maybe this actually comes out sooner than the year away that is expected.
Day 3 of fixes! They're really cranking these out, huh?
So they're monitoring who made what in the character creator in Baldur's Gate 3
They used the analytics to put together an amalgamation of all those choices and see what people are most leaning towards
and it's....a very boring looking human man. They referred to it as the "Default vault dweller" and I am amused.
I made a human but I gave him a beard! And blue hair!
Human is the most popular D&D race by a pretty good margin so it's not terribly surprising the amalgamation would come up with that. More popular than tieflings by over three times.
And most people who play games with character customization in them are notoriously uncreative with them. As far as i've heard a lot just click past it all choosing defaults.

Congratulations, you’ve basically made the default Vault Dweller. What the hell guys. We gave you demon eyes, horns, and even tails. We are sorely disappointed.
To be fair I'm playing the default Wood Elf female.

A lot of the characters in the first zone are angry and scared. Also (early plot spoilers)
you could turn into an illithid at any second
There are a lot of hopeful, helpful people in the game though - but most folk are just folk and they sort of blend into the background. The monsters stand out to us.
Examples:
Gale (companion)
Wyll (companion, I guess, I've mainly just seen him fight)
The tiefling running the sanctuary in the glade
Shadowheart, once you get to know her a bit
...uh
...like probably the captured druid?
Nessa isn't really an asshole, she's just... aggressively pragmatic...
Look most of the tieflings aren't assholes
There's an incompetent tiefling you can help and he says thank you
The tiefling teaching the kids is nice!
I guess that one that drank poison and is trying to come down from a bad high in a storehouse is sort of an asshole
Shit there's also that tiefling that thinks he's going to apprentice under the next Elminster, that dude is an asshole
...most of the druids are assholes because they're being really shitty to people who just need help
Especially that one who lets a kid get murdered
Ugh fuck these druids, if I had a real bow I'd just murder all of them
My next character is going to be a Cleric of Bhaal
All the goblins are pretty must asshole personified
And most people who play games with character customization in them are notoriously uncreative with them. As far as i've heard a lot just click past it all choosing defaults.
I also think that people not familiar with D&D are more likely to gloss over race selection too, especially for the D&D specific races like tieflings and githyanki. Even a good chunk of D&D players may not be familiar with the latter.

Also they don't have dragonborn yet, so the game is completely invalid.
Oh, and give us goblin PCs! You have the character models, you cowards!

Are both types of Gyth available or just the asshole ones?

No githzerai.
Would have been a fun choice for a party with a Githyanki
are you supposed to be able to talk to the people at the ruins? They just attack me on sight.
Nah, they're assholes.
I punted that gnome over the ledge. Highlight of the day.
So tried that encounter twice to make sure that i didn't mess something out and not only can you punt the gnome, you can also shoot down a rock on a rope that's above the two guys killing them instantly. Not sure if there's a way to insta kill the mage, so I just had my giant spider jump in their face.

I just talked to them and convinced them they didn't want to die, so off they went.

Larian believes they have been making D&D-based games inspired by Baldur's Gate since the very beginning. I doubt they care about copying its writing "tone" more in this game any more than they have in their past. It's more like the BG license is just making what they've done all along official.

I don't know? I walked up there, clicked to read the plaque on the statue and got interrupted by the little feller demanding we shove off because the wreck was his. I changed his mind, they all left. Then I shot down the rock and broke into the crypt.

5E kind of makes this problem worse in tabletop by making Variant Human arguably the best race in the game mechanically too. Half the time I make a character I stop and think they would be better with a free feat.
I am enjoying failing forwards a lot more than I did in DOS2. Even if things go badly, it isn't TOO bad. Or at least I feel like it is interesting and believable that sometimes people make bad decisions.
I am kind of mad about charm person though. I cast it on someone I was talking to and they immediately jumped into combat. Which okay, yeah, not a nice thing to do, but they failed their save?
Persuasion feels a little overly strong/useful so far as well. Strength and wisdom are getting short shrift ~2 hours in. I hope the game opens up the exploration pillar a lot more than Divinity ever did, they leaned on mandatory teleport a lot.
I made a female Drow warlock, but after two minutes on the beach my game consistently crashes so I'll sit back and wait for some more fixes.
Try updating video card drivers?
All drivers totally up to date. I'm not that fussed anyway - I'm supposed to be prepping for two separate games of real D&D and this has been a distraction!

Try switching from Vulkan to DirectX11 (or vice-versa)?

I can't really blame Wizards for making humans mechanically strong. A lot of new players are going to go with human for something at least a little familiar and probably not make optimal choices with their build.
I rolled a Warlock and 90% of my turns are eldritch blast. I have a fighter, 95% of her turns are a standard attack. Same with the cleric. The Rogue at least can sneak attack.
Every time I try and do something clever the game says "nuh uh, that's not what's supposed to happen". It's a terrible GM. An example: I see a switch that opens the spider cage, so I use mage hand to remotely switch it... but I can't, because mage hand can't flip switches. I need to take out a tough target so I set up an ambush... and as soon as it starts monsters teleport right next to my ambushers. I succeed on a deception roll to convince someone of the false location of a camp... and she says "no, it's not there I checked". It's bad. I wish it weren't bad, or that it was even average, but right now... it's terrible.
Yeah... Welcome to DND.
Play the OG BG as a wizard for a great trip down memory lane before you had default actions and could cast a magic missile once a day.
i always used to get the magic sling bullets then make a bee line to the worgs or whatever and kite them around to get level 3 asap by abusing their bad ai and huge xp reward
true Gameplay
My favorite was loading up a level 1 Mage with Protection from Petrification spells, going to the basilisk area, and using that to dart-kite basilisks around for massive xp, and then going to the Ankheg area and switching to Sleep to get to the level cap.

Have they announced what other classes are going to be in? I definitely want to check out Paladin, Sorcerer, and Monk. Also Bard. Druid I can take or leave.
Barbarian, Bard, Druid, Monk, Paladin, and Sorcerer are expected for launch.
Wait is the game not launching with all the base classes? That feels weird.

Especially since almost every race gets at least 2 subrace options.
