Background
Devlin has never been known as lazy, but his industrious nature even as a child was marked by a tendency to look for shortcuts and work-arounds. When his arcane talents began to bloom at The Farling Strider Wizards Academy, he began selling glamoured trinkets to travelers through town and manipulating his peers into doing his school work while he monetized his abilities. He was discovered a few times, but has always been able to narrowly charm his way out of most situations.
Recent Activity
Devlin has worked his way into plotting burglary jobs for two rival gangs in the city; the Turklington Street Ruffians and the Eyes of Sehanine. Both of these gangs are small-time, manned by young toughs looking for ideas to hit the big time. Devlin has set them against each other, poaching each others loot while pinching a cut for himself.
Though dim, both gang-leaders; Seven Leer, the half-orc leader of the Ruffians, and Erris Errining, the halfling bandit in charge of the eyes, have figured out Devlin's treachery.
When they arrived to ambush him however, he was one step ahead of them with town guard in the wait to arrest both.
Two gangs are out for Devlin's blood while their leaders plot behind bars. Leaving town seems to be a great option for him, and luckily breaking up two gangs has brought him to the notice of the Sword Lords.
Personality + Appearance
Devlin is quick with a joke and loves company. He is always trying to work an angle in most situations. True friends soon are able to see through him. Devlin is rather selfless with those close to him, buying gifts and drinks for them with wild abandon. Handsome and dapper, Devlin dresses as sharply as his funds can manage, but is very self-conscious about his rapidly receding hairline, taking care to wear a hat at almost all times.
Decades ago The Heavy Gauntlet, a duelling school, was founded by one Master Roderick "One-thumb" Byzantine. All he had to start with was a sword, a promise of providing skill and nurturing talent, and a single Warforged unit he had purchased from a group of sailors up north. He intended for the rusty, yet arcane-infused automaton to simply be a metalsmith within the school, providing new and effective blades for students and teachers alike at a steady, consistent rate. However realising how shorthanded he was, Byzantine trained the comparatively compact and stocky Warforged in his spare time, allowing it to shadow him in classes and when running errands in the city. "Smith", as he was dubbed, led a very simple life. Smith tirelessly worked day and night in every available capacity: Sharpening blades, forging new practice swords, purchasing materials from local markets, and training with his master. Soon he even began to participate as a sparring partner for students.
However Byzantine could never hold onto money for that long, and despite his impeccable skill as a master his students slowly dwindled in number as they sought more prestigious academies. In the end he retired, with his only friend and compatriot being Smith, who never left his side. Slowly finding his individuality Smith learned to incorporate his inherent arcane abilities into his fledgling swordsmanship, both entertaining and duelling in theaters and the streets alike to help his master stay on his feet. Sooner, rather than later however, Byzantine passed away. With nothing much in terms of material wealth to leave his most faithful ward, in his will he granted Smith his freedom and whatever coin he had left, with the hope he'd given all that he could to help the Warforged build his own life and legacy. Despite Smith never having travelled far outside of Restov's limits, because of his undying gratitude and sense of loyalty, he hopes to experience the world while also continuing to help those in need of it.
Appearance:
While standing at an imposing height of 6'3", Smith has a relatively stripped back and stocky appearance compared to most Warforged. He was not built for war, nor open combat in general, and he has neither the behemoth-like strength of other automatons who toil in forges. He was primarily designed as an all-round helper, however this provides him with more a more sturdy and compact frame, making his structure less of a burden physically. Unlike most Warforged the numerous runes and sigils etched into his armoured "skin" provide more than just sentience and movement. They are neither mysterious nor ancient, but a step above utilitarian markings that allow Smith to compensate for his spartan appearance and build with elemental magic.
Personality and Mannerisms:
Naive is the best way to describe Smith's attitude about the world, woefully hapless in any social situation beyond purchasing items from merchants and following orders would be more accurate. That is not to say that he is dumb, far from it. Smith was not only taught the ways of the sword by Byzantine, but also the history of the land, and the simpler, yet important, lessons in life. Because of this, Smith maintains an unshakable loyalty to those who show him respect and trust. A few coins will buy you his services, a helping hand and kind words will earn you his friendship.
Like all Warforged, Smith remains fairly if not completely still when not performing as service. He maintains an incredibly efficient and task-driven mentality which comes across as aloof and cold on the surface. However the machine has always asked himself what purpose awaits him beyond holding a sword and answering orders, how would he ever "settled down", and who created him in the first place? This inner contemplation can preoccupy the automaton for hours on end, it's his duty-bound personality that keeps it from overtaking his psyche. Smith knows for certain, at least, he could never have another master. To him it would be the equivalent of replacing a father, once he had his own money to spend he even tracked down and purchased the sword Byzantine sold to continue his standard of living. It is Smith's lone treasured item, a tool, an heirloom, and a piece of "home" all in one.
Recent Events:
While researching more about the open world beyond Restov, Smith came across merchants who had travelled from the north. At the time they were being harassed by young men with more ale and vinegar in them than dignity or kindness so the Warforged had calmly stepped in, scaring off half of the gang while besting the others without much struggle in swordsmanship despite it being a fight of three against one. The brokers themselves turned out to be a mixture of traders and craftsmen from Lake Reykal, and were hoping to discover both fine swords and skilled duellers to impress those at Silverhall. As a fellow artisan and former metal worker, Smith found common ground with them and discovered their loyalty to the god, Moradin. Finding the tenets of their religion to suit him almost perfectly, while appreciating what direction they may provide him, he has started to incorporate such principles in his life. Humble as always, Smith also passively accepted the merchants' promise to detail his exploits once they returned to Lake Reykal, claiming they'd make sure to let his name and good deeds be heard.
As well as this, Smith is known to many of the younger sons of the gentry within Restov, as they had taken their first lessons in the sword from him and Byzantine. Despite having had no real personality back then, he'd earned their respect as a dignified and stoic figure, impressing them more with practiced and mechanical finesse over the flashier style of other fledgling duelling schools. Time has passed since then and while Smith may have known them as boys and young men who were more than eager to draw a sword than keep their mouth shut, they have matured since then into pillars of Restov's community.

