And re the Mayan quest, Egypt can be done as a fresh out the gate newbie. Unless you get lost.

In which case you will be eaten.

    Repeatedly.

    It's all saltwater these days:
    Ocean, tears and heartbreak soup
Half alive in a whitecap foam
Half in love with a white half moon

So, good word of mouth made me pick this up for the first time after a brief derping around in beta.

First, I have no earthly clue how to craft shit in this game, since it seems almost aggressively obtuse and counterintuitive. Is crafting something I can completely skip and just buy gear down the road?

Second, I'd forgotten how this game inspires me to create the most plain, fully-clothed female character possible. Judging by the the other female characters I run across, this seems to be a habit I alone share.

Third, I think I'm kinda sorta figuring out my Shotgun/Chaos deck build thing, but then again, I'm pretty much sold on anything that can be described as "shotgun chaos".

    crafting is awful

what you need to know is this- to craft a glyph, you need four runes and a glyph kit

Put the runes in a "circle"

Then you have made a rune for your weapons

sell all your other crafting mats because who fucking cares

Like, the idea of crafting in this game is rad- I like the approach this game takes to everything. It doesn't hold your hand, and you have to think and remember things (or just constantly look it up)

But the end result is you just basically end up getting a zillion unusable crafting mats that build up forever and then you just sell like...100 base metals because you can't be bothered to turn them into higher-level crafting mats and really, weapons and talismans drop like candy from bosses, quests, and regular mobs so who cares.

I think I have made one weapon that I actually used (a QL3 elementalism focus)...and then ten minutes later a QL4 focus dropped

    So

    I felt like a rube

    ALSO PROTIP

If you can, put Accuracy glyphs on your weapons. Weapons are interesting- if you are using, say, a +crit blood focus and a +penetration claw weapon, your blood attacks will have +crit and your claw attacks will have +penetration.

The best thing to do is obviously put +hit on both weapons if you can (which I guess is why crafting might be good? to make QL weapons with empty glyph slots?) so that you can stack crit or penetration or whatever on your talismans

@AlbinoBunny I'm honestly not sure what the appropriate hit rating is, but remember that Attack Rating and Hit Rating are both taken into account, and I think that the weapon's Attack Rating (directly proportional to QL level and quality) is the bulk of the 'will it glance???' equation.

So if you're running around with a low level Chaos focus compared to your Fist weapon, for example, your Chaos attacks will glance a lot while your Fist attacks probably won't.

But as I recall, you have two QL5 weapons, right?

Finally had a chance to put some hours in during the holiday, and I'm digging the hell out of it. Even with a lot of standard mechanics, it feels so fresh. I think I'm a sucker for the setting, mostly. I have SO many questions, though! Can any rec a comprehensive FAQ or newbie site?

I'm working my way around Kingsmouth now. Initially I just picked up blood and spent point in both healing and damage sides of it while selecting the "dps" version of quest rewards. It's really hard for me to tell if it's terrible or not, because I don't know how fast or easily a normal player is supposed to kill an even con or yellow mob in this game yet.

So am I supposed to have a weapon in addition to using blood magic? Seemed like in general chat everyone was espousing AR and/or using blood in conjunction with fist or even pistol. I'm still unsure of how this works. Doesn't seme like I have enough hotkeys on the primary bar to effectively use two weapons sets. I've got 4 attack skills from blood and 2 heal/barrier skills from blood [healing] right now, so I think I need to read up more on that.

I think I'm a little hooked, though. I keep getting good vibey flashbacks to AO, too, even if some of that is clunky engine nostalgia. =P

    Hey @Straygatsby ! I love blood!

Okay, so first thing is this- you don't need to put SP in both lines for a weapon (I think, we keep going back and forth on this), but you DO need to invest SP into whatever weapons you like best and will use most often. If you are using blood, I would recommend putting your SP into the damage line, which buffs your damage whenever you bleed yourself (which you will do ALOT, and I THINK it also buffs healing as well!)

Blood/Fist, Blood/AR, and Blood/Pistol are all "healing" sets- that is, investing all your points into these combinations will get you damage abilities, but people are saying that because they work well together for a healer.

I would say this- the good thing about blood is that it has synergies to ALMOST all weapon types, so unless you really want to be a healer, pick whatever secondary weapon you want. I did most of the starting zone as Blood/Elemental, and switched to fists after I filled out both of the "inner rings" of blood.

I would recommend NOT doing this- I blew a lot of points filling in three entire rings. Pick two weapons you liked (You should have tried them all in the intro quest, if not quickly make a new character and try them all out).

Then, when you are setting up your abilities, you need to keep the following maxim in mind: UNLESS YOU ARE BUILD ABILITIES FOR HEALING IN A DUNGEON you want to have one builder ability that generates resources (which show up in the bottom left of your screen) for both equipped weapons. Generally all damaging builders do this, but tend to generate additional resources for their specific weapon type depending on certain things. Then, take two "consumers", one from each of your weapons. After these two requirements, go hog-wild and get whatever you want in your last 4 slots. I generally take a self-heal and some buff.

For dungeons, however, the game changes if you are a healer, because you now generally need TWO resource builders- one for each weapons, which is REALLY annoying.

If your skills are what I think they are, you have boiling blood, blood spike, exsanguinate (maybe?) infection, blood shield and angelic aegis.

You can drop either blood spike or exsanguinate, as they fill the same role (resource consumer). Grab another weapon and put some points in it to get a resource consumer for it as well.

