No matter how many times I disable verizon apps on my phone I still perpetually get prompts to use them when I try to do something. No matter how many times I tell the phone to always use the google map app it still asks me if I want to use verizon maps.
Plus, they seem to be able to reactivate themselves when i force stop or otherwise attempt to deactivate them. Plus there's shit like Madden and a couple other games/apps that you straight up can't remove.
I'll grant that the apps that verizon puts on there aren't nearly the performance hog that, say, HTC's android version is compared to stock.
It's just an unnecessary annoyance. Like bloatware on a pre-made PC. Yes, you can typically work around them or get it off, but it's a headache, crap that no one actually uses, and just completely unneeded.
Those sound like strange problems. I have 4 Samsung phones in my house. Two S3s, one S4, and a S5.
After disabling all the crap I can, and turning off notifications and such, none of them have reactivated apps, notify, or appear on the app selector thing.
I don't think it's user error, since I think you're probably a savvy person who knows how to read and pick prompts.
Maybe I'm just lucky? Anecdotes are anecdotes though.
It very well could be. I have a razr maxx hd, and while it was ostensibly supposed to be more of a 'stock' version of Android, every major update it has gotten, performance has dropped and new issues keep popping up. It could be something about updating to the newest version of google apps like maps, messenger, and so on, that causes the phone to have to re-assess what app to use for what function; since those apps update fairly frequently...but that's clearly not the way it should work.
I've debated just wiping it and starting over with a clean install of the newest android version it can get (4.4.2) and going from there, but I've just been too lazy to look up how, and if, I can back up game saves and such I don't really feel like losing. I haven't tried to unlock the phone itself, though I might for shits after I get a new phone; I tried to unlock an old droid I had years ago and fucked it up so I've been kina weary about doing it, despite it being supposedly allowed now.
I'd just rather have a phone that doesn't have that added stuff from the get go.
Huh, pity that Moto X is online only. I would have gone over to the phone kiosk today and gotten one.
It's actually not online only, call your local Costco - mine (Rochester, MN) has them in stock at the kiosk.
Hm. I work there and when I asked our kiosk guy, he said they would not be getting Moto Xs. Things might have changed though, I'll ask him again.
Just picked up my Moto X a few hours ago, felt a lot better in hand than the Samsung S5. However, Costco also has a 90 day exchange policy so if I end up hating it I'll probably jump back to Samsung S5 and root it on Verizon, which appears to be a huge pain in the ass.
I agree with that last sentiment. The problem I have is shelling out for it, when phone tech advances so fast.
Getting an unlocked phone is such an unreasonable cost to me.
That's the problem for many, yeah. If we go off contract, even outright buying top of the line phones, we would be saving hundreds of dollars over the next two years...but that initial upfront cost for an unlocked phone isn't anything to sneeze at and why many go with contracts.
Unlocked phones are easier to resell too, so if we upgrade again in a couple years, we should be able to recoup some of the costs, assuming our kids don't destroy the phones in the intervening time. :P
I upgraded to 5.0 on my first generation Nexus 7 a few days ago and I'm thinking that might have been a huge mistake. It was performing fine before the upgrade but now it's noticeably slower and sadder.
Is there a best way to roll it back or undo my foolishness?

