yeah, they're done with Dead Space for a good while now that EA's picked up the star wars licenses
not that that's a bad thing; having more time between dead space games lets us get bad at them again (so the next ones will be scarier to us) and also lets them think up fresh ideas without pressure to annualize the franchise.

Decided this morning to run a couple of the co-op missions (specifically the first two) with a friend. The first one was kind of cool, but the second one was... well...
Well, until the player who is Isaac (which I was) comments after the mission is done that they'd been standing in the elevator for 5 minutes. Meaning the whole thing took place inside Carver's head. And I didn't even get all the weird hallucinations Carver/2P did! Nuts.

I got to play as Carver during that mission. It was pretty cool!
Was bummed out that you couldn't rebuild that plasma cutter when I got curious and took it apart. It's doesn't matter I suppose because some of the gun combos are way more awesome.
I think you can rebuild it if you save the blueprint before dismantling it.
I pretty much stopped experimenting with weapon builds once I had my electric chain spike launcher.
Nope, it's a "special" gun and taking it apart makes it lose it's specialness.
Any suggestions for a second gun? Up until this point I'd been running with the Plasma Cutter and a Line Gun (with knockback for regenerators); but since adding Stasis to the Plasma, I haven't used the Line Gun much. I did make a Revolver/Rivet Gun for dealing with soldiers, but it's currently sitting in my safe.
And really, a third gun slot should have been included.
Once I made a pulse rifle with a three-round burst with a shotgun underside I didn't feel the need to make another gun. It's not as flashy as the other weapons, but I made it a little before half-way through the game and then used it until the end of the game. My back-up weapon was the lightning gun with the laser blade attachment, and while it ate through ammo, was ungodly powerful.
Stasis chaingun with force gun lower. With big clip mods you never get cought reloading in cqb. Also had fun with stasis rocket/shotgun combo when I had lots if ducts in a small room.
Clip is counter intuitive, its more ammo efficiency.

This is mostly where I am. I've got a force gun w/ underbarrel electric bouncing bola thing to deal with large groups but it's really only necessary for not-Pack and large groups of the dudes with axes (who seem to have really weird hit boxes, unless I shoot them literally in the feet it seems to count as a torso shot and barely hitstuns them)
Played through Awakened. Short but great, I enjoyed it a lot. They used the co-op mission idea of showing the different players different information, but more consistently and to more unnerving effect. My sniper gun continued its dominance, whenever the end guy entered his weakened state, a single shot would instantly do all the allowed damage. Oh and dat ending...

You know, you're right--their hitboxes are seriously fucked. Especially once they've been cut in half. I really did not enjoy them as a new enemy type, now that I think about it.

Yeah, I typically shoot for the thighs, and it's not a problem on any other enemy, but those guys just fucking ammo sponge unless I'm shooting them in the ankles.
I can't speak to the game's overall quality yet, but I'm a few hours into Dead Space 3, and I find myself disagreeing with the assertions that *all* of the scariness is gone; that first ice planet "dungeon" (where you get the snow suit) certainly has its moments.
I haven't felt the free to play hooks yet either, but it still feels kind of dirty just knowing they're there.

There are no free to play hooks. You can buy some material packs but you will literally never ever need them and they are completely and utterly meaningless.
After being such a huge fan of the original and sequel, I basically gave up on DS3 for "EA" reasons (Origin only on PC, mostly).
That said, I'm willing to tolerate Origin to be able to play DS3 for $1, so here I am playing it after having done a quick runthrough of the first two.
One thing that is standing out to me is the character design - it seems way more exaggerated and cartoonish than in the previous entries. I don't know if that's because we're getting more closeups of characters, but we've gone from Kendra and Hammond being realistically modeled based on their actual actors in DS1, to whatever the hell is going on with Danik and his silly haircut. I could accept that there are simply too many characters to model now in the series, but even DS2 didn't have the weird bug-eyed people populating this one.
All I know is that this last entry is feeling super "gamey" and less focused on mood so far.

Ij will say it is funny how much the Dead Space series mimicked Hollywood movie trilogies.
At the bit right after you reassemble Rosetta, there's like six black slashers and then a bunch of humans and you finally kill all of them and then there's two dudes with rocket launchers and like four of the speedy guys
It is
Fucking
Bullshit
I'd probably be able to handle it if I hadn't had to burn like four medium medpacks previous to this fight because the targeting on the axe guys is totally fucked

If you put a carbine as one of your four weapon slots, you can one shot human enemies. For everything else, there's Mastercard Stasis.
I didn't think it had too much going on, just the side stuff was executed horribly.
Disagree, the side stuff (co-op only missions) were the best part. The main storyline's terrible, terrible romance was executed badly.
Sorry, I didn't meant the co-op stuff, I meant stuff like the romance. Or really anything centered around the Captain, because he was a shitty character.
I liked the main story, as in what Ellie's (and later Isaac's) mission ends up being.
I went into DS3 thinking the same thing, as I sued the Plasma Cutter as my main weapon in the first two games. The mass amount of enemies and the versatility of the weapons actually made me re-think this stance and experiment.
I will say it is funny how much the Dead Space series mimicked Hollywood movie trilogies.
1st one was decent but rough around the edges.
2nd was the best one.
3rd had way too much stuff going on at once.
IMO, Dead Space 1 was almost perfect, with the only blemishes being the dumb turret parts. Perfect atmosphere, pacing, and sense of momentum, in a setting that I loved and wanted to see more of. I love the aesthetic of sci-fi films where space is a blue-collar workplace, like Alien and Outland. The design of USG Ishimura evoked those films nicely, while adding some nifty stylistic touches from Event Horizon in ways that made them seem like a natural part of the ship's design, and also a convenient explanation for the necessity of RIGs.
Dead Space 2 is fantastic, and arguably the best in terms of gameplay, but it's not the no-contest comparison that you find between Mass Effect and the far-superior Mass Effect 2, for instance. The only game in Bioware's series I even care to revisit for another playthrough at some point is ME2, but I'll probably replay DS1 over DS2.

dead space 1 is like, a perfectly encapsulated old school survival horror game
dead space 2 is just fantastic in a ton of ways
dead space 3 is for lore fans and universe fans who are veterans of the gameplay. i must emphasize just how much i appreciated that the big reveals and answers were of a scale even greater than i had anticipated, and that the answer to 'where do the markers come from' punched the existential horror button really hard
so many games fuck up when it comes to actually answering the big questions about their universes; dead space did not, and that's why DS3 holds a special significance for me

it's pretty short but it wraps up a few loose ends and ends with a classic dead space stinger

It also has a set piece that is better than any set piece in DS3, and many set pieces in the entire series.

Freeze ray, with stasis rounds. Never worry about being rushed again.
