Also if DiCaprio doesnt get a Best Supporting Actor Oscar Nod, there is some shit going on.
Hope you don't mean for Django Unchained, because while I love the film, he was passable and just did the same DiCaprio performance he's been doing for years now.

What is the deal with zinc lozenges, which is hippy not-well-tested medicine, all-of-a-sudden having a "Drug Facts" label like respectable OTCs like Tylenol, and also not having an FDA-mandated "this stuff won't necessarily do anything" notice
I got fooled by this. It was really obnoxious. I remember looking into it after the fact, but not what the results were. Something about they have been shown to legitimately help people but nobody knows the right dosages and circumstances, and what's being sold now are just half-assed guesses?

I'm pleased as plums. I got a B+ on advanced linear algebra, and the professor just sent me a note about how impressed he was with me.
So g&t has a thread on women and videogames design. It was mostly a best case scenario, generally avoiding most of the traps you see with these.
But now the thread has petered out, except every four days a dumb person comes in with a variation of "I like sexy ladies in my videogames what are you talking about." It is both the worst and highly amusing.
btw: for anyone looking to get into programming don't get down on yourself from what I posted the last 2 pages. It is more realistic to get started now without a degree than any time since the late 1980s (though of course a degree and the contacts / projects you make in school are preferable).
But you have to have finished projects under your belt. These days there are tons of options to get your work into the marketplaces for various mobile devices or even windows 8 market or steam greenlight these days. Having a portfolio of finished projects (even if they sell like crap) is your resume.

I'm hoping to learn a little programming between now and the fall. Not like, a whole CS degree or anything but I figure learning a language is doable.

I think my question got swallowed up in the flow of the thread so I'll ask here:
Does anyone know if the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act was extended as part of this Fiscal Cliff nonsense, or has it expired and wasn't even a consideration?

Yeah, I think a lot of your points in the last couple pages have been well taken. Learning programming isn't hard, precisely, but it's a very long process. It's not so much that it's slow as there's a lot to learn. It's also a very particular way of thinking about things that is difficult for some people.
People complaining about "nice guys" are starting to seem more common than nice guys themselves.
i'm starting to wonder because i never actually see guys who complain about the friend zone. do you have to go looking for these people?
like, the person described in that article is shitty and lame. but i hardly ever run into them and short of intentionally going to PUA forums or r/mensrights or whatever, i'm not sure how their existence is such a big thing
like, i don't bother talking about neonazis and how much they suck because i usually forget they exist

I believe it expired and was not part of the negotiations.

I haven't seen anything about it getting extended, though they could do so at any point and make it retroactive to the beginning of the year.

this seems to be my experience so far with programming:
1) have some basic problems with syntax, careful typing, making sure your environment will even compile, etc
2) from here you're basically fine until you spend a few days understanding basic loops
3) more stuff
4) more stuff
5) more stuff
6) recursion
recursion is where i first felt genuinely stupid when programming, and i think that's a common step. none of the people i talk to, really, who've successfully learned programming, seemed to get hung up before there. shifts in paradigmatic thought, like recursive approaches and the whole polymorphic nature of OOP, is where i think the reasonably intelligent person will realize 'ok, this stuff is for real'.

The simple relationship between classes and objects throws people sometimes. Also arrays.

Oh, and if you're looney enough to start with C++ then pointers may muddle you up pretty bad.
The whole nice guy/friend zone dynamic is all just a really long, really boring (to me, a gay guy) square dance around the fact that straight people are unwilling to speak frankly about how physical attractiveness plays into their mating rituals and how men and womens misconceptions about the physical attractiveness standards of their opposite sex creates problems that no one is willing to talk about.
Gay men are cruel, but honest. They will tell you to your face that they will only fuck VGL guys and if you aren't VGL fuck off.

recursion is important to know about but is one of the most dangerous things. As my boss is fond of stating in code reviews: There is no problem that can be solved with recursion that cannot also be solved with loops.
Especially if you are using a C based language finding a way to not use recursion is always preferable.
Multithreading is usually the big hurdle for intermediate programmers. Because you have to move to a way of thinking about your code that is non-determenistic. It's like going from Maxwell to Quantum. Suddenly you never know for sure what is going to happen.

I usually see people like that show up in any thread about feminism anywhere.
But for the most part, the 'nice guy' stuff is far from the worst stuff they say. Like, people who exhibit those traits tend to have some serious fucking red flags and issues that pretty strongly overpower it. I'm not going to criticize someone for being a Nice Guy when I can criticize them for saying rape is no worse than getting a vaccine.
