The magic sauce is the looting. They really nailed it in BL 1. You can be struggling along, hiding and sniping and inching forward and then find a new gun that just opens the whoopass barn door and suddenly you are plunging into mobs and ramboing it up for a couple levels. So in that sense it's got the one-more-chest appeal of Diablo with solid shooting, some fantastic writing and characterization (no worthwhile plot to speak of, though), and light RPG skilltree elements.
BL2 is a different story. Hours 5-25 are fantastic, but I'm definitely more sympathetic to folks who didn't enjoy SP there, especially because the game is so absurdly stingy with purple and orange drops. Great game, and my cup of tea, obv. But not as pure a tap on some neural joy center as BL.
I could not have put it better. I came as near to 100%-ing Borderlands 1 as one can solo (some silly goose put multi-player achievements in there), all without ever connecting to a server. Also, the General Knox DLC may be the best piece of DLC for anything, ever. Be warned though: the game does start slow. There's a few "kill five of these" quests before you get to the gold.
Borderlands 2 still has the same great style, the same sense of humour, etc. but for single player it just lacks something. I wanted to love it, but I dropped the second play-through because it just wasn't holding my attention.
I'm torn by this GetLoadedGo deal. On the one hand, I keep meaning to pick up Shogun 2/Fall of the Samurai. On the other hand, Civ V GOTY is, Mrs. Croaker assures me, very good. But the GOTY doesn't have Gods and Kings.
On the other hand, it's possible that the Sale will push out all of these items on daily - Civ V and Shogun 2 seem to pop up a lot.
On the other hand, £10...
Think I'll have a cup of tea, go to dinner, and try and decide after that.
Just as a note amazon has a great deal on Civ V for $19.99 linky
It includes:
Sid Meier's Civilization V: Game of the Year Edition
Sid Meier's Civilization V: Gods and Kings
Sid Meiers Civilization IV: The Complete Edition
The Stronghold Collection
I leave for one afternoon and you guys manage to rack up 580+ posts. True Winter-sale style!
I got I am Alive, on pure recommendation from a friend, suggesting that if I liked the jumping puzzles in Uncharted then I should be prepared to be blown away.
Thread is moving pretty fast, so I'm not sure whether this has been mentioned. Hitman: Absolution for $19.99 on Amazon.com, activates on Steam. Link. Beats Steam's sale by $5.
@joshgotro No idea what happened. Apparently it wound up back in my Gift inventory? Glad you still got it!
Also, last night @Spoit hit me with the Monkey Island Bundle, and @BrocksMullet classbombed me this morning with a copy of PoP2008!
Thanks a bunch, guys! Hopefully I'll be able to keep returning the favors for a bit. Making a trip to Best Buy later to stock up on another $20 thanks to some Reward Zone points.

the alan wake pack is very much worth it. wait for it to hit a daily/flash though, it was $10 in the last 2 sales and likely will be again
Another dumb question (forgive me, but I'm new to the gifting thing): If I were to buy the Orcs Must Die! franchise, which is on sale right now, since I already have Orcs Must Die!, could I then gift that to someone?

Unfortunately, no. Most bundles won't give you an extra copy of something you own. There are exceptions, mostly for Valve stuff like Orange Box.

Yeah, Steam will say "you already own this" and give you a "buy as gift" link instead of "buy"
I Am Alive. I feel like I have heard good things about this. True/false?

I think the general rule is that you just don't get anything you have already. I think thats really stupid since you're paying for that product anyway, but thats how they roll I guess.
sorrry, no.
unless it explicitly says on the store page that you get extras as gifts, the extra copies just get wasted.
there's only a small handful of packs that let you keep the extras, with the orange box being the only really notable one
OMD1 is a ton of fun. It looks like I have 36 hrs played and I am close to 100%ing it and its DLC. You could probably complete the main campaign on normal difficulty in about 8 hrs. It has a demo, which you should try.
Dunno about OMD2, I'm not going to start on it until I'm done with OMD1.