Also, when you open your skills window (Default "N") look on the far left tab, under "decks". The starter decks are all not too bad, and they give you a guide to what skills to buy (and, bonus! once you buy all the skills for a deck, you get the outfit the guy in the picture is wearing! You also just get a special jacket when you finish an inner ring). Most of the starter blood decks aren't bad- I leveled up as Haruspex, and it works well.

Awesome! Thanks Arch et al. That really helps. I'll check out the other weapons and do some skill management tonight. I suspect I haven't wasted too many points yet, so no need to reroll or any of that madness.

Points are only a "waste" in the sense that they're not applicable/useful to you right at that moment. Otherwise, each one you spend is a step towards a goal.

Also keep in mind that the vast majority of quests are repeatable for more XP, and thus AP/SP.

I have one QL 5 sword and one QL 3 pistols (the set from Polaris).

I've swapped out my heal rating charm for more HP and hit (because honestly, the 100 heal rating was giving me 2HP/S IF I penned).

Check my Chronicle to see if it updates.

Also, I may have one or two QL10 glyphs with in my weapons because mayans are like Candy. I also need an escort through blue mountains to get to the bird for the Mayan quest.

I went ahead and picked Elementalism for my starting ability since I don't really like guns in fantastical settings, carrying around a sword would get funny looks, and the animations for claws and hammers were pretty dumb.

I like it a lot so far. I went Blood Magic for my second, and it's working ok. Still just in Kingsmouth, but I really like the lore and the way quests are structured.

Haven't found a way to play pretty princess dress-up yet, though.

More HP and Hit, or more HP and Attack Rating? Is it a blue +HP or a green tank or deeps talisman?

Green Talismans give more balanced (but overall lower) stats to prevent gimpage - Tank talismans have a bunch of HP and a little Attack Rating (even tanks need to hit), DPS Talismans have a bunch of Attack Rating and a little HP, Heal Talismans have a bunch of Heal Rating and a little HP.

Blues just give the primary stats (HP for tanks, Attack Rating for DPS, Heal Rating for Healers), but give way more - they require you to put together a balanced set. I find that a Head Attack Rating blue and the rest HP is good for tanking, you can even swap a major or minor talisman out for an Attack Rating one if you want a touch more damage. DPS invert that (Head or Head+1 Maj or Minor HP, rest Attack Rating), and Healers need a lot of healing, a little HP, and a little AR unless they're 'never ever attack' healers, like Fist/Blood specialists.

Hit Rating is a secondary stat, and less important than raw Attack Rating and QL MOAR weapons.

Funny thing about TSW compared to most MMOs. Y'know how in most every MMO ever you are the only one who can save the day? Yet there are a bunch of people running around doing the same thing as you? Well, TSW acknowledges the fact that you are literally one of many all trying to accomplish the same goal. In fact many NPCs may say something like, "Oh another one?" or "I'll tell you what I told the others".

    It is rather refreshing.

edit- Heh, and even when you do save the day no one is impressed and in fact (depending on your faction) they may chew you out for not doing it faster. :P

I'd be happy to help you guys get there. :) It's essentially go to Egypt < watch cutscene < back to London, pick up sidequest < farm Mayans < go back to London. Done.

Imma ward whore the fuck out of that. Temptation to spend the like 7AP to get the Chaos pull elite.

The pull made ward farming at the Morninglight camp in Kingsmouth a breeze. Farmed up 500 remains in about an hour.

Is there something wrong with the clothes? I put the pumpkin head on and it says the pumpkin head is equipped but it keeps disappearing when I load into stuff or when I log into the character it shows it on in the character select menu but it isn't on when I log on.

It used to weaken impair targets. It was in the past month or so changed to weaken on any chaos/swords/hammer attack, to quell the grumbling that all tanks needed to use escalation, and opening up sword/hammer as a viable tanking build.

texasheat, welcome to Team Mean Green. You made the right choice, pay no attention to the Templars. They're stick-in-the-muds that smell like cat pee.

    D:

Just you wait till the next council meeting. Don't think there wont be a strongly worded letter!

I'm pretty sure @Decomposey is not really a Dragon. There's too much cohesion in the posts.

Actually the Dragon is quite cohesive. Just because YOU can't understand it doesn't mean the rest of us can't. Ring the bell with no clapper, let the silent peal sound the call that pulls you to the where the teacher in white adopts a home, dear templar.

I can't hear you through my awesome gas mask.

You couldn't hear me regardless, the rhythm is there, but you won't percieve anything but cacophony.

Cacophony is rhythm if we brand it so.

Exactly as indicated in the models. Run for the cheese in your labyrinths built with careful hand, I'll be tossing beech to the wind.

The variables are mutable. We set them in place until they are no longer of benefit upon which we rewrite the rules.

Do not try to adjust your set we control the horizontal and the vertical.

Of course you do. Now pay the Ninja Tax, and move along.

You guys are making me look bad.

Stop before I go to Kyoto and stomp on a butterfly.

(Nah, seriously, posts are awesome. Please continue. The Six Mouths approve.)

I'm just playing with him. If I wanted to end it, I'd bring up why they can't bring the blog down, and the why of that why.

Oh no, I was being silly. I'm a bit starved for intellectual stimulation so this is doing wonders for keeping me entertained.

I suppose I should go work on my DPS build though...

So, I guess they just decided that ward pulling wasn't actually any kind of sploit?

What is this I don't even.

We have models too, of ships and planes and things. I have a model of a nice aircraft carrier on my desk you know, 200th scale, Spent some good time building that thing.

Doesn't mean I really own an aircraft carrier though. I might, however, own a few people in control of one but that's beside the point.
