So far as I can tell, there is no reason to not start as hardcore.
Main reasons to not start hardcore is either you just don't care (which is perfectly valid, especially seeing as how this is a game where lag can kill a hardcore character) or because you want access to your main stash right away.

Sure. When I thought about it, the "just don't care" option would still compliment starting with hardcore since if you die nothing is really lost.
I guess the only qualifier on that is, as you said, access to the main stash.
Starting in softcore is, of course, not an incorrect way of playing the game. Just seems like nothing is lost by starting in hardcore...on the off chance that you happen to never die it's not as if anything is lost or any additional expense is incurred.

The reason I didn't start in hardcore to begin with is strictly because I might start to treat staying in hardcore as a goal, and I wanted to be nice and chill to begin with. That's to say, purely psychological reasons.

not having access to your stash is a huge thing though?
it's hard to have fun when you're destitute and can't have a 4l
Hardcore peeps tend not to play softcore so you lose the delta between what you can sell your gear for on SC before you delete your character and what similar item will cost you on HC to repurchase.

I wouldn't have any of the items I have that made the first 15 levels easymode, so there's that. Not that I couldn't have powered through it eventually, but making Merveil an easy boss fight counts for something.
You still generally have currency and various knicknacks accumulate in your hoard.
Though strictly speaking, you don't need a lot of stuff to power through those early levels. Particularly if you have a few higher level HC characters you've stopped using for whatever reason.
Game knowledge is one of the cardinal virtues of Hardcore and races and is by far more important than either of the above. Knowing how fast you can push and to what limits . . .
hardcore is the best core, everyone knows this! Is there anyone out there with HC characters sitting close to 70? If I do get back into this, I would rather not go it alone. I think I have a 70 templar and 50 shadow respectively waiting for action.
Vaal Oversoul died like a bitch to my skeleton swarm. More importantly this is the first character of mine (out of 7 or 8) that have fought Perpetus and not died. He's always a nasty surprise at the start of Act 3.
I just chain summoned at him and got out of his way when he leaped at me and that was it.

I have a level 80 witch kicking around.
I also want to experiment with other builds.

Question about farming efficiency. I did what I consider to be my first evening of *real* farming on my witch. Here is the result:
All the currency in the picture is what the shit rares disenchanted into. How does this compare with other people's farming experience? Is that the unique / good rare rate I ought to expect?
I tried to do Merv on Merciless, but I kept dying in the boss battle. It was very difficult to speed there with Quicksilver and teleport due to mobs hitting me. Once I get more resist, life / shield, and DPS (Arc 1171) I'll switch to Merciless.
I do not know exactly how many runs I did. But each run takes about 3 minutes. So, 150 minutes, 3 minutes per run, subtract some time to do bulk ID / disenchant...maybe 40ish runs?

I just need to watch some tutorials on how best to use orbs, plan gear and skill trees and then I can roll a new HC. However, I doubt I will be able to commit to any playdates, because I have studies and other things to take care of. Plus, I am GMT +1.
Still, I love this game to bits. I hope I will have time to get a little better at it.
Right, this is one issue with PoE: you can only add people to friends list via a character name, and then (I think) only if they're currently playing that character. This complicates the PoE Spreadsheet of doom and glory.
I forgot how much fun this game was. Patch notes for 1.00 look good too! Anyone excited about the new class at all?
I have a level 69 ranger. I won't be able to play for a few weeks (computer repairs) but I'm thinking about jumping back in after that. What are the biggest chances since April? People still playing lightning arrow rangers?

So it needs a character name column. This can be done!

Unless things have changed, just add one character name per account. That's what you need to add someone as a friend, after that it'll automatically add the account and track all characters.
Have they released the new tree yet? I decided to go with a tablet stun based Heavy Strike aura sharing/Conduit toon for Wang of Exile guild support and want to an the reset on my lvl 50 or so Marauder. I'm also kind of assuming there'll be a 'cast on stun' trigger gem that I can stack with blind and like Spark.
Is it safe to say there'll be more than 90 skill points easily available post reset?

It does not hurt to provide more information. As you said, adding one character adds the whole account. Some people may hop between different characters with some frequency.
Yeah, so as long as you know people by their account name, you don't need to know every character name of theirs, it'll list the account for you as well. It doesn't matter either way, but it's a bit easier for people to just add account and one character and not have to worry about updating that info, outside of them deleting that one character. The thing that matters is knowing what PoE account name links to what PA account name.

So I haven't played in quite some time, has there been any major changes in the last six months?

SC economy is borked. I don't know how the HC economy is atm, though when I was last playing a huge demand from the top players was destroying Exalteds quite quickly. And you could sell your Exalts for a currency of choice. This will likely change now that changes to the game let you XP grind without being part of the mapping crowd.
Alteration orbs are actually worth something in HC, last I was around, if you could find a buyer looking for it in bulk. But I have no idea what the state of the market is now.
EDIT:
Let me expand on why I think SC is borked, though this may no longer be the case.
Items are never destroyed in SC and there's also a huge incentive to hoard currency, which generally leads to inflation and a general difficulty just selling lower-end stuff. (Why bother? Death means nothing in the lower levels and most everybody likely has junk lying around to twink out their characters.)
BTW, you can sell transmutation shards and orbs for ID scrolls and use those scrolls to further generate alteration shards.
Equipment items, yes.
Though I do think there is a tendency to hoard currency.

mostly because to make the best gear, from my understanding, you're likely to need to use that currency to roll it over and over. and there's no point in that til you're high level.
at least that's why I try not to use the currency I get. but then I also am going to avoid trading with anyone outside of this thread.
Maps are a huge currency sink. Still, inflation is inevitable on SC. That's one reason people love ladder resets. New economy. In PoE that pretty much means playing in the 4 month leagues. That said, 9 months in you still can't get a cheap Kaom's Heart.

One. I don't think they let the free patch respecs stack.
Skellie Spell Totems are a stupid cheap way to flood the field with a wall of minions. Good for drawing aggro and blocking chokes.

but that was the debt ceiling
ugh 6 more days
Do only myself and two other people play, or intend to play? That seems unlikely.
can you just add one of my characters? you could add assbutte or mmlady
i just put assbutte in the field

Alright, added new columns to the spreadsheet.
Account Name: The name for your overall account.
SC Toon: The name of your softcore toon(s).
HC Toon: The name of your hardcore toon(s).
For reference

Lowest level? But they deserve so much more!
Dual Spork is, perhaps, the most fun I have had in a video game in quite some time.
Set up my shop on the official forums. There is not much right now, but I hope that changes by this evening.
