Okay I feel like an idiot.

When trying to set a custom wallpaper. Why do I always have to do this crop that forces me to use a very small and zoomed in picture of the image?

Like it is impossible to just use the dang full image. As in none of these

    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/vjsv9rh2bcbumgt/QP4ogtZdHp#/

Have any of you figured out how to get a usable crop of anything?

Ok, so with my HTC One would you guys recommend using the Web App or the Chrome App? They are both built in, but I've heard vague good things about mobile Chrome.

Edit: Also, under storeage I'm reading 76.64MB in music, and 417MB in Photos & Videos, yet I don't have any of either on the phone yet. When I check both sections are empty. Might that just be the space that the programs that govern both features take up?

Mobile Chrome is pretty great. The default browser is basically a very slightly tweaked version of the default 4.1 Android browser, which is a kind of lightweight mobile Chrome. Since they both use WebKit (though Chrome will soon be switching to the WebKit fork Blink), sites get rendered in pretty much the same way, so the differences are more in features. Both will sync with your desktop Chrome bookmarks, but mobile Chrome will also pick up passwords and desktop tabs.

Mobile Chrome also has a few nifty little features like page pre-rendering, font size boosting and, my favourite, if you've got a bunch of links close to each other, when you try to click on one, Chrome zooms in automatically on them all so you can hit the right one. Really good for when you're browsing through a multiple page thread on a forum. The only real feature of the default browser I like that Chrome doesn't have is the quick options pie menu you can activate, but that isn't exactly a killer feature for most.

If you use Chrome on your desktop already, it's worth giving Chrome on Android a go. If you're not too tied into Chrome, Firefox for Android (particularly the beta version in the Play Store) and Tint Browser (a slightly more privacy-orientated fork of the 4.1 browser) are solid options, too.

Maybe try the Firefox Beta in the Play Store, then. Or regular Firefox. I just have a predilection for alphas and betas and nightlies and such things.

You can set up Firefox Sync to sync bookmarks, history, tabs and saved passwords between desktop and mobile. If you use bookmark or search keywords, they get synced, too. Really handy.

Bah, I couldn't wait, so I ordered the 16GB S4 from Sprint, online using my discount. Now to find a case/protector and some screens! A day or two ago someone posted some screen protectors and nobody replied. Is there a 'standard' for these? Or just grab the most reviewed? Cheapest? Also, for the S4, I plan on carrying it mostly in my front pocket, so I don't really need/want a flip case, are those ones that just go around the edges a good choice and does anyone have any preferences?

    whoa

I did not know they made glass screen protectors. Big reason I don't use screen protectors is on account of the feel. But I've only gotten a few tiny scratches on any of my devices over the years. I'm fairly careful with them.

Might need to get one of those minimalist cases though. I bought the One because it looks so dang nice, don't want to get a big bulky case that covers it all up

So having worked the cell industry for 3.5 years combined with my own experience owning several different smartphones I simply must speak out on screen protectors. The only instance in which one is a good idea is if your phone is always in a pocket/purse with the screen exposed to your keys/metallic scratchy things (in which case reevaluate how you store your phone.) Smartphone screens now are resilient enough on their own that they're not going to get common use scratches and you're someone who's likely to drop or launch your phone into hard surfaces you're either going to come out perfectly fine (it hits at an angle, on the back, etc.) or absolutely shattered. There's no inbetween and a screen protector's not going to help that, you should probably pick up a cushiony case if that's going to be happening.

Screen sensitivity and smoothness without a screen protector is far too valuable and scratches far too unlikely to ever justify their use.

I've had my Galaxy S3 for 8 months now, never had a screen protector the entire time, and my screen doesn't have a single scratch or ding.

With new flagship phones like the S4 and One coming out with Gorilla Glass 3, I'd expect them to be even more resilient.

Had an Invisible Shield protector on my old Droid X2. Did not care for the feel of it at all. Much happier to go without a protector.

Yeah, Ive had my S3 since Verizon launch and I dont have any scratches, but I do have a crack in the screen which would have happened even if I did have a screen protector (although I have no idea how the crack happened, woke up one morning and there it was) but I assume even a simple bumper case would have prevented it.

Oh my god guys I just got the best phone in the world!

It's the Droid razor HD Maxx (Model XT926M).

    Here's the whole story.

I had an original Droid 1 with the pull-out keypad, and the only plan I has for it is the Unlimited Data, text and email plan through Verizon I got years ago. I never got a voice plan. (So I get charged about a dollar and some change per minute if I make a phone call.) However, my plan was only $54.99 a month, and I had unlimited data and texting so I was happy. Now Recently my screen died on the droid and I was in the market for a new phone. I love the unlimited data because I tether to my computer when I'm out in the boonies and just a touch inside cell range. I also use it when I'm in the office because connecting a personal device to my companies wiifi is a no-no.

