Anyone know any good places near the BCEC for general grocery shopping?

MJ O'Connor's at the Park Plaza Hotel & by the Convention Center is actually really good and well priced.

For post-9PM, it can admittedly get hard. However, it was close to midnight one night last PAX East and me and a friend drove around and, somewhat randomly, happened upon Parish Cafe (http://parishcafe.com/). They are open until 1 AM (last call @ 2 AM) and have a lot of sandwiches and salads. They are actually really good, and I can guarantee you haven't had some of these sandwiches before.

The only downside (which I suppose is common in a city like Boston) is parking availability (we were at the South End location). Also, the table next to us was very loud. We were there very late, though. It was clear to us that it's a popular college student hangout.

Depends on what kind of groceries? The closest ones are the ones in Chinatown. I think there might be one even closer, but it's much more expensive.

I actually go to the Shaw's by the Hynes. It is right on top of a T station and it was about 30 minutes each way from Silver Line station in front of the Seaport. As a full grocery store it is pretty nice, and if your room has a fridge it is amazing to have sandwich fixins on hand.

Do you go to the one in Back Bay or the one in Harvard Square? Both are nice, though the Back Bay location is bigger.

Oh, important thing for any of you ordering delivery from your hotel rooms: Due to a Boston law, delivery people are NOT allowed to go to the rooms. YOU need to go to the lobby and get your food from the delivery person.

There is a Whole Foods in the Beacon Hill area, a 24 hour Shaw's in Back Bay, and a Stop & Shop and a Target at South Bay Plaza.
The Shaw's and the Whole Foods are the easiest to get to via the T. South Bay Plaza only has bus service.

Lucky's is pretty pricey but I don't find it too bad (it's right below where we have our Boston Indies meetings). It's only open on Friday around lunchtime and early afternoon, but Metro Cafe on Congress St. is awesome and there's something for everyone. It's only a 5-minute walk from the BCEC. I couldn't get enough of that place when I worked in South Boston at Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts.

The whole waterfront area has some very good places cropping up so the selection is getting better each year; also most of the new places there are huge and corporate, so at least the quality will be consistant; however none of the new places are holes in the wall and none of them will be cheap. I'd set them all at about midrange Boston prices (which equals expensive for people who arnt used to paying urban prices to eat out).

If you want inexpensive and good I'd venture to china town, or take a look at the places in Southy (South Boston, on Open Table see below) Virtually everywhere in Boston is really walkable if you are the least bit adventurous. I'll be walking to PAX, for example, from a subway stop in South Boston. Maybe a full mile, more like 3 quarters.

Finally if you want a good place on-line to see what's available check out opentable.com and search by neighborhood, PAX is in the "seaport" neighborhood. Everything in that neighborhood will be very walkable.

I actually don't eat enough burgers to give an opinion on the absolute best (there are a hundred places that serve the "best burger in Boston"). However try Boston Magazine or Bostonburgerblog, those will give you a starting place if the best burger in Boston is a serious mission for you (as opposed to "the best found near PAX the one weekend people visited")

The past two years I was at East for only a single day pass but both times we hit Atlantic Beer Garden after leaving the show. The prices aren't bad and it is normal bar food.
    http://www.atlanticbeergarden.com/

It is a really quick walk to get to, if you head out the front door of the conference center and across the bridge, then head down the stairs it is two blocks towards the water. The first year the food was awesome (I had a Macaroni and Cheese stuffed 1/2 pound burger) with good service for our table of 6. Last year it went the other way, the service was downright terrible for our 4 person table to the point where I almost wanted to not give a tip at all (and I very rarely even go below 20%) and we had friends show up order beers and just leave after a while because the waitress never brought them. She brought them about 10 minutes after they left and just put them on the table without so much as an apology and then thought nothing of putting them on the bill. The food was decent but not as good as we remembered from the first year we went, so we started to question if we may have just been starving at that point from being in the show and barely eating all day.

Overall it is worth the walk down if you are looking for a good pint or two, since they have a really good local and microbrew tap and bottle selection but the food and service appears to be hit or miss. On a side note, there is a 24 hour parking lot there that we have used both times into Boston and it was $12 and really easy to get in and out of if you don't want to park directly at the convention center, it worked perfectly for us since we were eating there then getting in the car and heading out since we didn't have to pay for parking in two different places.

For xao long bao (bite sized soup filled dumplings; called mini juicy dumplings at Gourmet Dumpling), in Boston's chinatown (about 1/2 mile away). There are probably less than 10 restaurants in all of the USA that serve xao long boa.

Chowhound is a good resource for Boston-area restaurant talk; that's usually my go-to when trying new places around here.

Probably the best restaurant around is Craigie on Main over in Cambridge. God that's good stuff, but probably more appropriate for a slow-evening instead of when you want to get back to PAX.

