Whoohoooo!! 5 stars in NSMBU! Not sparkly or whatever because I did see the ! block a few times, but damn does that make me feel good!
I take it they did that easy mode that mars your save again?
I've heard conflicting reports. I believe that they won't punish you if you don't use the !. But I don't know. My stars are gold but not sparkly, but I don't know if that matters.
I think I made it roughly 30 seconds into the ZombieU Demo. I saw a dot on the radar, very nearby. When I looked in the distance to where the zombie should be, I just saw a window and nothing else. I said Fuck This I Don't Need This Stress and that was the end of my experience with ZombieU.
Yeah, I don't do horror games.
Well, I beat Resident Evil 2 on the N64, but all those cheat codes were available so

It was probably a rat. It's a motion detector, not a zombie detector.
ZombiU is actually super scary and stressful though. My friend says he probably won't play it without somebody as a wingman (i.e. me) to keep an eye on the screen when using the pad and noticing other stuff off in the distance.

I've heard it gets repetitive fast though.

I think it only gets repetitive because you go out and do stuff over and over to build your characters back up whenever you die. For example, I finally lost my 5k point guy (thought he was 6k, sorry, I lied apparently) last night to the worst kinds of people: (spoiler for enemy type in game, don't click unless you been to the tower of london)
exploding zombie fuckfaces
and had to restart...well, you know what that means? I'm going to have to go and RETRAIN all my weapon skills back up, which will take me hours. Additionally, if you're cautious like I am, then you're going to BRISTLE with ammunition when you go to a new area, which means there is a lot of staring at your CCTV and going into old areas to pick up ammunition, and hoping to find infected survivors with phat lewts. It can be repetitive, sure, but if you play just story-line...you'll die a lot, but it won't be so repetitive.

I can't get it to work quite right with TiVo (as in, actually changing channels on TiVo and not my TV). I found something that sort of kind of tricks it into working, but it works like shit. I'm hoping when they implement actual TiVo stuff it will work better.
ZombiU was harsh to me last night. After about 1 hour of playing, 1 death behind me, I clear the supermarket and head back, feeling confident. I die... Upon waking at the safe house, I am thrown right into the next mission. I couldn't get back to my zombified self to recover 3 medkits, 2 full stacks of ammo, 2 stacks of boards, and various other supplies. I'm expected to fight off an impending hoard with my cricket bat and 6 rounds of pistol ammo... which goes poorly.
Demon Souls indeed. I love it. Normally I hate console FPS, and I do find myself fighting the controls sometimes, but the overall experience just feels so good. Its a great use of the WiiU Gamepad.
I never found ZombiU to be particularly difficult. I only died twice, and both times were due to glitches.
You just need to always make sure there's an escape route behind you if you need to cut it and run.
What sucked is I didn't realize how much ammo there is into the game until I was almost at the end. I was being as conservative as possible when in reality you don't need to be.

They were both fun, MH seems like I would really enjoy it, but it may have actually sold me on getting it for the 3DS once I have the cash built up to rebuy one. ZombiU was great, but I think it's not a full retail purchase for me. The digital sale is tempting though. It was fun and tense but I can't play it off screen so I can't play it when the kid is a awake and it seems like a game I might regret dropping $60 on later on when better, non-launch titles come along.
Nintendoland continues to impress me though. The octopus game is the only one that I think is sort of weak, otherwise they are all great.
Hehe. Reminds me of the first time I played through the first few levels. Patted myself on the back for surviving the tutorial and the tube station only to be eaten by literally the very first zombie I met upon reaching the surface. Wasn't overwhelming odds or anything, I just died like a chump.

Is Xenoblade really 60+ hours long just to beat it? I played it for a bit, and thought it was cool, but there was no way in hell I was going to invest that much time into it. I would be excited about the WiiU game if I thought I could beat it in 35 hours or less.

You, sir, are a way more skilled player than I am and I am jealous :P. I am absolutely cautious, and make sure I get escape routes, and I'm so conservative that I'm...like the Pope or something. I absolutely abuse the Flare+Molotov combination, since those things are like candy in the world, but when business gets business...yeah kinda fail hehe. I'm thankful to be only on my 8th survivor so far, and heading to the Tower of London. A man of my lack of skills can be truthfully proud of such an achievement, considering I probably should be somewhere around 20 or so.
My worst thing is that I'm not cool-headed enough. When I hear them zombies, and see three or four silhouettes heading towards me, my mind just panics. Escape route? yep Three Flares and five Molotovs? yep 30 rounds in pistol, 8 shotgun shells? yep Die while standing there mouth agape while three zombies chew at me cause I backed up into a corner? indeed

God I can't wait until the new Xeno game comes out for Wii U. I wonder when it'll be. Surely not for a while.
Depends on how long it's been in development. It'll certainly take time to come west.
Well, if they started development fairly soon after finishing Xenoblade (remember, it came out in June 2010 in Japan) it might not be that long till we see it. They did show some actual gameplay in the trailer already. If I was being extremely optimistic, I'd say we could get it at the end of this year..but definitely sometime in 2014.
And it's definitely coming out in the west, they've shown it in the EU and US Nintendo Direct.