Now recently I went to London, and discovered that I couldn't use my phone because I was CDMA and the rest of the world was GSM. So I decided that I wanted to go with a GSM phone this time. I went to AT&T first, as I have my landline through them. I was going to buy the phone full retail and just ask for a sim card so I didn't have to worry about that stupid "unlocking" thing. That's when I ran into a gigantic wake-up call on how the cell companies screw you. No only did they refuse to just give me a sim card, I discovered that not only is there no such thing as an unlimited data plan any more, the maximum they had as far as data went, (a 250M plan) they won't even give me because it required the purchase of a tablet.

I said thanks and went to Verizon.

There they said they had a "Worldphone" that did do both CDMA and GSM. It was the Droid razor HD Maxx. I told them that my data plan was very important to me, and if they were going to take the unlimited data away, I wasn't going to buy the phone from them and I'd just be happy using my old broken droid as a tether point for my laptop. It was the data I wanted, not the phone.

They said to call customer service to see what they could do...

That night I called them and discovered that If I bought an unactivated phone they would just do an IMEI swap on my current plan and I could keep the unlimited data plan.

However, researching further, I discovered that they intentionally locked out the US GSM bands from the factory on the phone so that even though I can do GSM, I could not take the phone to other carriers, such as AT&T and T-Mobile. That was just some bullshit! However I did find an out...

When I went to buy the Razor HD the next day, Verizon actually refused to sell me the phone, because they were required to activate it in the store and they would have to take me off the plan I had. I was forced to go to Best buy, and pick up the phone there. I then took it home and had it activated by customer support though an IMEI swap. I had full 4G speeds with my old plan. They told me as long as I kept buying the phone via a 3rd party at full retail, they can swap my IMEI as may times as I wanted!

YAY! Victory #1... Now for the GSM cock-up.

Once I was on their network I immediately rooted the phone. It was a one-click deal, super easy. After that I was able to pin down a firmware package that re-flashed my radio, unlocking the GSM band to allow the US frequencies I needed. Today, I went to my mom's place and took out her T-Mobile sim and put in my phone. I switched to GSM and *BAM* I had her plan + data.

I now have a universal phone for the U.S. Market. I'm so happy with this thing I can just cry! Now I can even buy prepaid sims and pop them into my phone and not touch my voice plan at all. I will suggest that if there is anyone who is thinking of getting an upgrade soon, this is the best way to go. Full universal connections with the ability to ditch to any network.

The phone cost me $750, but for what I got out of it, I was able to take it on the chin for that.

Nothing but love love love on this side.

That thing has a beast of a battery too.

Also yeah I wish getting carriers to unlock phones wasn't such an awful chore. I have a palm pre that is useless (I restored it to factory settings, and you can't do any phone setup without a phone plan.. so.. my plans to use it as just basically an mp3 player are for naught. Though I guess if somebody here has a solution that would be nice) and a Galaxy S2 that can't be taken to other carriers. Though I might be trading that S2 in to HTC for the hundred bucks.. or keeping it as a wifi/gaming/mp3 device. Still mulling it over.

I could have gone with a factory unlocked Dev edition of the HTC One but I was tired of waiting so locked Tmobile variant it is. Though I figure I'm gonna be with tmobile for a while anyway so hey

    there is that

Anyone know of an app/program to get the small screen onto your PC monitor. Doesn't even have to control the device (Kindle Fire to be specific) just get the screen to show up. Plenty of stuff to control the PC from the Fire, but the other way around is the goal.

So my new HTC One keeps dimming and then auto-sleeping from inactivity while playing games. Basically any time I'm watching a cutscene, or at some point where you don't press anything, the phone decides that it's not being used so it's going to go to sleep. What's the setting to stop this from happening during games without completely turning off the setting?

Edit: Ok tested it on YouTube. I'm almost completely through a music video and the screen has not turned off. So just with apps it's doing this. I've had multiple games where I'm watching the intro or a cutscene and it starts to dim, and then pops off.

The first time I saw that sleep behavior in apps happen with the One, I thought it was the phone rebooting itself. A few rhythm games seem to have unusual amounts of audio lag, but overall it's been great. Been ending days after 11-12hrs off charger at 70% (light use), which blows my old Evo out of the water.

well the first thing it says when you click on the restore is that restoring from the cloud requires the premium version, backing up from an SD card does not.

though i wasn't able to copy the files from my dropbox backup to the phone since i couldn't figure out where to put what.

Under preferences is a setting for where the app looks for the backups it's going to restore from. You can either put the backups you made before into that folder, or you can put them wherever you want and then set the backup location in TB to that directory.

Both options will get you a list of all the apps you have backups for and allow you to restore.