Though small in physical size, Speelok is as ferocious as any half-orc. His word is his bond, so he holds liars and cheats in contempt. He values strength and power for those who have earned it through skill and valor. Like many members of his adopted tribe, he is short on words and often shorter on patience with rules of conduct and social protocols.
Recent Events
During one of Lord Gurev Medvye's frequent hunting expeditions, one of his young daughtesr became separated from her father and lost in the Gronzi Forest, where she was unfortunate enough to stumble onto a pack of wolves. Hunting nearby and hearing her cries, Speelok came to the child's rescue, fighting off the wolves and leading the girl back to her father and his entourage. Grateful for the kobold's intervention and impressed by his skills with a blade, Lord Medyve invited Speelok back to his holdings for a celebration and to sponsor the barbarian as a member of the adventuring company headed to the Stolen Lands

All day, er'ry day for posting. I've ran a few 4E games on here in the past as well as participated in quite a few (including the current Dragon Slayers).
Shattered memories are all Davandra has left of her former life. She was a soldier once, she knew that, but everything else is gone. There are scars in odd places. Children? War Wounds? There's no way of knowing, but a yearning to lead others into battle consumes the leftover flickers of whom she used to be. A face. A man, possibly a general? She must find him, he'll have the answers.
An even bigger mystery is why the Raven Queen brought her back. Waking up as a shade, she knew not what she was to do, just tossed a spear and pointed to the door. The spear feels familiar, at least; it feels like home.
Additional Background she does not know: She was the adjutant and consort of a major general (up to the DM how to incorporate) and known as "Lady of Battle" for her beauty, generosity and courage on the field. While now a revenant, she'll be known by some people, as she was the figurehead for the army she fought within.
Personality
Davandra is kind, but confused and driven by unseen forces. She will never hesitate to jump into battle or help her allies, but seems dead to the world outside of battle. She is still getting used to her new life as a revenant, and still does not know where her place in the world will be.
Availability
Generally available most days, though the occasional business trip will sometimes hinder availability for about a week(usually once every few months)

