Genesis Platformers

So here's my situation. I grew up with an SNES, but never had a Genesis, meaning I missed out on a fair number of titles from the 16-bit era. Now that I'm able, I have been going back to fill in some of those gaps, focusing on 2-D platformers. I started, obviously, with Sonic the Hedgehog, and once I exhausted those titles I played through Ristar.

Now, I'm looking for games along that vein. I've been told that Dynamite Headdy was an exceptional platforming title, but unfortunately it doesn't appear easy to get a hold of. What other games can former (or current) Genesis owners suggest? Availability in "nostalgia collections" on current-gen systems is obviously a plus.

Aladdin, Earthworm Jim, The Lion King, all fantastic games that hold up today, altough Aladdin is a little easy but EWJ and TLK are freaking challenging. Dave perry worked on two of them and Disney worked on the other two meaning the animation and grpahics are top-notch and they all have a lot of character and charm.

    Gunstar Heroes is awesome :)

And I totally second the EWJ, Aladdin, and Lion King recommendations from Hotlead. Those were a blast.

whoa? I still think the cave when there is lava is pretty difficult. By the way, I would get Earthworm Jim 2 over the first. In my opnion it is much better (and a little more forgiving than the first one).

I'm going to throw Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure in there too. I booted it up on a whim a couple of months ago and had a lot of fun with it. Great level design and very catchy music.

fuck, now I'm going to have the theme tune stuck in my head for ages now.

Oooh! Flashback is fucking awesome too.

EDIT: That Donald and Mickey Mouse platformer that featured Co-op is a sweet game too. Yeah, that Lava cave in Aladdin was a bitch until you get the level layout down, then you can do it blindfolded.

While not exactly in the same vein as Sonic, I found Quackshot to be surprisingly fun.

Also, while not strictly a platformer, do yourself a favour and play Wonderboy in Monsterland.

Ghouls 'n Ghosts is pretty good.

I'm inclined to say that, while still hard, it's easier than Ghosts 'n Goblins and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, 'cuz it's the only one of the three that I've beaten.

CastleVania:Bloodlines is a pretty awesome platformer on the Genesis. Two characters means there are a couple parts in the game where it diverges, so there's a bit of replay value. Music is great, but it's a CastleVania game, so there are some parts that are difficult and some parts that are downright cheap.

The Genesis Collection has a shitload of good platformers (VectorMan 1 and 2, Comix Zone, Sonic 1 and 2, etc) and the Sonic Mega Collection is pretty self-explanitory. That said, there is something about playing them on an actual Genesis, actually having a stack of carts and blowing into the slot every once in a while.

That's weird. I've never had to blow into my Genesis or its carts, ever.

But I do hear you about playing on the actual console. It somehow feels more right.

That's what I'm loving about the Virtual Console,... it still feels right, just 10x more convenient. I hope some of these awesome Genesis platformers come out on the VC. "My" Genesis growing up actually belonged to my brother, and he got rid of it and all the games. In the past few years I've reconstituted some of the collection, but some of these are kind of hard to track down these days.

It was probably the specific Genesis I had. Every so often a game would get stuck on the "Produced by or under license from" screen.

I don't think that the previous owner took very good care of it.

There is something about that era of gaming consoles, though. I would be willing to bet that if you drop kicked the average Genesis off the side of your house and then hooked it back up, it would still work like a champ.

Well in general a cart based system has a lot less complicated parts then the modern day disk systems.

It's pretty easy to mess up a delicate laser reader but a cart reader is a little more durable then that.

I really have been meaning to deck out my place with a classic console, there's an excellent reason to make it a Genesis. I can't answer for its hardware specifically, but what I loved about the SNES is that it had the most durable controllers of any system I can think of. NES and N64 controllers would wear down and get wobbly over time, but their 16-bit brother was a trooper. Hopefully Genesis controllers are the same way.

What about Kid Chameleon? Of course, you'll never actually play every level. Do the Valis games count as platformers? Maybe El Viento? I have a pile of games, but I can't think of any more at the moment. I don't think Moonwalker counts...

That game was pretty crazy big, I never owned it myself but it seems every time you played it you'd see something new.

Quackshot and Wonder Boy in Monster World for platforming/adventure goodness.

It's a lot easier if you're not playing it on a monochrome monitor where you can't even see the floor gaps. I got through half the damned level just memorizing the gap locations before cranking up the brightness and seeing the difference.
