It occurred to me last night how ironic is it that, while "Gamers" bitched about the Wii only outputting a 480p signal, I sense a majority of players having no qualms with playing on the Gamepad screen...which is 480p, essentially.
As usual there is no telling who was talking about what at what time. It's not like all of these people used to say this, and now they say this. And I've seen plenty of people complain about the idea of looking at a 480p screen, while others defend it on the size basis which is legitimate based on studies about what the human eye can appreciate.
I would have to guess that pixel density is the reason we haven't heard too much bitching about the game pad resolution.
So New Year's Eve was another day of 5 player NintendoLand. And another day of converting non-Wii U buyers into Wii U buyers. I've said it already, but I'll say it again: NintendoLand is a better showcase for the Wii U than Wii Sports was for the Wii.
Also, a pink squirrel full of candy is the best thing ever.

I'm kind of torn regarding gamepad only play. On one hand, it's extremely awesome being able to steam full quality console titles to the gamepad so you can play them anywhere you want. On the other hand, after seeing what ZombiU does to push the gameplay possibilities forward at the expense of being able to stream it, it makes me wonder how well these other games are really making use of the gamepad.

It really depends on the game. For ports of existing games, I can understand why most developers wouldn't want to really use the gamepad. For exlusive games, then yeah, they should at least try to use it in creative ways. Though I do like at least having an option to play on the gamepad only, since it's just soooo nice.

I fear that publishers will more and more opt to allow for gamepad only play. While this is great for those with kids and a limited number of TVs, it really stymies new gameplay experiences.

I hope to see a mix of both, but that might take too many resources.
Also, since getting a damned nice TV, I've noticed the gamepad screen's resolution not being up to snuff a bit more. It's still perfectly serviceable and awesome.. but this is also the first TV I've owned in 4 years that isn't a small 4:3 POS.
My gaming crew unlocked stages 4 and 5 of Luigi's Mansion last night. 5 can FUCK THE HELL OFF. 4's pretty bad too, but...
For those that don't know the gimmicks:
4 is handicapped to favor the ghost. Littered around the stage are statues that will shake and rattle when you are in sight of them - and will cause your controller to vibrate extremely fiercely, ruining your ability to feel the ghost. You can kill the statues with the light, but they'll come back eventually and it takes a lot of light.
5 is handicapped in favor of the ghostbusters. It is on the rooftop so lightning bolts illuminate the entire play stage, and there are NO obstacles in the room - only spinning Monitas that shine their lights as if you were in a game with less than 5 players. The lights on the top of the monitas will also turn yellow/red based on proximity. But with no walls, there's no chokepoints.

Wait, there's more than three stages for the Luigi's Mansion minigame? How do you unlock them, stamps? Are there more than 3 for Mario/more than 2 for Animal Crossing as well?
This is important news!

Just keep playing for Luigi's.
There's supposedly more of everything if you are good enough. I just don't know what it takes - for instance, I beat Donkey Kong Crash Course and got the star, but still haven't seen the second level of that.
I got a WiiU as a Christmas/Birthday present from my wife, because she is awesome.
ZombiU is fantastic. Haven't had a lot of time to play it yet (only an hour and a half'ish in), but I'm really enjoying that, Super Mario Bros and Nintendoland. The latter is a lot better than I was expecting, and we've had a lot of fun playing some of the versus games with my family.

I've said it before: The ONLY gripe I have with Nintendoland is that there isn't more game. And you know a game is good if all you want is more of exactly the same!
Also I wish there was a Mario Party style handicap mode. I usually play this with my family and they're quite frank terrible at videogames, and even if I'd let them win they'd notice and it'd be no fun. I wish at the start of a train-ride you could select which player gets a handicap, a certain ammount of free coins at the beginning, and how many.
Miiverse was alot better. I was sure I was trying to add the right person that way. This is a pretty neat console :^:
Now that I have everything all setup on my WiiU, Im gonna go play... Super Mario World :rotate:

As Rorus quoted in the OP (as I wrote it and asked it to be added), the Friend Code adding is for people who want the old, Wii-style friend codes. This allows you to add people through a mutual shared secret, even with Miiverse disabled.
Miiverse is like live or Facebook - search a name, send an invite. Much easier, much less secure. And by far the preferred method.
Edit: I just found myself kind of wishing this forum had "Yeah" style up-voting. I mean, Awesome and Agree are useful, but the inflections in the Miiverse "Yeah...?" kinda would be awesome to have too. Ah well. A man can dream. At least, until Tube beats one down with a scabbard.

It is indeed much better, but they need to revamp how the process works. As it is, it's not very intuitive to add friends by going into Miiverse settings, searching for a user, and then finally sending a request. They should make both methods readily available and obvious right from the friends menu, where you would normally expect it be. Or just take out the "swap names" approach that the friend codes used altogether, because seriously, does ANYONE use this method?

