Personally, while I like the metal chassis and good speakers on the HTC, the whole removable battery and expandable storage on the GS4 are HUGE. The main life improvement for me getting a smartphone is going to be getting rid of my slow old mp3 player, and being able to watch TV shows and movies on my daily bus commute to work.
My mp3 player is 40 gigs, and about 30 of that is filled up with music and the other 10 is filled up constantly with whatever audiobooks or podcasts I'm currently listening to. I plan on getting a 32g S4 and also getting a 64g SD card, and I'm still worried I might end up tight on space in awhile. I mean, assume I port my 30g music collection, plus I'll have videos, apps, and games to store too. I'm kind of a digital packrat.
And with the battery, I've taken super long trips before where being able to swap in an extra pre-charged battery would come in handy. Plus, every phone I've had (plus the aforementioned mp3 player), I've had for 5+ years and been able to experience battery degradation firsthand, I don't want to have to worry about the battery in my first smartphone wearing out and being unreplaceable.
Have you tried Google Play Music?
It's a pretty solid alternative to having space problems on your phone.
I have 58.7 GB of music. My wife has ~10. We uploaded it to the Google Play Music system, and it's solved a lot of problems. I just quickly save a playlist or artist before I leave the house, and can switch it around when I'm on a business wiFi, or just eat the streaming data cost. I, personally, really love having access to my entire music library at all times. WiFi is incredibly easy to find if you want to download something else onto your phone.
I rooted my phone, so I could symlink the Google Play Music folder into my SD card. So I could download huge chunks if I wanted to.
They give you a "20,000 Song" limit for free, which is more than enough. My library is only ~10k songs.
It works pretty swimmingly. Plus, who doesn't want to give even more of their life over to the all knowing Google (I'm serious. I've been working at consolidating everything I can into Google Services. It's amazing.).
Can you and the wife access the same google play setup? Ie one mp3 cloud store to work for the both of you?

Not by default, but easily accomplished. You would just create a new Google account which you both logged into on your phone(s), then dump the music in there.
This is probably something I'll end up doing, we both just kind of put our music into our personal account to test it out.
Does it make me a bad person if I recommend a generic gel case? Given the strength of GG3, shock would be the greatest threat to the phone, and floppy gel cases are excellent at absorbing shock (also very very cheap).
Don't get me wrong though, between the S4 and the HTC One, you're getting a good phone either way.
I'm just really excited about getting my hands on the One because it is a gorgeous looking piece of hardware
I just fucking love exchangable batteries too much. Like, the S4 would've to be notably worse to warrant getting a phone without easily replacable battery
And while the One's camera is better in low light, it apparently isn't all too great in somewhat better light, compared to the S4's

Is there any agreed upon "best" way to transfer apps, txts, contact info, etc from one phone to another? I mean I could just re-download apps, but one, that would be a whole hell of a lot of downloading, and two, I'd lose all my save data for games. Or is that something they do in store? I seem to remember back in the day something called a Genie, that would do it. But I haven't seen that for a while.
Best way I now of to do everything is to have two rooted phones with Titanium on both of them. Slight Backup does a pretty good job of bringing across SMSes, user dictionaries, bookmarks and call logs. You should be able to use your Google account to bring contacts across.
Save data for games is one of my biggest annoyances when it comes to Android. There was a period last year where I was moving regularly between three Android phones and a crappy little ZTE slate, and I just gave up on playing games I cared about on them because I couldn't easily sync my save games.
I'm in the S4 vs. One conundrum now too. My upgrade is coming on the 2nd May and at the moment it's pretty even between both. Think the choice will be made based on the feel of the phone and what the screens look like when one of the shops round here has them in stock to look at.
I've, pre-ordered the S4, and looking at cases on line, the official ones are blood diamond priced. Seriously the S-View, is nothing more than a strip of ridged material that snaps into the battery cover and only covers the screen and nothing more. That will be 60 dollars please. Someone explain that! The one without the viewing window, or as I like to call it, "The scratch portal" is 40 bucks. I'm used to actual cases being over-priced, but this is pretty ridiculous. Has anybody seen a decent looking decently priced case that I can pick up?
Amazon will eventually sell the official cases around half off, but that might take a while. However, if the official flip cases for the S4 are as cumbersom as the one on the Note 2 is, I say skip it. That flippy cover gets real annoying when its time to take pictures.
And I wouldn't worry about scratching the screen of the S4, have you seen the videos of people attacking the screen with knives, keys, and all sorts of stuff with no ill effect? Gorilla Glass 3 is freaking nice.
Thoughts on the better third party case I linked?
It looks like it would offer more protection than the Samsung case, and if you really like that flip-style case that would probably be a good one to snag. Just remember that plastic film on the cover isn't gonna solve the problem of taking pics with the front folded back, I'm sure they'll look like hell shooting through it.
149.99 Im stuck with verizon as every other carrier poops the bed in my area. verizon has like 99.9% of the market here due to this.
Man, you just missed the S3 for $50!
wife has it. i want the bigger screen. I find my self wanting a tablet but for funsies only. A large phablet thingie would scratch that itch and provide me with a phone, as mine is falling apart.

