Even your models of Gabe and Tycho look wrong. The rest are great.
I don't think Gabe and Tycho translate into 3 dimensions very well.
I have to agree with AbsoluteZero, specifically his last sentence. At the same time I will tip my hat to Gabe, because I did notice it was a different style being used for the game. And yet within the given style, the "anatomy" of the 3D characters seems to be... lacking somehow. In fact, now that I look at them, they seem to skew and bow unusually. They are kind of like gumby, when a character who is supposed to be a "simian brawler" should not be soft. Therefore, it needs more geometry, realworld geometry. That is why I am wondering if 3D clay models were created for each character before the 3D creation via computer. If not, then wouldn't that need multiple drawings of each character to get the full 3D comprehension of these 2D characters? I am currently taking a figure modeling class, and a similar question came up in the class. A friend of mine asked how many photos are needed in order to get a decent understanding of the 3D figure. If I remember correctly, the response was one picture at about every 4 degrees. If you take into account of the multiple axises needed for action sequences, etc., this seems like too much. However, it still seems that the drawing required, even though it would be less than 90 per character per axis, would be overkill. This is where the use of 3D clay modeling comes in. Clay models created from a handful of drawings, say storyboards, would replace the mountain of study drawings of each character. Of course, each model would need to be O.K.ed by the PA crew before computer production took place. I mean, if you really want something great, does it not take that much effort to create it? And yes, I know this all takes money, so if money is the problem, then we'll just get what the budget can pay for.

Hey, look! It's Public Broadcasting, we're going to learn something!
I'd play the game for $20, ugly baby or not. Mostly because I think Gabe is hawt with the zig-zag chest hair, that's just totally cool.
Those who are arguing about the style change, you have to look at the game in a different light. There is nothing in PA that could really translate into a video game, it's more like the guys from PA are all grown up and heading out on an adventure... at least that's what I got out of the trailers.
Gabe and Tycho are in quite the pressured position right now. The hype for this game (based upon their internet fandom) is so insane that I think it would be hard to live up to much of the expectations people have for the project.
Regardless as to whether this game comes around later in development (once it has actually taken on a form even remotely close to the final product) I will still buy it because I figure it's a small price to pay for years and years of great content from Penny-Arcade.
I still remain highly optimistic though. There's a great brain-trust working on this project and I think they are more than capable of bringing life to this incredibly bold venture.
It reminded me of the homebrew games on websites that were created on a lark. But these guys will probably polish it up before the release. They said it was early, so how good can it get? The celing's pretty high.

No. I really don't think there's that much hype. I think there's an expectation that it be something above average, considering the source of the game. More of a "This better be a great game!" rather than "Oh my god this game is going to be the best thing since sliced bullet time!"
Sweet hot god, the new trailer was amazing. Gabe wasn't kidding when he said the models we saw a few months ago weren't "done". The game looks amazing now.
I was also lollin' at the "enjoy spectacular cutscenes in 2D!" bit. Great dig on the entire industry. (Especially since the cutscenes look like they'll be better than most other games anyway.)
I'm really glad that people are finally seeing this new trailer. We are all very proud of how far the game has come. Trust me, if you can see it in HD and widescreen and not on Youtube it looks even cooler.
If I can get my hands on higher-rez versions of both trailers I may try to take screens of the old and new models, just for comparison. The differences are stunning, especially in the animation.
Fantastic trailer guys. Honestly what got me the most excited about it was how the music conveyed the feeling of the game. I watched the trailer the first time through and the sound wasn't working. It was cool, but just in a fanboi kinda way. But once I got the sound going, it made all the difference. If you (or Hothead) is going for a Danny Elfman's Beetlejuice style, they hit it real damn close. I can't wait to play now!
The trailer looks good. I can't wait for the game. However, I noticed that on the character creation screen there doesn't seem to be any setting for skin color. I wonder if this on some other screen? Since you can change the gender of the character it would seem odd not to be able to change the skin color.

This has been answered on the Hothead (Questions for Dev) thread but essentially, there are a lot more options going in including skin color.

That would be some hot shit right there. Totally old-school LucasArts-style, right?

Opinion officially almost certainly changed... potentially.

And BLOOD! Wooo!

I made that word up.

Any doubts I had about the game were completely erased by the new trailer.

The make-your-own-character is pretty pimp, from the small collection of parts I saw.
The Fruit Fucker, as always, was divine ^_^
Gabe needs more of the cell shading. He was pretty flat compared with Tycho.
I eagerly await the day I can have Gabe punch a mime.
I loved the new Trailer. The last trailer had me a little bummed out, but this one more than made up for it.
I am sold already, that was amazing.
Thank you.