Neptune Oyster in the North End was mentioned above, and is an amazing restaurant, but very small, maybe a 25 person capacity tops.

Two top notch restaurants there. And a couple notes :

Craigie books out about two to three weeks as far as reservations go. They have limited bar seating (maybe 8-10 seats) on a first come first serve basis but be prepared to get there early (they open at 5:30pm) if you want those. That being said, the burger there (though incredibly expensive) is one of the best things I've ever eaten. And if you are seated after 7pm, they may run out of the burger as well (also, burger is only available on the bar side of the restaurant. Not in the dining room side)

Neptune is awesome but they don't take reservations.

I am going to check out Via Matta on park plaza. It's about a 30 min walk from the convention center but it will be worth it go eat at a place with my last name in the tittle. They may give me some free food.

There aren't a whole lot of people who actually live around there so there isn't really a grocery store per se.

There are some grocery stores in Chinatown if that'll work for you. Otherwise you're looking at a trip to Southie or something ...

I like Craigie, but I don't know that it's the best place in town. O Ya, No 9 Park, L'Espalier, ICOB, Coppa, Clio, and a handful of others are all somewhere in my "best of boston" mental list. O Ya is currently #1 for me.

It's a little bit of a 'T' adventure to get there from the BCEC, however, well worth it.

Davis Sq. has a good amount of all sorts of tasty vittles.
Recently had Sunday Brunch with the wife at Foundry on Elm and I cant remember the last time I was so satisfied on a Sunday afternoon.
We had this massive puff pastries that came with chocolate dipping sauce...omg.
I also have to reinforce someone's recommendation of Boston Burger Company. Artery Clogger and Killer Bee burgers FTW. Pretty decent wedge fries and substantial salads too.

It should also be noted Boston has a small and irregular army of quality food trucks. The largest congregation being the Dewey Sq/South Station area.
You'll regularly see a number of trucks from 7am til 3pm..sometimes as late as 8pm.
Some favorites of mine that tend to be at that location:
    Bon Me
    Clover
    kickasscupcakes
    momogoose.com

Hopefully as spring arrives and things get warmer out some other trucks will come out of hiding like Redbones BBQ, which also has a restaurant in Davis Sq.

It's the spam queue. Newer posters get caught in it sometimes. The best thing to do if your post appears to be eaten is just to wait. What ends up happening is that an admin or a mod or someone will go through, see you are not a spammer, and mark you as such... then all your posts that you posted come flowing out.

No Name Seafood is really good and cheaper than Legal Seafood. IIRC, it's pretty close to where Legal Seafood is too.

I prefer LTK (Legal Seafood Test Kitchen) which is directly across the street from Legal Seafood Harborside.

It's generally cheaper, and they have interesting things on their menu rather often- they just have new untested things all the time (plus some simple things, like wood-grilled trout for under 14).

But they're really awesome for groups because they can handle EVERY single person's check independently, and everyone doesn't have to leave at once.

Barking Crab is Expensive but they are very good- I've never had a reason to complain about anything I ever got there. But expensive- and very long waits during PAX season generally, though they're reacting and managing it better based on last year's service.

First year at BCEC it was a- I'm not kidding- 6 hour wait at one point.

here's a few of my favorite spots in the area for various types of eats..

some of these maybe a bit of a hike or T ordeal but worth it in my book.. breakfast

    Mul's Diner

    W. Broadway / A , Southie (right next to Broadway T stop)

    http://goo.gl/maps/uwJEM

awesome breakfast.. great no-frills service... good coffee... a great little diner..

    Liberty Bell Roast Beef

170 W. Broadway, Southie (a few blocks down from Mul's)

    http://goo.gl/maps/UWrLv

all manner of fried foods and subs.. they have a version of the North Shore of Massachusetts' famed hot roast beef sandwich.. here is a Yelp review i found to help illustrate...

    Magical roast beef goodness
    super sloppy amazing sandwich oozing
with special sauce and pickles must be ordered to go.
    you cannot be consumed delicately.

yummy hot onion rings emitting greasy steam
fog my glasses with tangible deliciousness
stained take-out bag, come with me
    somewhere quiet.

    Hot Pot Buffet

    70 Beach St. Chinatown

    http://goo.gl/maps/WEVVg

the name is pretty self explanatory but.. this is a good but expensive spot to bring a crew of people for late night eats.. (they are open for lunch too and you could def. hit this up solo and it would be a lot cheaper I imagine)
they give you a list of items available from meats to fish to veggies and you and your dining companions pick what you want them to bring and what kind of broth you would prefer (i would recommend 1/2 house and 1/2 mala (spicy)) and then they bring you out platters of deliciousness

there's a couple for now.. i'll add a few more when time permits...