Yeah not a fan of that game, its ok but for the 7 hours it gives you it gets a bit drawn out. At least in Uncharted its entertaining, in I am Alive its meh.
I will second the Borderlands solo love - and, thanks to Figgy setting up a four pack, I hope to experience it again in bL2
As Iolo said, it really is about getting That One Really Neat gun. In my case, it was a revolver with a scope so accurate that I could shoot mutants from the next game over.
Which technically was Blade Kitten, exposing perhaps that I shouldn't be relied upon to recommend games and I'll just stop talking.

Orcs Must Die is a hybrid tower defense/orc meat grinder simulator. You use a mix of traps and spells/abilities to defeat waves of ... Orcs. You choose which items to level and there is a ton of content.
Between steam and amazon I picked up Borderlands 2 and Darksiders I/II + all DLC and the season pass for $40 today. Tis the season indeed.

So, yeah, I am Alive looks pretty cool.
I am on the fence. Trying to save all of my money until far cry goes on sale.
But IAA may not be cheaper than this.
Hrrrrk. Indecision.
Dear Newell, if you are going to email me about a game from my wishlist is on sale under the list of which ones just put "all"
@cardboard delusions smacked me in the face with The Secret Of Monkey Island bundle this morning, a mere few hours after I added it to my wishlist so I could remember to buy it today. He must of sensed my shame for never having played it, instead always turning to the cold embrace of Grim Fandango.
@Fredz89 I sent you a friend request on Steam. Once you purchase BL1 (I don't have 2) let's play sometime. I would really enjoy getting to play this online since when I got it no one was playing it anymore.

Regretfully, this. BL2 adds tons more story, tons more character (including a bad guy you'll love to hate), but the gameplay has... issues, especially in the second playthrough. I expect I'll end up playing it once through (if that) on every character, and done. (And this from someone who, like the above posters, played and loved BL (1) solo.)
So I just heard back from my "Play All The Steam Games" buddy. I've sent Bad Rats, a HiB code with Super Meat Boy, Lone Surviror and Briad, and then Binding of Isaac. I just got a facebook message. "I hate you"
Does anyone expect Torchlight II to go lower than 50%?
It hit for 50% off on Thanksgiving I think at 9.99 so it is possible but unlikely.
It's only been out for a few months and I really don't see it hitting $5 yet.
I was thinking they would maybe do like a torchlight franchise pack to hit between that 5-10 mark for torchlight 2, but it doesn't seem to be the case. Both games are rather good, though.
Torchlight I was mostly going down one huge dungeon. Torchlight II has you going to several dungeons across a huge map that are not as deep
As promised, gift sent the morning after. Heh. And @Thetheroo is the lucky winner! Good luck not starving!
Edit: Also, I went on a bit of a friending spree yesterday, but I only got through about two pages before it became too hard to track who I'd sent the invites to. So anyone I missed, feel free to add me on Steam: abotkin
Nicccceeee.
Thanks a bunch for your generosity. I'm looking forward to checking this game out.

ANYWAY,
you are a robot that can transport into a plane playing against another of the same thing. You have a main base that you can make little dudes in, and set them to attack enemy base, capture intermediary bases, sit still and provide defense, etc. Basically you can't make it to the other base with how much fuel you have, so you capture intermediary bases to help build more dudes and repair/refuel.
Win when you blow the hell out of his main base.
It is a fun little RTS type game, and worth a look.
@InkSplat has kindly gifted me Defenders Quest. I am intrigued by a game that describes itself as FFT with tower defense. What class, thank you much.
I really enjoyed the game. The writing is funny and sharp, and the classes have some nice variety that allows you to mix up how you play the levels.
Also, an awesome thing is you can alter the amount of XP/Gold you get per fight in the options menu, without disabling achievements or anything. So, if you like the grind, you can do that to beat the higher challenges. If you don't, you can set things to 300% and just do a single run-through of the whole thing.
