Leaky Bathtub faucet...trying to fix. Help please!

KatoKato Registered User regular
I have been watching videos online and doing any research I can...but I am really having a hard time figuring this out. I have no idea as to what brand the faucet in my tub is so that doesn't help. I can get the cover off and the handle...but there is a tube that appears to be covering the cartridge that holds the stem? I can't for the life of me get that thing to come loose and come off. Am I missing something?

Posting a few pics below to see if that helps. It really appears that the end of the tube can come loose and come off...it even has the "grips" around it for a wrench from what I can tell. But nothing is getting that thing to move so I am really curious if I am going at it the right way.

First things first, is the water turned off in the basement or wherever? Basically, get the water turned off. The first 1/8" or so of metal past the plastic stem should be a nut so you can remove that entire assembly and replace it. I wound up having to replace the faucet in our bathroom sink as it was some odd 30 year old brand that I couldn't find a proper replacement for; also, wife wanted a vanity + sink rather than pedestal soooo. I undid mine, took the whole thing to a few hardware shops and realized it was an oddball, so hit up a couple plumbing places I knew of. They advised that yeah, it was a weird one and I went from there.

Is that a little M logo on the other handle? If so, Moen, go find a cartridge at the hardware store and replace the leaking one.

If not, take the handle and cartridge to the hardware and ask them.

Is that a screw that I see in the tip of the plastic cap? If so unscrew it. Cartridge should be underneath. There is likely a little brass clip that you'll have to pull out before you can pull out the cartridge. Also, take pictures of each step so you have something to reference when you go to put it back together.

I just had to do this with my sink. I had a hell of a time getting the cartridge out, and I refused to go buy the stupid tool to take it out. I ended up putting a screw into the cartridge to keep the pipe wrench from slipping off, and then I used a hammer to gently tap it out without damaging the rest of the housing. That is when I realized that I had shut the cold water off, but not the hot and sprayed water all over my kitchen!

Yes...that is exactly what I am looking at. That first 1/8" of an inch appears to be a nut, but for the life of me, that thing will NOT come loose. I consider myself a halfway strong guy too...but it just won't budge. Any tips on how to get that thing to loosen up at all without buying new tools or something?