Welcome everyone to the one (and only)...
Kingmaker Submission Awards
We seem to have a healthy selection of submissions here (for a 4th Ed. game at least). Some really good subs here people, and i can tell you... it was difficult having to sift through these awesome characters. There are a few recognizable faces here and there this time, but it's more than made up by the vast number of new players and underdogs.
First off, I'd like to thank everyone for their submissions. All of them were awesome to read, but unfortunately, only 5 will make it to the game, so let's get started;
Normally, I’d list 3-4 nominees from each respective role, but since some of them barely have even 2 players in their respective roles (see Controllers), I’ll set to announcing the winner in each role instead (the 5th being what I'd like to call a Personal choice, as in "I like this concept; it's AWESOME!"). As is the tradition, we'll go alphabetically first, starting with Controller, Defender, Leader, Striker Roles and finishing it off with the Personal choice.
Now without further ado, let's start with the Controllers.
Controller:
Matthew Whitmarsh, Human Wizard by SaberOverEasy Congrats!
Defender:
Nemo Newtan, Halfling Paladin of Avandra by Kilnaga Congrats!
Leader:
Gareth Hammerarm, Human Bravura Warlord byNerfThatMan Congrats!
Striker:
Arifyn Tok, Changeling Fey Warlock by Talonrazor Congrats!
And lastly...
Personal choice:
There were a lot of good submissions that I enjoyed reading here, but sadly only one will make it, and that is...
Dhyrn the Indolent, Gnoll Rogue by doomybear Congrats!
Congratulations on all 5 of you! We'll start the game this coming Monday! Until then, now's a good time for each and every one of you take a good look at each others Character Sheets, and do some party planning. Maybe find some synergy between your characters, and check for any skills you guys might be short on.
....
....
....
Well? Why is everyone still here? SHOW'S OVER! GO ON, SHOO!
....
....
....
....
Really? You guys aren't going away? What if I closed my eyes?
*Sigh*
I WAS going to keep this a secret for later, but if you insist...
OK, I admit it! There were some really good submissions here! And I didn't want them to go to waste, Ergo, I was planning a 6th player to join the game. So now that the cat's out of the bag, let's congratulate my 2nd Personal Choice (and 6th party member):
Smith, Warforged Swordmage by Gatsby Welcome aboard!
Now that's settled...
From this moment on, this thread will become our OOC thread.
Just a reminder: I suggest all players complete/finalize their character sheets, find any pictures for their characters (specially @Talonrazor), modify/tweak their characters for optimum party performance (like skills etc.), trim backgrounds and other stuff. I also require a short introduction/description of your character (a few sentences worth) from you all (PM it to me). Check out the opening thread of my Curse of the Crimson Throne or Council of Thieves IC threads (or more recently, my Carrion Crown IC thread), under the Cast section for any examples of what I'm looking for. If you want, you can also PM me a final picture/portrait of your character. Once you've agreed on your final picture, I will post a token of your character along with your written description.
And lastly, I require a Treasure List of items for your characters between Level 2 ----> Level 7 (So you'll have a list with one Level 2 item, one level 3 item, one level 4 item etc.). Once again, PM me.
We'll start our IC thread on Monday (14th) the latest (depending on how busy I am this weekend, and how quickly the winners PM me their stuff, we MIGHT start earlier, but I also got some work to finish for Monday).
Thank you and good night (or good day/morning, depending on your timezone)!

So, it looks like we have no liars or hippies. Dhyrn isn't that great at spelunking, either, so that can be considered a weak spot. Tok can lie decently, though, with Bluff +6 even without training.
PM Sent. I can't find anything that really captures the image I have of Arifyn Tok. I may end trying to talk an artist buddy into drawing him or just commissioning something. Here's a good placeholder of him though!

I think the Gnoll/Halfling pair cut a rather hilarious silhouette when standing side by side. I think they'll be the best of comrades, their insane size difference demands it. :P

I'm really amused to see how the odd couple works out.
As a side note: Matthew keeps the fact that he's a wizard very private. Not telling people has already saved his life once, and that's a lesson he's learned well. If anyone has asked already, he's jut told them that he's a merchant looking for adventure.

That's why I called you the young merchant and not the young wizard. :P

Now that I think of it, I don't think I've ever actually played a straight up striker.

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for their submissions. All of them were awesome to read, but unfortunately, only 5 will make it to the game, so let's get started;
Controller:
Defender:
Leader:
Striker:
And lastly...
Personal choice:
There were a lot of good submissions that I enjoyed reading here, but sadly only one will make it, and that is...
Congratulations on all 5 of you! We'll start the game this coming Monday! Until then, now's a good time for each and every one of you take a good look at each others Character Sheets, and do some party planning. Maybe find some synergy between your characters, and check for any skills you guys might be short on.

Well? Why is everyone still here? SHOW'S OVER! GO ON, SHOO!

Welcome aboard!

Do you want those PMs separately for each subject or is it alright if they're in one?
You can post everything in one PM if you'd like.
Now to go dig through more books...
Arcana - Whitmarsh 9, Smith 9, Tok 8
Athletics - Hammerarm 10, Dhyrn 9, Smith 8
Bluff - Tok 6*
Diplomacy - Newtan 9, Whitmarsh 7
Dungeoneering - Dhyrn 6
Endurance - Smith 10, Dhyrn 6, Hammerarm 5, Newtan 2
Heal - Newtan 10, Hammerarm 4
History - Whitmarsh 9, Smith 9, Hammerarm 7
Insight - Whitmarsh 7, Tok 7
Intimidate - Tok 9, Hammerarm 5
Nature
Perception - Dhyrn 8
Religion - Whitmarsh 9, Newtan 4
Stealth - Dhyrn 11
Streetwise - Tok 9
Thievery - Dhyrn 9
So, it looks like we have no liars or hippies. Dhyrn isn't that great at spelunking, either, so that can be considered a weak spot. Tok can lie decently, though, with Bluff +6 even without training.
We may, however, starve to death.

Just sending off my trimmed background and treasure list. I'm so excited I even drew a new and final design for Smith
Welcome aboard guys! Let's make this an awesome PbP!
I think it was in 2009; I DO remember running Scales of War based on your thread back then.