Parents who use parental controls but still want their kids to be able to play with other kids.
This is likely Nintendo's reasoning; remember that Miiverse is fully parental control integrated, and I think turning on those parental controls disables the friend request features.

Oh, also, picked up Assassin's Creed 3 today, putting my Wii U game count at 8 total, including Trine 2 and Chasing Aurora (which I'm kind of regretting). This is my first AC game, so we'll see how it goes. While I was there, I noticed a copy of Xenoblade Chronicles sitting there on the shelf all lonely, and after all the hype I've heard about it here and elsewhere, I had to get it. My wallet is screaming out in anguish.
Man... the gamepad battery doesn't seem to hold a charge for very long.
Also, its very strange to see so much pleasant/friendly people and posts online on a console...
Also also, people are good at drawing... for real.

Hit the home button, then Controller settings. What brightness is your gamepad at, and do you have battery saver on? Ican usually get mine to last a night of play.

Even more possible if you keep the charging stand near by and every time you get up to use the bathroom, or get a drink/food, or otherwise set the GamePad down you put it on the charger.
I am debating myself, trying to decide if I should wait to get a WiiU. On the one hand I haven't seen anything that I'd consider a must-have title; there are some really rad looking games, like ZombiU, but nothing that makes me feel the way I felt when the Wii first arrived. On the other hand I like to buy first generation hardware because there's a chance that later revisions will have fewer features and be locked down even tighter. However unlikely it is, I'd hate to lose Wii BC because of cost or because they want to stop folks from running homebrew in Wii mode.
I want to find a copy of Xenoblade, but good god it's hard to track down here.
I might have to go online.
I thought it'd be hard to find here too, but then I went into an EB right next to my house and literally saw five of them on the shelf--three new, two used. I'd already paid $80 for a sealed copy at a very expensive, locally owned brick and mortar shop though. I justified it by telling myself that I was supporting a local business. This was maybe three weeks ago.
Hey all! So I have had a Wii U for bit now and I really dig it, despite a few hiccups I hope will be adressed( Why the 3DS could handle eshop DSiWare transition/launching DS games from the main menu and Wii U can't pull off the equivalent actions for Wii I'm not sure) . I have NSMB U, NintendoLand, and ZombiiU. Most of my time has been spent messing about in MiiVerse though. I just love the sketch Twitter nature of it and it gives me an excuse to flex my artistic chops every other day or so.
My NNid is "Dasherino" if you want to friend or follow my stuff. Not playing anything online at the moment so I won't be much fun there but thats not what this is about. I needs those sweet sweet "Yeahs!"...
I'll add you when I'm on the WiiU next time, but what on earth do the "Yeahs!" do?
"Yeah!" = "Like!"
Yeah it does jack all, but there is a total of yeahs at the top of your profile. I could go back to my Jr. High online forum days and celebrate the amount of yeahs I get! =P I actually find Yeahs more interesting too due to the possible inflections and the fact that near everything posted is something someone had to take time to create. Beats the heck out of Instagram photos of peoples' unremarkable breakfast.
Came across a couple issues I'm hoping fellow Wii U owners have answers to... Must every profile used in NintendoLand be linked to a Nintendo Network account? I pre-loaded a bunch of Miis off of my 3DS so my family could play as themselves when I bought it over but only the guest Miis showed up on the character select cards. And I am looking at playing some brand new Wii games on the Wii U instead. When I transfer over my Wii data later will the two merge much like how it can add data from two Wii consoles and combine them? I see no reason to right now, as porting it over to Wii Emulation support with less features(namely no GC controller support) doesn't sound that tempting.

You need to have your Mii's as "Favorites" in order for save data to be created for them. Nintendoland ties its saves to those on an individual level, unlike say Super Mario Bros U, which ties its save to your primary profile.
Nintendo claims that transferring from two consoles will merge them, but if there is any duplicate data the info from the last console you transfer will win (basically overwriting the content from the first).
I hope that eventually we'll be able to use our NNIDs on other WiiU's. My friend came over to play NSMB and we tried to import his NNID but it said it was already activated on another console.
I'm assuming that we will eventually be able to do that since there is an option to type in the user/pass for the NNID to get the profile but it just isn't activated yet.
Someone named "ValRage" was online last night... Who was that? I was trying to invite them to my game but I'm sure that they were in the middle of playing when the invite was sent.

Anyone here playing AC3 online at all? I tried for about 15 minutes last night but could not find a single match. Pretty disheartening. A little variety from BO2 would be nice.

I did and I couldn't find a match either. However I did play some Wolfpack mode solo which can be fun and lets you level online and open up their multiplayer story. You just have to start a private game and join it by yourself.