I haven't had that issue with my Note 4. Mobile Hotspot and Voice Mail are the only Verizon apps that I can't disable, and those can be hidden. Thus far, those that I have disabled have stayed that way.
Rollers are red, chargers are blue....omae wa mou shindeiru
I have a N5, did a clean install of lollipop and it runs like a champ. Some apps like Skype seem to take two attempts to open some times, but I think that's more an issue with the apps. (As my Google apps and some frequently updated games run snappy.)
I dunno, if you can get one at a reasonable price, I think the N5 is still pretty fantastic.
Get about 8 hours of reading and browsing stuff at work on a single charge. Which is good enough for me as I'm never that far from some kind of charger.
We're gonna go check out some phones monday probably, I'll check if any of the local corporate AT&T or T-Mobile stores have any Nexus 5's she can take a look at. It really seems like for their price, assuming I can catch them in stock anyway, they're excellent value.
A question about my current phone/plan though; my phone hasn't been on 4G for almost a week now. i'm not sure if my wifes phone has or hasn't, but is there any settings internally I should check before I harass Verizon about the sudden lack of 4G? I've tried fiddling with the preferred network type (my choices are Global, LTE or something else I don't recall but doesn't really apply to verizon I don't think), and it doesn't seem to help; restarts, turning data on/off airplane mode on/off etc do nothing.
Day two with my Moto X 2014 and I'm really digging it. It's got a lot of minimalist UI stuff that I like compared to how bloated the S3 felt. It's also nice and snappy, big screen. At first I thought I was going to be unhappy with the lack of a microSD card, but I think it'll just make me rotate my music in and out.
Man, all this phone stuff is giving me a headache.
More questions. :rotate:
I'm still set on the Nexus 6 if I can get it in stock from google.
The wife, however is not so sure. We went to the t-mobile store again tonight so she could look at phones and surprisingly she really liked the Galaxy Note 4. I say surprisingly because it's huge and she is not; but she really likes the stylus and all its writing > text/contacts/search jazz...which to be honest I did too.
Then I got home and looked up the models of the Note 4 and holy shit. The only unlocked version is the international one that doesn't work on US LTE bands; there's no 'unlocked' US version so we'd have to choose either CDMA or GSM.
It also appears that even T-Mobile and AT&T have their own unique models. So, my question is, is there any model of the Note 4 that you can buy that will work on more than just the network you bought it on? We want as much freedom as possible if we decide to go back on a contract. Price wise, it seems TMobile is hands down the best price of major US carriers, but Verizon still has a much larger network. We won't go with a Note 4 if they are locked to their specific carrier; but if either the GSM or CDMA models can be used on their respective carrier options, then it is a bit less of an issue.
Is there somewhere I can (relatively) easily find a given phones model versions and what carriers each model can work on?
It'd be nice if the Nexus 6 had a stylus since it's the same size as the Note 4 and I could just get two and bypass all this nonsense; but alas.
EDIT:...so...am I reading this right, that TMobile won't sell you a phone outright unless you have an account in good standing? wat?
I have the old Nexus 7, which I don't think I'll be upgrading to 5.0. Seems like it just makes things slower, and the upgrades aren't really stuff I use.
I have the MotoX first gen - I'll probably upgrade even if most of the additions are things the motoX already has!
its weird, i had the lollipop pushed to my nexus 7 and i didn't install it since i didn't want to lose access to some games. went to install it last night and it says my tablet is up to date and it can't find the system update

2012 or 2013 Nexus 7? My OG N7 hasn't had the update drop but a lot of people reported problems and slowdowns with it, I am wondering if they stopped pushing Lollipop to the '12 model (hopefully just temporarily to make improvements).

Show me a service provider that does? Aside from prepaid providers, that is.
I dunno? I can't say I ever tried, it just seemed weird to me that they wouldn't. Are the profit margins so slim on them that they don't make money either way?

Phones are usually offered at a(n often sharp) loss to get people signed up for service.
...and when you are done with that; take a folding
chair to Creation and then suplex the Void.
Ah well, fair enough. Since T-Mobile doesn't have contracts we can just get her a plan, buy the phone outright and when we're ready just cancel it; but since they have a $45 plan that is sufficient for her needs, there's no rush.
I'm just going to keep watching the Play store religiously to catch a Nexus 6.
Hmmmm...so if I get a Nexus 6 from T-Mobile, and in a few months I get them to unlock it for me; is the only network I ultimately can't use it on Verizon? Maybe Sprint?
I'm just debating trying to discern the drawbacks here, if I can't catch tomorrows re-stock of Nexus 6's. I highly doubt we'll end up on Verizon again, so maybe that's not a huge deal; and my wifes phone pretty much no matter what won't be Verizon compatible...so I'm just going back and forth in my head if it matters to me at all.
Recently ditched my Nexus 5 for a Note 4. Apparently 5.0 made my Nexus commit suicide. Rebooted and got stuck in a boot loop. Tried restoring to factory; no dice. Unlocked the boot loader and flashed CWM recovery. Nothing. Rooted it and then flashed Cataclysm. More boot loops. Couldn't deal with not having a phone (I work in cellular sales and have a business on the side; calls missed equals money lost) and picked up a Note 4 and it is fanfuckingtastic.
So I think I've discovered an issue with my Nexus 5 update. It seems that no program is able to "wake up" my phone. For example, if someone calls me instead of the phone simply showing who's calling and allowing me to answer/hang up, I have to unlock the phone manually with the on/off button, whereupon I'm given the lock screen with all my notifications on it one of which is the phone call, which I then double click on to finally bring up the call screen so I can actually answer *deep breath*. Seems to be the same problem with anything that works similarly, e.g. alarms. Due to this the alarm doesn't allow me to snooze by just hitting the volume button on the side, which is upping my grump factor in the morning considerably. Anyone have any ideas besides factory reset?

Have you checked the new Priority options? When you press the Volume Down button, make sure the screen has ALL selected on the right.

No dice unfortunately. Works fine in safe mode, so it must be app related. Lord knows which one it is though. I'm thinking factory reset is probably my only way forward.
Anyone have any tips on apps for backing up such? I have superbackup at the moment, but if there's something more automated that'd be handy.
Helium works pretty well for backups, though its fiddly to set up

If you have root, Titanium Backup is the way to go.
Campy, that was the beginning of the problems I started to have after the update. Not trying to rain on your parade, but a factory reset may just be the first step.
