Question about friend's possible deportation

billwillbillwill Registered User regular
One of my friends, Ivan, got caught with some pot last night. He's currently illegal.

I'm not sure of all the details and I'm trying to look it up on the internet but I'm operating on like two hours of sleep already and honestly none of it is making much sense. I need someone who already knows this stuff to just pare it down for me or at least point me in a direction of a source that isn't complicated legal text.

What I know:
+ He got a ticket for possession. A misdemeanor, the fine is $1347.

Not much to go on, obviously, but we're meeting later tonight so I should find out more. Hopefully it's enough. We're in Nevada, if it matters.

The only other pertinent thing is he's very poor. There's no way he could afford a lawyer.

I hate you and you hate me.

You're asking for pretty specific legal advice here, and really, you can't help him with any simplified thing you're likely to read on the internet . The only useful thing for you to do is to point him to a nonprofit organization that can advocate for him, or consult with an immigration lawyer yourself and see what you can find out with regards to state and federal law. But you're looking for advice on a situation we know literally next to nothing about: we don't know how long he's been here, how he got here, what kind of visa he was on, how long he's been illegal, where he's from, anything, and I'm willing to bet that "what happens next" is very dependent upon at least one of those things. There is also every possibility that anything you find doing your own research will be very out-of-date, and information you find on some internet site that he tries to follow may do him more harm than good.

He needs a lawyer or at the very least an advocate. You are not going to find anyone who can give you the appropriate advice here, because anyone qualified will not actually be allowed to give any real advice unless your friend is their client.

If you want to help him, get him a lawyer or an advocate. It will be far more useful and a lot less potentially harmful than what you are trying to do right now.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn
