Am I wrong, or is it supposed to be "apprentice samurai" not "a prentice samurai"?

It's an actual word, I assume, since it's used over and over. Probably a medieval variant.

Prentice is the archaic form of apprentice. So it's the equivalent of spelling shop shoppe, only no one knows about it so instead of looking like you're using appropriate terminology it looks like you can't spell.

Tri-Optimum reminds you that there are only one-hundred-sixty-three shopping days until Christmas. Just 1 extra work cycle twice a week will give you the spending money you need to make this holiday a very special one.

prentice is an antiquated term for apprentice.

I know it might be too early to tell yet, but how does this new game stack up against the recent Devil Survivor series? Those were the first two SMT games I ever played, and they are pretty great. In fact, the greatness of Devil Survivor is what sparked my interest in the Persona series and got me to buy all 4 Persona games on my vita. I started with Persona 2 (randomly) and it has also been pretty great, although I haven't finished it yet.

I probably lucked into recruiting my first demon somehow

I wonder if there will come a point in the game where I get some kind of hint about a demon's personality

So from what I've gathered armor doesn't actually increase defense but rather just augments certain stats while the upper body armor determines the hero's (let's just call him Flynn, his default name) resistances.

For example, the Flynn's starting armor gives him weakness to fire, resistance to frost, and nullifies light. Whereas the Mikado Black armor for sale at the blacksmith changes it to make him resistant to Lightning attacks, weak to Force attacks, but still nullifies Light attacks. Other armor pieces/accessories seem to simply affect either the base stats, HP and MP, or some other effect.

Probably common knowledge to a lot of people here, but thought I'd share my observations ;)

There is not one damn second from the moment I looked at the cover to where I am now in the game that I have not felt such an overt BL manga vibe from this game. Especially how the game is arranged. Primarily male cast, with the one token female character that's written off to the side every chance that comes up.

Doesn't even have to be a demon in the fight. He called a Gryphon up out of nowhere.

I'm sure she'll get her chance to shine. Bear in mind they're taking a LOT of themes from the earlier SMT games, specifically the first one. In the first SMT game it was you and the two dudes you shared dreams with, and then you meet up irl and go kick some demon butt until you find the main female character who is basically like "hey I exist too". I'm not expecting some 'destined to be together' thing like what SMT had for it's plot between the Hero and Heroine, but I wouldn't be surprised if something happened.

I came close to dying once or twice in the tutorial. Hell, I didn't even get a demon with Dia until my 3rd trip (the second trip nearly ended in disaster). And now I got several skills attached to Flynn, who so far has a "whatever" build, which is usually how I start off in SMT games until a bit later, and he has a Gun skill, Zio, Bufu, Dia, and a rather weak, though effective status effect inducing Phys skill. So yeah not too shabby so far.

I'm just going to say, again, that the tutorial dungeon is the hardest part of the game and the difficulty just continues to plummet and an hour or two into Tokyo everything is easy mode forever. But maybe it was just me putting all my application points into unlocking skill slots and having all my demons (and main character) with pretty much the exact same skills.

By the way, the high crit low hit physicals have a much higher hit rate than you'd think and are pretty good (this being the press turn system and all). Just saying.

I'm probably gonna make a dex/mag build with use of agi and a bit of luck on the side. I'll use strength as a dump and play by ear.

    Stats are

Power: Melee, SLIGHTLY affects physical skills
Skill: Guns, HEAVILY affects physical skills
    Magic: Duh
Speed: Does NOT seem to affect dodge rates as much as you'd think it should (my low hit rate attacks never missing might have been my speed stat though now that I think about it)
Luck: Does anybody ever even bother with this

This being the press turn system, and high level enemies having no weaknesses and not really using elemental stuff (plus your main character can't get immunities/absorb/reflect this time) I'd say physical's better in 4. Especially since you know criticals give you extra turns.

Luck heavily influences status effects landing, crits, and instant death spells.Everyone should consider investing a bit in it, but magic heavy samurai will want it a bit more than physical heavy builds.

I heard of the fabled "plasma sword" that you get through a door requiring 100 strength to open. Perhaps on a seperate play-through I'll make a 100 strength build surrounding that weapon and focus on buff/debuff spells. Right now I kinda want some guns though... I suppose I'll have to keep playing before I can get some.

I've heard from people who've played through the japanese version that Magic is still king, and guns turn out kinda meh later on,as in even against enemies without weaknesses, magic does slightly more damage as long as they're not immune to it. it might pull ahead in NG+ though when you have both Dex and STR maxxed

Yeah I played the Japanese version and for me at least magic wasn't very good. Even in the cases where magic does do more damage I found that it was better to just get criticals and get the extra turns and smirks. I did take Alice's instant kill for myself just because, though.

I'm still waiting for guns since I got my Dex to 22 already (level 11) and have only a "meh" strength (15). Magic and Agility are fairly high, though, but when it comes to physical attacks I'm currently lacking.

I died right after I recruited my first demon, but otherwise, things have been running smoothly for me... not like that's saying much considering I only just unlocked demon fusing. I figure I'll be making a Dex-heavy MC with Luck for crits and enough Agility to keep me going first. I was expecting that Phys skills would still draw from HP so I could use my MP for out-of-combat healing, but oh well, not a big loss.

Prentice is short for apprentice, actually. Word-use isn't always linear. The shorter form is a special feature of the english loaning.
no idea what to do with stats... so nothing new to see here

Two ways I've heard to build are as a magic user that goes pretty much MAG with some AGI, or as a gun user that goes for DEX/LCK with some AGI. The magic user will be more versatile, but the gun build will probably have better raw damage output. It sounds like STR builds aren't very good in this game.

But I like Str builds. :(

    Demifiend SMASH!

I was hoping Samurai would too.

As I understand it, the issue is that STR affects basically nothing but your swing damage (that is, phys skills don't use STR), and guns will outpace it pretty heavily. I like being punchy too. :(

Say wha~ ? What do phys-skills use? Oh, DEX? And there's no VIT, I guess? Alright, then.

    Edit: Hey, I read there's a Plasma-weapon for 100 MAG, too.

Died a lot last night. Played this morning for 10 minutes and got two game overs. I must be doing it wrong.

I keep seeing people refer to going back to the barracks, which had never occurred to me. Is there a good way to avoid demons while running, or is engaging them in combat and trying to escape the best option? Does resting in the barracks refresh my dead demons?

Resting in the barracks is a free full heal, but just be aware that any demons that died aren't automatically put back into your party.

Also a neat tip I found. If you have a demon in your group (and it doesn't have to be in the active party) and you talk to the same demon in battle, it'll end the fight, saying something like "That's my friend there, take good care of him/her/it". Simply put it's a free 100% flee. Use it and abuse it.

Don't feel bad. I think I've had 6 random encounters, 3 have been game overs for me. One literally spawned at my feet while I was running and 1 shot me with a multi-hit attack.

Also, was Flynn always the name for the main character? My wife thinks it's a Breaking Bad reference (with Walter and all).