I've been playing it on and off since last year. It's a well enough structured game that you don't feel like you can't do that. One thing is that the only quests you really NEED to do if you don't want to lose them are marked. So just do those. Or race to the end, I suppose. But the quests help you level up faster which makes battles go faster which makes the game shorter. Also as you get used to all of the battle systems battles become more fun and for the middle section of the game you'll find yourself getting into battles for... for fun!
Although I don't like the battle system as much as I enjoyed The Last Story's. But they are different beasts. TLS is more about taking your typical turned based system, turning it toward an action RPG setup, and then simplifying and refining the hell out of it. Xenoblade's I felt was more stat porn. Get your skills set certain ways among different characters so you get quick kills and chained status effects. Lots of numbers flashing on screen. They also made it real time/actiony, but it's only so they can have more craziness happening at once.

When I died, the objective was to return to the safe house and trigger the next story segment. By dying, and waking up in the safe house, I automatically triggered the story segment which locked the gate to the shortcut tunnel.
Yeah, it was a great loss of equipment. By the time I defeated all the zombies necessary to unlock the gate, I had died plenty of times since losing all that equipment. I went back and checked for my zombie self anyways, but the place was empty.

The first time I lost my gear was when my guy died in a bunch of others that just KEPT COMING. I killed a few and started looting cause there were no bleeps or bloops, then, as I'm collecting I do the radar and get three bloops. When I went back for him, I didn't have enough in me to take him out and the others around him. Was sad. Now I have a badass weapon that allows me to pick everyone off from a distance without any worry. So I've been lucky in getting all my shit back. The last death would have destroyed me if I didn't get my stuff back:
fully upgraded crossbow, silenced pistol, and craptons of ammunition for crossbow, pistol, shotgun, mines, grenades, and molotovs
I would probably have teared up. Wife was pretty sympathetic too, but when I realized that my guy didn't even resurrect
can't resurrect if you have no head, apparently
everything was better!

Sometimes I feel like games like Xenoblade and Monster Hunter are just too hardcore for me. I'm sure the die-hards would cringe at the suggestion, but I'd like to see more "casual" modes. Reducing encounter rates, increasing XP/loot drops. Make the main character wear a pink ribbon and call it pussy mode so the "true" fans of the series can look down their noses at me.
My most tragic (and stupid on my part) death came in Buckingham when:
you're going through the walls after having collected the book from that office. You come up to a gate that is a shortcut back, but in the corner hidden from view is a zombie. Got me from behind the first time, but because I didn't see where he came from, I thought the chiming of the clock in the office was attracting zombies, so I cautiously approached the office again and, finding nothing moved at speed back to my former self only to get jumped from behind again. When I figured out where that blasted zombie was, my rifle and all my stuff was just gone. Tragic. And dumb.

Monster Hunter is pretty "hardcore". Xenoblade is definitely easy to pick up and play, it just takes some getting used to. Most of the default character builds will get you to the end of the game, and there's a heck of a lot of loot. There's no real grinding necessary unless you want to do so.

I go back and forth on this not just for this game, but other traditionally "hardcore hard" games like Dark Souls and Ninja Gaiden. I want everyone to experience games I love, but in the case of some (especially Souls games) the difficulty is meant to further illustrate themes in the setting. If that difficulty could be removed, it would be detrimental to the presentation of the world to the player. I suspect the same could be true for monster hunter. I think for games like Ninja Gaiden, DMC or Bayonetta whose difficulty is due to trying to present action as fast and furious the difficulty can be nerfed without killing the experience. Just a few rambly thoughts from a guy who spends altogether too much time contemplating such questions.

The I got to the supermarket, triggered an alarm, panicked and tried to run back,
Can't escape that way...
Tried to circle back around a van, managed to close the door instead of going through it first.
Panicked some more.
Tried to beat off 7 zombies with a cricket bat.
Realized that was a losing battle so I pulled out my gun with 6 shots and fired 4 of them into one zombie.
Welp.
Woke up as a woman in a bed somewhere and turned off the game. I'll give it another go when I have some hours ahead of me to tackle it