Ah! Yeah. I looked at the larger screen, but for me... Being able to put the phone in my pocket is really important. The Note line doesn't really fit.

Note 2 fits fine in my pocket, but I usually wear lose fit jeans. They aren't skinny jeans by any stretch of the imagination!

Yeah, I wear slim/fitted pants. The S3 fits in my pocket with a leather wallet case just fine. The Note "fit" but the top corner poked out and it prevented a lot of hip movement.
Which was kind of annoying, because I too think the larger display is cool. I could have put it in my bag, but I rely too much on the vibration function for notifications.

see im a loose fit man. so im good. but i totally see your point.

Switched to an HTC One from my near 3-year-old HTC Evo...much lighter, same width, and just a bit taller. Speakerphone calls should suck a lot less now too!
Assuming the pictures aren't fake, i'll probably grab one of the Mophie battery cases, and then it'll basically end up about the same weight it was before, except with even more battery.

The S4 is now delayed until the 29th on T-Mobile. Rage, table-flip, etc. etc.
Yeah, they are an astoundingly slow carrier in many regards. Saw the One was available today for t mobile but none of the stores I called had it in stock, and said they likely wouldn't for another week.
Called t mobile itself though and ordered one that should be here tomorrow. Probably should have just ordered online yesterday and gotten the free car kit along with it but I imagine I will live without it
I'm impressed by the battery life I've been getting on the One. Yesterday, six-and-a-half hours into basically continual use playing games and browsing the interwebs, it was at 41%. Similar results today as well. The Desire S I was using temporarily would only last about three hours continual use, and the Galaxy Nexus about four if I was lucky. I hope the battery life continues to be this good.
anyone have any opinions, positive or negative, about Spigen products? Thinking about getting this case and this screen protector.
I'm paranoid about longevity so I want SOME kind of screen protection, but I imagine the flip-cases would get in the way of the camera, and this screen protector seems to get good reviews for other phones. And the case just looks awesome, I plan on getting the grey-ish teal-ish color.
There was a steam sig here. It's gone now.

FUNKY BUTT LOVER! I was expecting to pick up my phone this Saturday, but they just announced a delay. This happened with the last phone I tried to buy...

Aaand I paid next day shipping and only ordered over the phone because they assured me multiple times that they had it in stock and now I see it is back ordered.

They actually just straight up lied to me
But man, these mega corporations gotta get paid too! If they hadn't lied and cheated you, how will they claim billions in profits?
Is anybody offering anything besides the 16GB version at the moment?
I'm going to wait and see when Best Buy starts taking pre-orders for Verizon since I signed up for that thing where you get a $50 gift card for upgrading your phone through them this year.

Nope. The deal I am referring to gives you a $50 Best Buy gift card if you upgrade your phone through them on any of the four major US carriers at any time this year, no trade-in required. The window to sign up for it has long since closed, though.

Ugh my phone will charge but can't connect to any PC
And I know it's not the cable, the other samsung s2 works fine
I'm guessing the mini usb port is borked? I'm wondering if I should get it replaced by ATT or just replace the mini USB myself.

my carrier is selling the gs4 for €320 on bill pay
that is like over 100 more than I thought it was gonna be
I am taking a trip to the US (Florida specifically) for about 10 days. If I wanted to use my Nexus 4 what would be the best plan of attack? Do I just pick up a SIM card and a prepaid card from T-Mobile?
There I was, 3DS: 2621-2671-9899 (Ekera), Wii U: LostCrescendo
so I'm reading that Verizon discontinued the 32gb Galaxy S3 awhile back, and that there's a possibility they might not do a 32gb S4.
Is it true that most apps and games have to be installed on the device's memory and you can't run them from an SD card?
Yes, but with 16 gb, you really don't have to worry about filling it up with apps. I had a dozen games installed on mine and wasn't even half way full.
If you side-load music, you can just use an SD card. If you download music, you can easily set up a symlink if you root.
16 gigs is a stupid amount of space when the largest games are in the 100 meg realm.
If it's some how a massive issue (like, you store raw video data on your phone or something), you can symlink apps off your SD card. It's a little complex to get the apps to run, but possible.
So for all intents and purposes I shouldn't need more than 16GB? Even to future proof for a few years? I do plan on getting the Biggest SD card it will hold to hold music. Also, I'm looking at the S4 if that matters... man I'm so out of the loop in cellphones.

I don't think the S4 is exactly the same dimensions in every respect. I'm pretty sure it's not as thick. That could be a problem for case fit.
Well hey at least this means that when you get your phone back you know it will be a working phone

It's been $50 less on ATT than Sprint and Verizon for a while, IIRC. Which carrier dropped the price?
It's a fantastic phone, depending on the person's needs I'd still be inclined to recommend it over the S4.
